I loved my Guide. I got to do exactly what I wanted to do and see the things I wanted to see very efficiently. She was very sensitive to my personal interest. And was incredibly knowledgeable of the history of the city.

      Awesome, fun tour with Hugo
I saw this Pinpoint excursion on Trip Advisor and contacted them to see if I could get other guests from our cruise to contact them and we could share a 12-hour private excursion. They were very helpful helping me put this together so it could be more affordable than the ship tours and a smaller group. I love their follow up. The guide they sent us was awesome. He was super informative, humorous, and answered all our questions. He explained different sites, customs, religions, food, etc. We learned so much while having fun. There was only one drawback that couldn't be helped. We had traffic going into Kyoto and coming back to Osaka, but Hugo helped us pass the time by telling us about his reason to come to Japan and his journey to become a citizen. Plus, the van was very roomy for 8 of us. I highly recommend this tour.

      Best way to see Kyoto
Masaya was our guide for an 8 hour tour of Kyoto. He met us at our hotel. Masaya was very knowledgeable and enjoyable. We were able to see quite a lot of Kyoto in our 8 hours, much more than we would have been able to on our own. I cannot recommend the experience more. He also gave us recommendations for our remaining days in Kyoto which was very helpful.

      Easy and fun
My daughter and I had a great time with Taibi and really appreciated his expertise and easy- going nature. He tailored the day to us and we had a great time with his plan. I would recommend him to anyone.

      A Disappointment
This trip fell far short of its promise. Our guide worked with us via email to plan our trip. We were very impressed by him. However, reality intervened. The day before our trip, he totally changed our itinerary. Instead of taking the bullet train one way and the local train for our return, he announced he’d pick us up in his private car. Therefore, we spent over five hours getting back and forth to Kyoto. Five tedious hours on highways equals vacation time poorly spent. Our guide was ill prepared to discuss the sites he showed us. While the two sites were worth seeing, our guide had few stories to share. He instead would quietly read random facts from his phone. Sorry. This is not guiding. Finally, he committed the cardinal sin of a cruise port guide: he returned us to port thirty minutes later than committed. Japan does not require guides to be licensed. This is dangerous for visitors accustomed to traveling in Europe with top guides. Our Japanese tour guide was inexperienced and the tour company itself holds responsibility for allowing him to be our guide. Nice guy, for sure, but ill suited for this work.

Our tour guide was extremely friendly and nice. English was good, but was hoping for a bit more of the Geisha knowledge and history.

Best use of your time, worth every penny!!
My husband and I had an amazing experience with our guide, Oulan. We spent 5 or so hours together and the time flew by. Oulan knew how to make the most of our time together, and no time was wasted! We were able to see so much of Kyoto. We were overwhelmed by options and Google lists of "things to do in Kyoto" that we didn't even know where to begin. We are so thankful we took this tour on our first day in Kyoto because Oulan gave us ideas for things to do for the remainder of our trip, and we even went back and visited some of the places we went with Oulan. We never felt rushed; and yet we saw so much. We were very impressed with Oulan's knowledge of Kyoto and its history and culture. He answered literally every single question we had. Upon booking the tour, we were contacted by Oulan asking our interests and what we would like to see. So if you have a good idea of what you want to see, no idea of what you want to see, or somewhere in-between, this is the perfect tour for you. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone, book now - you won't regret it!

      Some food and Kyoto sightseeing
The tour was very expensive for the amount of food eaten/knowledge shared. Our guide was kind and friendly but we would have enjoyed more recommendations on what to eat and what to try.

This tour was a highlight of our trip to Japan!
We did an Arashiyama tour in Kyoto with Alex as a family of 10 people. We had a large group but Alex did a wonderful job making sure everyone stuck together and was very accommodating towards us. He met us at our hotel lobby in the morning and we went to Arashiysma together. On the way he taught us a lot about Japanese culture and his experiences living in Kyoto. We had so many questions for him and he answered them all. Once we got to Arashiyama, Alex began the tour and showed us the area. He also helped us take some amazing family photos! After the tour, Alex guided us back to our hotel and went above and beyond by giving us recommendations for food and kimono shops in Kyoto. He also said he was happy to answer any more questions we may have and to feel free to contact him about it. The tour with Alex was definitely a highlight of our trip and we will take our memories home and share it with our friends and family. Thank you for the wonderful experience!

      No geisha, no see
Not really a geisha tour at all. In geisha district you spend only about 30-40 minutes. Another hour is temple tour at night. The third hour is more like a shopping experience. Though our guide was very good and she gave us some info about geiko and mayko. We would like to thank her for that.

A job well done in challenging circumstances
Kenya did a great job of hosting our evening tour of Gion given some of the challenges presented by our group. Monday evening proved to be as quiet as many of the guide books say, however, the first part of the evening was a helpful orientation on our first night in Kyoto. Unfortunately, the mobility of one of our group was less than we had anticipated when booking and this proved an inhibiting factor, as was the groups indecision about what to eat! Kenya coped well and the Wagyu BBQ/ grill he recommended proved to be a hit. Following dinner he was exceptionally accommodating in providing an extended walking tour to the upper part of Gion for the more mobile members of the group. Well done.

Brenda was a fantastic guide. Extremely knowledgeable and very entertaining. From walking Gion district to eating and drinking on old Pontocho it was as if I had a friend teaching me things rather than just a rigid guide. Thank you so much Brenda for the wonderful time!

We chose a local guide Haruka. It was at first a bit hard to get in contact with. When we did he was flexible ,patient ,and helpful and since we used taxis we were able to get to many sites. When you have a short time in Kyoto and want to visit many sites you should use a local guide with a variety of transportations
the best option to see this beautiful city.

Even though it was a little surprising initially to be taken around kyoto by a non Japanese it really worked out in the end because Chai was able to give very interesting perspectives from a foreigner living in Japan amd share the best bits of kyoto including history. It was an interesting experience getting around kyoto on public transport though i wonder if based on our travels it would have made more sense to get a full day's pass for public transport rather than pay individual trips with the IC card. Nevertheless Chai planned the route well maximising on what weather allowed and resulted in us having minimal wait times at the attractions. She was flexible and contacted ahead of time to confirm meeting point and time and the proposed itinerary. She also made sure we got back safe to where we needed to be at the end of the trip. It was really fun packing in quite a bit during our 8h trip including trying to glimpse geishas getting around their business even if we weren't successful in the end. All in all thanks to Chai we had a great time in kyoto.

We had Taibi as our guide during our trip to Kyoto last January and we had an amazing experience! We booked our trip less than 12 hours before the appointment time and Taibi was able to accommodate us nonetheless and was able to plan a full day itinerary very well. He knew all the local gems that we wouldn't have otherwise found if we were by ourselves. Also although the trip was a bit slower paced due to old parents, Taibi never once rushed us and he accommodated our pace even if he had to extend beyond the 8 hour tour we booked. We're lucky to have had him as our guide and would recommend him to all groups looking for a local Kyoto experience!

I recommend anyone to read the negative reviews for City Unscripted here and on other websites before booking. We booked a six hour tour and filled out the questionnaire specifying that we are interested in the history and culture of four sights in Kyoto. Our guide (Taibi) was very kind and certainly knew where to take the best "Instagrammable" pictures, but he could not tell us anything about the history of where we went to and even suggested us to use an audio guide. The things he did tell us, were wrong (we googled it later because it confused us a lot). And in general, it seemed like he didn't read the questionnaire and was disappointed that we didn't ask him to show us his standard prepared tour (try food at the market). For us, this tour was very disappointing and a great waste of money (almost the same cost as a licensed guide). I wish I had read the negative reviews before. I am giving two stars though, because I contacted the provider we booked at and City Unscripted and got a partial refund.

Your feedback is truly appreciated, and we're diligently enhancing our procedures and host qualifications to prevent such occurrences in the future. We're glad we could resolve this matter to your contentment and hope for the chance to earn your trust again in the near future. Warm regards, Ruslan and the City Unscripted Team.

Ada was an incredible host for myself and husband. She created an intriguing and informative itinerary for us that she adjusted throughout the day as we expressed interest in different topics. The result was the perfect day where we learned a lot about the culture and history of Japan. I would highly recommend Ada to anyone looking for an informative guide who is flexible to your needs, interests, and questions!

MIKI we will miss you! We had the best afternoon running around with MIKI — she arranged hard to get reservations at some Instagram worthy food stops and booked us the most unreal Wagyu restaurant for dinner. They don’t have a Michelin star, but they should. We also did a Sake Brewery tour and tasting. Such a great day. We did not know that our tour price included some sampling costs so she covered our pancake and transport fares because we had already sort of paid for it upfront. WE used public transport and walking, things are far apart in Kyoto so if you don’t walk quickly I’d recommended having your guide arrange more door to door transport. It’s an absolute yes to all three stops we had that day — thank you MIKI!

I made some last-minute changes to include my friends 14yo son on the tour with me. Our Guide Alvin was flexible in making him feel included, whilst still maintaining my original "must see" places. Alvin was so generous with his time, chatting easily and sharing knowledge of his local area, he really made us feel welcome. Alvin is a kind, intelligent and genuine guy and made our visit so meaningful, as we gained a deeper understanding of Japanese culture, local traditions and advice. We walked at an easy pace, stopping for photos and coffee as we liked. With the knowledge he provided, we could then go and explore further or take others from our group back to the places he showed us. We both highly recommend this tour as a great value, informative and accessible trip as two customers with vastly different interests (14yo M, 33yo F). Alvins tour was one of the highlights of our trip.
    Thankyou

Took a solo morning walking tour of Kyoto with Kenta on 6th September 2023.
Kenta met me at my hotel and took me on a really interesting three hour tour of the charming and scenic city of Kyoto, taking in the Pontocho and Gion districts, the very relaxing and peaceful Kenninji Zen temple, the Yasui Konpiragu shrine, the majestic Yasaka Pagoda and Kiyomizudera.
Kenta provided a very interesting and knowledgeable commentary of all the sites, explaining the culture, history and landscape of Kyoto in a very engaging manner. He was also very good company and we chatted about Japan and life there generally, which I found really informative as this was my first visit to the country. Kenta speaks perfect English and readily engaged in conversation and answered all my questions. The light rain provided a welcome relief to the heat of the previous days and added a chilled atmosphere to the morning. Overall, I really enjoyed my tour with Kenta and would highly recommend him to anyone who wants a great introduction to Kyoto!

We had a great morning with our guide, Tala, visiting sights including Fushimi Inari and the falling cherry blossom on the river. City Unscripted had sent us a questionnaire in advance and had matched us with a young woman who was easy for my girls to talk to. Tala knew plenty about the sights but didn’t bombard us with information. She was especially helpful navigating unfamiliar food and was relaxed about the finishing time. This was our second experience booked through GetYourGuide, and I would happily recommend that website, City Unscripted tours and Tala herself.

Hanna has been a great host to our family and we have visited shrines, learn more about the Japanese culture. During the Nishi market tour, she has also recommended great food which both my teenagers enjoy alot.

She has also go beyond and help us with some reservations, eliminating the language barrier.

Highly recommend her to be the Kyoto guide to others who are keen and open to off-track items, following the flow of the group rather than sticking to a rigid itinerary.
