Overview
Gion is Kyoto’s most traditional district where the culture of kagai, the world of maiko and geiko is still alive. Though many tourists come to Gion, it can be difficult to grasp the magnitude and beauty of Gion completely. Your guide will explain the history of kagai, the lives of maiko and geiko and even take you to the backstreets of Gion. Walk with a knowledgeable, licensed English-speaking guide and discover the depths of the Old Capital, Kyoto.
Highlights
  • Learn about the history and traditions of geishas in Kyoto
  • Visit places where 'Memoirs of a Geisha' was filmed
  • Let your guide handle navigation through the Gion district
  • Upgrade for a longer experience with a private guide
What to Expect
Your walking tour of Japan’s old capital begins by meeting at the Gion Omoide Museum. Explore Gion, which is famous for being the geisha district of Kyoto. During the tour, your guide points out locations that were featured in the book and movie 'Memoirs of a Geisha.' As you walk down cobbled streets and past a beautiful stream, hear stories of Kyoto’s ancient past. Your guide educates you on the history of geisha—from their kimonos and hairstyles to rules and daily rituals. If you’re lucky, you may even spot a geisha on the street. For a more in-depth experience, upgrade to a longer, private tour where you visit three Geisha areas in total—Gion, Pontocho, and Miyagawacho.

Great to learn the history of the Gion district & how in these current times, the geisha is still very much part of modern Japanese culture in this area. Lovely, engaging tour guide, kept us all interested & on board. Well worth taking the tour.
