- donaldf6730 contributionsInteresting half day tour - fireflies the best bitTour is based on river about 1.5 hours by Van from KK - so quite long transfers. Monkey tour is short, a free hundred metres up river. They have some tame macaque monkeys which come on the boat and we saw a proboscis monkey in the distance. Mirror beach needs a clear sunset but it was very cloudy for us. The fireflies were the best bit for me.Written 8 December 2024
- A2607PPmigueld0 contributionsDon’t book it if you have any respect for nature and wildlifeWhen you go to visit animals, nature, wildlife…you are supposed to be respectfull, not bother the animals, be quiet and try to observe them in their real habitat. The people on this tour does completelly the opposite. They call the monkeys to jump into the boat to feed them and use them as they were so kind of toy, they light and screem to the fireflies to scare them and make them fly….0 respect for animals and the environment, so please do not book this tour.Written 3 December 2024
- Dumitru D0 contributionsDisappointment and money loss!Biggest disappointment of our vacation! It's just a lie because you have to drive for 3 hours one way for 1 hour trip on ATV... The commute was very dangerous because of the recklessness of the driver! I'm not recomanding, definitely!Written 13 November 2024
- 811atiyak0 contributionsAmazing Views, Great Tour Guides! This was a really amazing experience. I would like to especially give thanks to James not only a great tour guide, a really good photographer. When I injured myself he became Dr James who was very attentive and quick to help. Everyone in general was really friendly and helpful. Had a great time. The photos during sunset is a must! The fireflies and the monkeys were defo worth it. Good value for money. Would go again :)Written 24 September 2024
- rebeccabX3315TV0 contributionsAmazing experience loved itOverall a great value trip to experience monkeys in the wild, fireflies and some gorgeous beach photos. We were staying out of Kota Kinabalu at the Shanghai La rasa ria so had a longer transfer journey and had to pay the driver slightly more but the journey/driver/guide were brilliant, communication with WhatsApp prior to the trip gave you confidence. We arrived at a shack by the river where a number of trips & boats were. It’s authentic, there’s clean toilets but don’t have high expectations for high tea. It was tea/juice/ fried banana and something else which tasted quite pleasant. The trip starts with this and then we were shown on a boat and donned our life jackets. The long tailed monkeys are along the river bed, the guides pull close by and attract the monkeys with bananas. They board the boats swinging around you. It’s quite intense but amazing to experience them up close. You can feed them with the banana if you want. A great experience we got lots of photos & videos. You then go hunting g for crocodiles and proboscis monkeys. You do t get as close to these but we sat watching them a while. We then got taken back to the same shack for dinner. This is a buffet of rice, noodles, vegetables and chicken/prawns. It was all very tasty especially the noodles. There’s juice and you can buy fizzy soft drinks. We then reboarded the boat and were taken to a nearby beach where you stay for around an hour. Great sunset, pictures and we saw a fire show. The locals are here selling drinks/snacks. There was a tiger beer stall but buy before you walk down to the beach as he sells out pretty quick and had left by the time we walked back up the beach. Our guide Hector took the most amazing shots of us by the water. It was incredible. We then returned to the boat for the firefly experience. Never would you normally be happy for a fly to land on you and you stare at it not wanting it to move. They are magical and a must see activity. We then returned to the shack and boarded the mini bus for return. I was really disappointed to see no one from our trip tip the guide or driver. They made the trip. Well done and thank you Hector 👏👏👏Written 4 August 2024

- Iain M0 contributionsGreat, professional tourWe had a good time during our experience. Pick up and drop off was smooth and there was good communication with us before we started. The fireflies were amazing and the proboscis monkeys were so interesting. The beach and sky mirror was stunning. The guides were great in helping to take some amazing pictures.Written 8 July 2024
- Mgriffth120 contributionsUnethicalDon't book this tour if you care about the wildlife , it felt very unethical. When we did the river cruise, there was a big lizard sunbathing on the palm tree a few metres above the water (pictured), the boat took us very close to it, and one of the guides pushed it off the tree and into the water. The guides were all laughing. The lizard was fine, but there was no need to disturb it. Also when feeding the monkeys, the tour guides were teasing it by holding out a banana and then snatching it back to try to get the monkeys agitated and show their teeth. Again, this was unnecessary. I don't feel the monkeys should be fed by the tour groups at all because it can result in them being dependent on us for food and affect their natural behaviours. The firefly part of the tour was incredible, there were so many fireflies in the trees and it was magical. That was until the tour guides shone a torch to bring them onto the boat and encouraged tourists to catch them with their hands. Most tourists were gentle which I've read is safe for the fireflies, but some tourists were clapping their hands together, which would kill the fireflies if caught. The guides did not ask them to stop doing this or show the correct method. Overall this has the potential to be a great tour, the river is stunning and we saw proboscis monkeys, the beach is massive and there were lots of sand bubbler crabs which was cool to see, the sunset was very pretty, the fireworks on the beach were cool, and the fireflies were amazing and unique. Unfortunately the tour guides have made this trip unethical, which spoiled it for my group.Written 2 July 2024
- marinakH196KT0 contributionsAmazing experienceWe had an amazing experience w feeding the monkeys and watching the fireflies in front of your face. Strongly recommend this tour. The crew will do everything in order for each person to get the best pictures by the water.Written 13 June 2024
- 741danas0 contributionsDefinitely worth checking outI had a blast on this adventure! I was surprised it was a 2-hr drive from Kota Kinabalu but they made the whole afternoon very much worth it. The guides were funny and made sure we all got super close to the macaques and pointed out the Proboscis monkeys. They even saw a couple monitor lizards and pointed them out. They were really attentive during the sunset photography which I appreciated because I traveled solo and they got some AMAZING shots! The dinner was delicious and the firefly part was hilarious and fun. Totally worth it!Written 19 May 2024
- MalS250 contributionsHighly recommend this tour and tour companyGreat experience with a great group and an even better guide. The fireflies were incredible and the guide worked super hard to get the perfect sky mirror shot.Written 3 May 2024
- Brent K0 contributionsGreat FunEverything went to plan from on time hotel pick up to return drop off. Had Macaque monkeys join us on the boat, proboscis moneys were a bit more elusive but we did glimpse them and the fire flies rounded out the entertainment. Nice dinner and beach too.Written 28 April 2024
- langmanSwitzerland0 contributionsMagical fireflies and mirror photography experienceAn amazing experience overall despite the rain and drizzle during parts of the afternoon. *Pick up was on time and Nick kept everyone in the group posted of the arrival at each hotel. I liked their use of the whatsapp group festure so that we could contact them when needed. *Commuter van was comfy with cool AC. Journey was about 1.5 hrs to the river. * toilets at the River cruise point were very clean and are sitting toilets. Avoid those at the petrol station midway if you could. * Our guides James spoke good English while Dandan was proficient in mandarin. * experience with the long-tail monkeys was "interactive". Guide James was a Wildlife Whisperer. The monkeys came on board our boat to eat bananas and melon seeds but they were not aggressive. James knew how to deal with them. Even the kids could feed bananas to the monkeys. There were more than a dozen of them including a mama with baby. * Also spotted monitor lizard and baby salt water crocodiles. * Dinner was not fancy but satisfying. I enjoyed the home-cooked curry chicken and stir fried bee hoon, amongst other dishes on a buffet layout. * in part II of the tour, we spotted 2 proboscis monkeys on a tree top. It was a matter of good fortune as they are wild and sometimes do not make appearance at all. They do not respond to any lure, apparently. We respected that. * photography on the mirror beach was fun. The rain stopped just in time and the dusk colours were sufficient to provide some lovely hues. James, Nick and Dandan helped guests take photos and they really went all out to help us with natural poses and getting some nice memories even at the expense of themselves getting wet in the tide that came in. I even did a small jump and was surprised how good the photo turned out * The best was at the end when we cruised back to the twinkle lights of the fire flies, which lined both sides of the river. They even flew towards us so that we could play with them up close. The crew knew how to use light to interact with the fire flies so that they responded to our presence. Nick, with a sweep of his hand, put several fireflies into my palm, one at a time. It was a magical Christmas tree experience that would stay in my mind for a long time. * Arrived back in hotel just before 9pm. My heart felt full after the experience with nature and the friendly and helpful team. Every member crew was good, including the skipper who kept us safe and the mama cooks who prepared our dinner. Thank you all for the wonderful time. I wish everyone happiness.Written 30 November 2023
- helgabj0 contributionsWould go again :)We loved the whole thing; saw monkeys as promised, got lucky with weather and a lovely sunset and saw fireflys as well. Everyone very curteous, helpful and knowledgable. Our pictures and experience were great! P.s bring mosquito spray for the evening boat ride and wear a nice light coloured skirt or dress for the beach pics (yellow and white are amazing)!Written 29 October 2023

Lovely beach day. We were promptly picked up from our hotel and taken to the dock which was about 30 mins south of KK. Beautiful boat ride with about 8 other guests to the island, which has nice, soft, white sand beaches and good shelling opportunities. Our guides, Vince and Edward were very attentive to our needs and explained some of the island’s history.
The island itself is quite beautiful with abundant hammocks and wooden lounge chairs on the shore. Drinking water, tea, and coffee were provided, and beer and soda were available for purchase. We brought our own alcohol which didn’t seem like a problem. We also walked down the beach a ways to the other resort. I’m not sure if we were supposed to leave the tour area but no one really seemed to care.
Lunch was incredible, one of my favorite meals in KK.
Very nice and relaxing day. Vince was an excellent organizer and kept us in the loop of island activities throughout the day. Snorkeling was included but we opted out of it since we had gone earlier that week.
Bring your own towel, beverages, snacks, and perhaps a change of clothes if you go swimming. They said there were jellyfish in the water but we went swimming and didn’t get stung at all or throughout the week in KK. I believe they are mostly harmless.
The beach area around the resort was clear of trash, which I’m assuming is collected regularly. Farther down the beach there was some trash, but this seems unavoidable with the amount of plastic observed in the water during our visit here.
The Jet skis were under maintenance but the ATVs were available to ride up and down the beach for 100 MYR.
Oh, there is a pool table and foosball table if you walk to the resort common area building. It was not advertised, we just found it and it seemed cool for us to be there.
Overall wonderful. Would recommend.

Only 20 min boat ride from Jetty, very beautiful place to relax out of the city. However, I saw some volunteers from all around the world they are doing Sea grass and sea wheat planting in the island. Suitable for natural lover, Day Tour is awesome, food is good, wonderful sea creatures when explore the marine life inhabiting here.

This tour was beyond perfect ! Dinawan island is private, with only a small resort that was empty on the day we went, so it was just our group on the island ! It saves you the stress of having to look after your belongings ! The snorkeling session was great as the reef near the island is filled with little fishies (including Nemo and his family !). Back on the island with pristine waters, you can either swim, sunbathe or do another type of water sport. The food was extremely tasty and it was the best food I‘ve had in my KK trip ! Also, special thanks to Raymond, who was our guide for the second time, and managed everything perfectly ! He’s also the best photographer you can find, as well as the most accomodating tour guide ever !

This was a good trip. Schedule was however brought forward from what was advertised, we were picked up at 7.10am which was a tad early for us. It also finished earlier, leaving the island at 13.30/14.00. Food was ok, don't expect gourmet stuff and the afternoon tea snack was a bit rushed due to departure time. Guide, Nick, superfriendly and helpful. The island is nice because it's not crowded at all. Only 15-20 people there on the day. Snorkeling could have been better if water was clearer- but suspect it wasn't because of the rainy season.
Overall would recommend, especially with kids as it's not too crowded and it's quite a relaxing half day tour (started at 7ish and got back to hotel by 3ish). The beach has some hamacs/ sun beds by the shade and whole experience is pretty chilled.

If you would like to try snorkeling, kayaking, and paddle boarding and for an extra price, jet skiing and ATV riding, or just swimming, Dinawan Island is like a paradise to do it, or you could just lay in the hammock. Everything is safe to do.
We just got engaged and were new to Kota Kinabalu. I did try snorkeling and it was great to see the living coral and small colorful fish. The island itself is clean, there are a few white sand beaches, the weather is sunny and not too hot (perfect really), and there are outdoor showers and places to change clothes. The boat ride to the island is short. The lunch was cooked and good.
Edward our tour guide was friendly and good with a camera. He offered to take our pictures and we were very happy with the results. Thank you Edward!

This day trip was seamless with pick up on time from our hotel. 30 min van trip, 20 min boat trip and then a great day snorkelling on this private island. Lunch was delicious. You can buy drinks on the island. There are a few stingers in the area but not painful like jelly fish. Glamping overnight here would be fun. The only down side was the staff on the trip didn’t communicate at all. One guide slept most of the van trip. Definitely value for money and a great experience in Borneo for my son and I.

Such a relaxing tour, I would highly recommend! You get to visit a private island, at the time we went there were about 20-30 people on the whole island, feels like you get the whole island to yourself. Snorkelling was nice, felt very safe, ideal also for people who can’t swim. Lunch and snacks were delicious. There’s good facilities on the island like showers and toilets, a snack store. We got some pictures of us as well :) there are kayaks and sup boards you can use for free and some other equipment for rent. Ideal for solo travellers too :)

A great day all around. Started with an excellent guide, Vince who took advantage of the lack of traffic on a Sunday allowing us a local breakfast at a local coffee shop followed by a stop at a local beach before we went on our way to the island.
The island was beautiful with very few people, felt like it was our own! Lunch was also fantastic. The water was a bit murky for snorkelling, though lovely and colourful fish and coral nonetheless.
All in all a great day! Thanks Vince!

I was picked up at my hotel, along with another couple, on time at 810am. It was a 20-minute drive to the jetty and a 15-minute boat ride to the island. We had about an hour to ourselves on the island. They have snorkel gear, SUPs, and kayaks to use (no extra charge). They have loungers, hammocks, and swings in the water if you just want to chill. We jumped back into the boat to go snorkeling offshore. You have to wear a life vest while snorkeling. I have never used one while snorkeling, so it took a little to get used to it. We saw a lot of fish but no turtles. We headed back to the island and had lunch. They kept bringing out more food. Highly recommend skipping breakfast. We then had about another 90 minutes on the island before tea and got back on the boat to the jetty. We returned to the hotel around 3 pm. A nice relaxing day.
