About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- M6239WGchadr0 contributionsExplore balik pulau cancelled us the evenning before pur tour.I am sure their tour is great but we were never able to experience it as they cancelled us the night before. In the days before the event, they were not responsive to my question taking too long to awnser their messages. Then the day before the activity, they woke up and messaged me at 2pm. I awnsered back at 7pm as we were out exploring all day as tourists do (no wifi) and asked if I could reduce the reservation by one guess as my wife was not feeling good (we are a familly of 7). At 8h52 pm, they said No and offered to rebook us another day. At 09h01 PM they cancelled the activity for the ENTIRE group leaving us with no time to plan anything else, and mostly loosing a day. I had no chance to even reply to their messages Very frustrating for our familly. We came from far away and were looking forward to the activity. For me that was not professional of them. I am sure we would have loved the experience but their customer service was not acceptable unfortunatly. Pictures below. Look at the time of their replies. To their credit, at least they did refund us our money.Written 4 January 2025
- angelarN502RJ0 contributionsCasual Countryside Bike RideGreat way to explore Balik Palau. Very relaxing ride and Eddy is a fantastic guide, he answered all the many questions I had and added more information. I learnt a lot, I had a great casual ride in the country side and it was fun. Bonus extras for being picked up and dropped off from Georgetown. Fully recommends this experience.Written 3 August 2023
- EszterNemeth0 contributionsAn excellent morning exercise to get to know the other side of Penang.I have been many times to Penang but this was the first time that I ventured to Balik Pulau. With friends, we booked a bike ride with Explore Balik Pulau. Eddy, our guide for the tour, came to pick us at 7.00 am at the hotel. Then we drove to the meeting point where we chose our bikes. Our group was about ten people. Don’t expect the latest bikes but they will make the trick because we were cycling on a flat terrain. We often had a stop to listen to Eddy, who was explaining tradition and culture in Balik Pulau while simply enjoying the view in the morning. I did not know that durian trees can grow so tall. 😃 It would have been great to cycle to the sea. A great activity, we had lots of fun. Highly recommended!Written 25 June 2023
- Mobile043979202790 contributionsGreat cycling tour of Balik PulauWe did the cycling tour of Balik Pulau and we loved it. It’s very chilled, okay for all levels. We saw macaques, monitor lizard, and then went to a goat farm where we saw hedgehogs and sugar gliders. Saw palms plantations, fishing village, local temple, nutmeg, durian and jackfruit trees. It’s such a different vibe from Georgetown. Highly recommended. Our guide TC was great, super chilled, super nice, great English. Thank you for a wonderful day out!Written 7 May 2023

- Deborah K0 contributionsNice way to spend a morningWe weren't sure what we were signing up for given Penang Island has a huge hill range... but it was an easy flat ride. We were collected at our hotel in Georgetown at 6:45am for the onward journey across the northern tip of the island in the dark (so we got to see sunrise!). It took around 45 minutes to get to the start point, collecting a few others along the way. The bikes are varied - mountain bikes, fat tyred bikes, road bikes, bikes with no gears... helmets were offered, but not compulsory so declined. The bikes could do with some better maintenance, brakes were a little suspect.. but OK for the task of riding along narrow farm lanes and private roads. In the 10k ride we visited a palm plantation, fishing villages and a dairy goat farm (& petting zoo) - try the goat milk ice cream its delish!. Our guide was very informative, and gave good insights into the diversity of cultures & cultural practices in the area. Highly recommended.Written 1 March 2020
- dumpling_180 contributionsFun and great valueMy family of 5 spent a fun morning exploring the villages of Balik Pulau by bike with this company. We visited a goat farm, a Malay fishermans' village, a Chinese village and also got a great glimpse into life in a Chinese community outside of Georgetown. A refreshment stop and a visit to a Goat Farm to meet the animals and taste goat ice cream and delicious local fruits (durian) rounded off the tour. The riding was easy and mostly flat. Sometimes we rode on the the road, but the traffic was light and the riding was very easy. Predominantly we rode on back streets and through some fields. Be warned that the bikes are in very rudimentary condition and are cobbled together with spare parts. We had a good giggle over the assortment. There is a selection to choose from, but choose carefully as some don't have pedals and my initial bike didn't have brakes; so do aim to find a bike with both components. Helmets aren't worn unless you request for one. Transport to and from accommodation is included in the cost. Something different and worth doing when in Penang.Written 28 July 2019
- azra h0 contributionsBEAUTIFUL SCENERYwe hired a driver for few hours and he took us to the first touristy place he could find. after explaining to him that we are more interested in the way locals live and work he drove us further towards Balik Pulau. on the way we stopped at a Durian stall and had some. we met the owner of the stall Steven and his wife Lilly and after talking to them they were happy for us to go to their farm which was across the road from the stall. it was the best experience we had. we walked for about two hours around a 40 hectare property which was full of Durian trees, waterfalls and other fruits. the nets they use to catch the durian and the way they tie them up in case they fall is amazing in itself as the trees are more then 20m in height. after our venture we had more Durian at Steven and Lillies and thanked them for a wonderful local experience. our driver was exhausted as he doesn't walk much in nature as he drives all day. he was so happy to have had the opportunity to do it with us.Written 16 July 2019

- Mark T0 contributionsBest thing we did in PenangThis was by far my favourite thing we did in Penang. You get to see areas you wouldn’t go on the standard tourist trail. We learned about the other side of the Palm Oil debate from those producing it in a sustainable way, we visited a Chinese fishing village and browsed the local store and had a fab walk round the local goat farm, along with complementary goat’s milk ice cream. In between we got to see the sights and sounds of eastern Penang - small roads off the beaten track. Suitable for most relatively fit people (it’s a flat route), they make sure you are stocked with water and will pick you up / drop you off anywhere on the island. Well done to Eddie and team - we all had a great time.Written 14 April 2019

The half-day Balik Pulau cycle tour already has an interesting itinerary, but Eddie the guide brought everything to technicolour life with his extensive local knowledge and wicked sense of humour.
Ask Eddie anything about Penang and his answer will cover more than your question: culture, population, house and car prices, infrastructure, coffee/tea, fruit trees and wild animals. (Definitely ask him to describe one of the traditional methods of making bread.)
Cycling was easy and at a relaxed pace. It is the ideal way to soak in the village atmosphere and the greenery along the river.
The places of interest are clearly listed in the itinerary and are self-explanatory. The little snack break at the traditional coffee shop was a highlight. The coffee and tea were zingy and strong, and made by a friendly, smiley lady.
I always like to book a local tour on the first day of my visit, wherever I'm travelling. This allows me to get recommendations from an expert local on what to do/avoid for the rest of my visit.
Case in point: after the tour, we wanted a nonya meal and asked Eddie to suggest a restaurant. He did so and dropped us at its doorstep at the end of our tour. The food was superlatively good!
Thank you, Eddie, for a terrific day.

Eddie was great! Engaging everyone with pop quizzes about the areas & things we were seeing, had a good sense of humour and very knowledgeable. The bikes were rudimentary but added to the experience if you ask me! Plenty of stops so those with limited capacity for cycling wouldn’t find it difficult. No hilly terrain so not a challenging bike ride, unless you are my mother who somehow managed to cycle her way into the bush twice. The highlight for us was the goat farm which had plenty of other animals too. Goats ice cream was included in the price which was delicious! I can also recommend the nutmeg goats yoghurt (5RM)! Overall great experience for us (36, 64 & 65 years old) and would definitely recommend!

Overall really happy we did this tour. Bikes are definately the best and coolest way to get around. Pick up was very punctual and although it was an hour long transfer it was pleasant enough. The tour itself took in some nice quiet back roads and TC our guide had some great stories and a wonderful dry sense of humour. The only things that let it down are 1. the bikes which everyone mentions and 2. the amount of rubbish, particularly plastic, which is strewn across the Malaysian countryside. It is the same in parts of my country but it seems worse here because it is in such lovely scenery. Nevertheless we left with a much better sense not just of Penang but of Malaysia than when we started. Thanks TC and our driver.

This tour is an excellent way to explore Balik Pulau, which as our guide TC told us means back of the island. TC gave interesting and engaging explanations of life in a range of communities throughout Balik Pulau. The bike riding itself is relatively smooth and easy, I’d recommend this tour to anyone looking for a relaxing and informative way to explore the other side of Penang.

Wonderful experience! Really enjoyed this bike trip. Our guide was very friendly and informative, both on the drive to the countryside and on the bike ride. We learned so much and had a great time. The guide escorted us to shelter when the skies opened up with rain and he ended up taking the bikes back in a truck and coming back for us in his van. The guide also had a great sense of humor and made the experience very enjoyable. Highly recommend.

We joined Eddie and TC for their half day countryside biking tour. Eddie picked us up from the hotel in George Town and TC was the guide for the day. TC showed us the part of rural Malaysia that is much different than the typical tourist spots of KL and Penang. We got to learn about the countryside living of typical Malaysians. We saw a palm plantation, local village, and a goat farm. The bike ride was not strenuous, at leisure pace with plenty of stops along the way. The tour was one of our highlights while we were in Penang.

A great half day cycle ride around rural Penang, seeing what most likely not 1 in 10,000 visitors to the island ever see! Eddy our guide was very knowledgeable and helpful and offers free collection from your hotel in Georgetown. The tour is about a 1 hour drive from Georgetown but I regarded this as a bonus as you get to see lots more of Penang, with Eddy giving commentary on points of interest along the way. We got water and Chinese pastries and goats milk ice cream along the way included too.

The ride was easy and interesting. It’s a very quiet side of the island and there weren’t many people around. The bikes themselves were a bit run down and old (my brakes weren’t the best). Cycled at a slow place with quite a few stops, including at a cafe when it was pouring.

Nice little cycle trip through the countryside. Eddie our driver and English speaking guide for the trip was really knowledgeable and looked after us very well. Really informative and enjoyable ride to the two fishing villages and goat farm. The bikes were never going to achieve any KOMS on Strava but they were definitely fit for purpose. Would have liked to have cycled a little further but overall an enjoyable activity and great value for money.

Collection at our hotel was on time, AC cold in the car and an hour’s journey through interesting countryside. Our group was split into 2 groups of 6 p, a perfect number to hear the guide and stop when necessary. Bikes were old and NO helmets were available but most of the cycling was off road and pretty safe. Cold drink and Malay cake about half way through. Would recommend this tour if you are in Penang; we had fun and it exceeded our expectations.

We would like to do this tour with our children ( 6 and 7 years). Is it possible? Do you have suitable bicycles for kids?
We have been living in Penang since 2 years. So we don’t need the transfer from our apartment. Could we get another price and a meeting point? We can drive by our own.
