- olgaru19840 contributionsSunrise on the GangaThank you for the tour! This option is perfect for the first acquaintance with the magical city of Varanasi. The organizer also often takes beautiful photos of the participants during this walk. Meeting the sunrise on the Ganges is a wonderful thing.Written 3 June 2024
- Mobile164243663930 contributionsBest experience in a lifetimeThere are just few words to describe our experience with Sonu: absolutely unbeliaveble. He managed to transform a special day in something that we could never forget. The organization was perfect and the atmosphere was breathtaking: the sunset by the banks of the holy ganges, the sound of the ganga aarti and the boat, decorated with flower only for us. We Just couldnt explain the emotions we went through during the traditional hindu rites, the concert and the dances by night. Sonu took care of everything and everything was great. His family was there as well to share this special moment with us. We, as couple, will be always thankful to him. This was simply one of our best memory we have.Written 6 September 2023

We have just visited Varanasi for the third time, and this was also our third boat trip with the amazing guide and host Sonu who has now become a cherished friend of ours.
When you first arrive in the ancient city of Varanasi it all seems crazy and complex and, if I'm honest, a little overwhelming. Because of this I would strongly recommend you book a boat tour with Sonu for your first day because he will most definitely help you make sense of all there is to see there and put everything into perspective. Then, armed with your new information, you will be able to set out to explore this wonderful city from a much better starting point.
Sonu has lived and worked just metres away from the famous ghats his whole life and knows their history and working as well as anyone can. He takes great pride in explaining the ancient history of his city, its geography and the way it is woven into the Hindu religion. He even talks about the places he used to play cricket as a child, and will show you the unbelievable heights the river reaches during monsoon season. He speaks excellent English and is always more than happy to answer any questions you may have.
We have done two Sunrise tours and one Evening tour and they were all fabulous. On each of the Sunrise tours it actually started out foggy but it didn't matter at all. Sonu leads you through the busy streets at dusk to one of his favourite chai stalls where he chats about some of the architecture and history in that area. Then you will wind your way down to the waterfront where your boat will be waiting for you. As the sun rose for us, the fog cleared and revealed the river and the ghats in all their glory. He unwraps the mysteries of the ghats and the cremations that occur at each end (don't worry, he doesn't go too close so you needn't worry if you'd prefer not to watch) and even has time for a second chai stop halfway round.
One overlooked aspect of Sonu's boat tour is that he prefers to use the more traditional rowing boats. Sonu chooses the best boatmen and prefers the traditional human-powered boats for his tour. Completely silent and far more ecologically friendly than the motor-powered versions it makes the tour absolutely blissful. Slowly meandering along the very edge of the river in perfect silence is truly a magical experience and one that I simply cannot recommend enough.
If you are going to take a boat trip in Varanasi, as you will no doubt do, you could do no better than to hire Sonu as your guide.

I took a wonderful boat trip with Sonu and even though we couldn’t see much because of the fog it was a magic experience. Sonu explained us a lot about Varanasi and Mother Ganga, he is really communicative and empathic and has a deep knowledge of this city which he loves (and you can feel it). I am so grateful to have been given the possibility to make this unbelievable experience and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to connect to Varanasi.

Sonu's telling us many stories about Shiva and Moder Ganga, about the city, the river and Varanasi habitat and the pelegrins. It was very interesting to listen to him and slowly ride by the river and enjoy sunrise and peace.

I did the sunrise boat tour and it was a beautiful, exciting and intense experience with a rowing boat... in the silence and sacredness of mother Ganga. Sonu was very good and professional in telling the story of the various ghats but not only that.... he answered all our questions and curiosities by telling us about their traditions and their culture and also talking to us about their daily life. Sonu is a highly trained and very kind guide, discreet and with many interesting facts and anecdotes about Indian culture. Absolutely recommended tour.

My boat tour with Sonu was simply spectacular! The sunrise was breathtaking, casting a golden glow over the serene waters as we sailed. The buzz of the town waking up added to the charm of the experience. Sonu's knowledge and helpfulness made the journey even more enjoyable. Through our conversation, I learned of his deep love for his city, which was evident in his enthusiasm for sharing its beauty with us. I also learned that Sonu is an award-winning photographer! Highly recommend this unforgettable experience, worth waking up early for!

Today I have had an amazing experience in Varanasi. I took a boat ride along the Ganges with Sonu as a guide, and it was something I will never forget. As we traveled the river, Sonu was telling us the history of the city, its traditions and its spirituality in such a close and passionate way that I was hooked from the first moment.
In addition, we were served a delicious chai while contemplating the ghats and rituals that take place on the banks of the Ganges. It was a moment of calm and connection with the essence of Varanasi, really magical.
If you are in Varanasi, I really recommend doing this walk with Sonu. He is a friendly, respectful and patient person, with a thorough knowledge of the local culture. He also has a gift for explaining things clearly and interestingly, and is always attentive to making you feel comfortable and enjoy the experience to the fullest. Don't miss it!

I took the tour on a very foggy day, but even though I couldn't see much, the experience was incredible. Sonu is a guide who really connects with each person in the group, without just repeating information automatically like so many others. He explains everything in a sincere and fun way, helping foreigners understand the complexity of Indian culture and its rituals. He is a very intelligent person with great energy. I told him it was my birthday and he surprised me by providing a delicious chocolate cake and we sang happy birthday in the middle of the river. We went on a small boat without an engine, enjoying the silence, in a group of only 5 people, perfect for those who want a more peaceful experience.

I had the boat tour during sunrise to enjoy the city with the light from another perspective. Before starting we had a delicious chai and Sonu started explaining me a lot about the history of the city with many details, he’s prepared and ready to answer all doubts and questions, he’s very kind and he loves guiding with fun and jokes also. I highly appreciated the experience and I’ll recommend to do it with him. Thanks Sonu!
