Experiencing these mangroves was incredible, to say the least. The way the community is intertwined with sustainable practices over decades is nothing short of a miracle. And hearing first-hand stories of the planting and preserving of the mangroves is just a cherry on top. Ayyappan sir is a treasure trove of stories that will make it feel like you are in the documentary when it’s being shot! Thanks Naveen, Maria, and Neha and hats off to all the storytellers of Tyndis for helping us connect with the heritage of the Malabar region. No amount of pictures and videos can do justice to this place - so don’t Google, just go!

I contacted Naveen at the Tyndis team regarding a tour I wanted for a bird photography in Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary and they came up with a package which included a guide and a boat trip through the mangroves! On less than 24 hours notice, they organized everything, including pickup from my hotel and transfer to the mangrove. Thank you to Binusha, my guide/story teller for all the history she was able to share about Calicut, the region and the people. Thanks also to Siddique, our boatman, who paddled through the mangroves along with the forest guide. They were very relaxed and patient, whilst we accessed areas to view birds that I could photograph. I was in Calicut only for 2 days, being off season, wasn't expecting to see much but was very happy with the experience and with the photographs I managed to capture. Thank you again for organizing things on such short notice!

A boat cruise can never get better than going on a large yet simple country boat, puddled through the emerald river waters. What a beautiful experience was that for me at the Calicut mangrove tour with Tyndis! Really down to earth villagers who are not only excited to see you, but also caring and would even invite you to have a meal at their house! What else could make my idea of cultural immersion better!
I was merely expecting an eco-tour when I booked this mangrove tour in Calicut with Tyndis. But to my amusement, the tour turned out to be a real good village experience. That was just an icing on the cake! I could see the traditional fish farms and fishermen who were busy repairing their nets. The palm-fringed islands were almost resembling a beautiful painting.
I was really unaware about the different varieties of mangrove. Mr. Sushil, the tour coordinator from tyndis beautifully translated the deep knowledge shared by the local mangrove protector, Mr Ayyappan. He has spent his life in conserving mangroves for the village. The wide merits of mangroves for an ecosystem was a real eye-opener!
Adding to the beauty of the tour, I had an opportunity to see the giant train by the Indian Railways passing over my head through the bridge across the river. It was spectacular!
I travelled solo and had a couple sharing the boat with me. With the special personal care given during the cruise, each guest gets to have the best experience of the mangrove tour. It is one of the top things to do in Calicut! Don’t miss out on this!!!

Tyndis made our first trip to Kozhikode simply unforgettable.
We arrived on Deepavali weekend, the weather was rainy, but our ever-cheerful storyteller Binusha from Tyndis pulled out all stops to ensure we could cover as much ground as promised in the trail. Binusha’s spirit of adventure and enthusiasm was infectious -- she drove us expertly in pouring rain, through narrow lanes, and traffic jams, to get us to Kadalundi Reserve (15-20 km from the centre), from where Siddique (a.k.a Siddikka:)), master boatman and local, would row us through the winding estuary and into the mangroves, for the next hour or more.
The scenery was simply breathtaking. The skies were blue when we set out. The river was a sheet of glass. Trains flew across bridges. Brahminy kites circled overhead. Other birds with extra-long beaks chased each other. The mangroves, everywhere, and in every shade of green, beckoned. Everything filled our hearts. Because of the low tide, Siddikka literally had to plough through the river, even as he gave a crash course in rowing to my daughter :) Close up by the mangroves, Binusha and Siddikka told us all about their different varieties, how they came to be planted by a co-villager, and how they have helped enrich the entire ecosystem. At some point, we ‘parked’ the boat bang in the middle of the river and jumped in – the water was just a few inches deep! As the sky became overcast, we reluctantly made our way back to the river bank after sipping some refreshing elaneer (tender coconut juice)….and with a promise to be back. Thank you Binusha, Siddikka, Naveen for making this such a warm and beautiful experience for us!
P.S: Why I loved Tyndis is they make you feel at home from the word go. They also custom-make their trails depending on the time/duration of your stay. And their story teller puts in the same amount of effort, whether you are just two, or a group of 10. We chose to combine the Mangroves Trail with a visit to the uru-making factory (uru is a huge boat/ship made entirely in wood and exported mainly to the Gulf – one of a kind made only in Calicut, so another must-see) and a pitstop at the Beypore beach – as all of these are on one side of the town. If you have your own vehicle, and weather permits, you could also use a ‘jangar’ that will ferry you and your vehicle across from Kadalundi to Beypore, and save time.
You may prefer going into the mangroves during high tide, as parts of the estuary become difficult to navigate during low tide (though we got to see the breathing roots and stand in the river!) You could check with Tyndis for the best timings beforehand. Also, if you're not a rain person, you may prefer a visit when its not raining.

It was a pleasant surprise that Tyndis Travel had for us during the Calicut mangrove tour at the Kadalundi Mangrove Reserve in Calicut. We were expecting something similar to the Pitchavaram Mangrove Experience in Tamilnadu which is one of the best mangrove tourism in India. That tour was a couple of years ago. But, it happened to be a whole different experience. A beautiful cruise experience on a country boat - neatly arranged and equipped for tourists. The place itself is a cool location for relaxation. Every angle gives u an option for great photography.
I was keen about the Mangrove forests. The journey at Calicut mangrove tour through the reserve were almost similar to Pitchavaram - but both the hospitality of the boatmen and storyteller, and the village life that surrounded the backwaters were unmatchable by whatever we have experienced earlier. It is one of the best options for leisure if you are on a Kerala tour with family!
Ms. Binusha, our young and beautiful lady storyteller was a gem. She explained about the great efforts put forward by the local community and various organizations in preserving the mangroves. She was really good at her job of storytelling. Mr Ayyappan and Mr Siddique - our loyal boatment carefully navigated us through the mangroves, taking care of not causing any disturbances to my photography! I’m really grateful to them for their care!
It is really wonderful how beautifully the mangrove park is maintained. The reserve provides all the basic facilities like washrooms, drinking water, information centre, car parking, etc for the tourists. The boat is also equipped with good life jackets and safety measures. They even have trained guards who are really good at saving drowning people!
We were really humbled by the beautiful arrangement of the Calicut mangrove tour by Tyndis. It was one of its kind experience in Calicut for us! I certainly recommend this experience for people visiting Calicut!

The mangrove tour was a very pleasant experience. The quiet waters and beautiful sights offered relaxation from the busy city. We felt particularly positive about contributing to the cleanup of the mangroves, which unfortunately are still very polluted. Also the refreshing coconut was a pleasant surprise.
However, we were lacking more in-depth storytelling. It very much felt like a relaxing canoe trip with a strong focus on Instagrammable pictures. For example, when asked why the man behind the initiative to plant more mangrove trees did this, the answer was "oh, he just wanted to do this". There was no knowledge about the mangrove trees themselves besides the name of the trees, something that was also in the leaflet. And finally, it seemed we knew more about the birds than our guide.
All in all, a pleasant experience, but it seems the English speaking guide still needs to learn much more to match the description of the tour here on TripAdvisor.
