- L5936ZSfedericar0 contributionsA taste of Bengaluru cultureThis experience was definitely one of the highlights of our stay in India. Archana and Rajesh were fantasic hosts, they immediately made us feel welcomed and they guided us on a little journey through their culture. Not only was lovely to learn how to prepare some traditional dishes from the Southern Indian cuisine but it was also priceless to be able to do it in their house and to get to know them a little. The passion they have in what they do is really inspiring and I would recommend this experience to everyone interested in learning a bit more about Indian culture.Written 25 January 2023
- suzanne t0 contributionsA rich cultural experience not to be missedMy day with Archana was an adventure every newcomer to south India should experience —even if it’s the only thing you can do in Bangalore! Archana generously shared her life, culture and family as if we were old friends. Not only did she tell me things I would never have known to ask, she also graciously answered questions I wouldn’t have been able to ask anywhere else. From learning how to tie a sari, to understanding religious practices and visiting some neighborhood temples, to trying local sweets and delicacies at the street market, to learning South Indian cooking and eating techniques and sharing lunch and conversation with her sweet mother and husband in their home, the day was more full and rich than I ever expected it could be. Archana’s passion and love for her country and culture allowed me to enjoy Bangalore in an intimate and special way that every inquisitive traveler should experience. Don’t miss it!Written 19 October 2022

- quiettraveler20160 contributionsMarket + Cooking Experience + MealWe met Kaushuk and his wife at the Ghandi Market as they suggested. They showed us around- had us sample Indian snacks and bought us fresh fruit drinks. We had wanted to observe how they chose and purchased some ingredients for the meal. So we got to do that. Then they drove us to their home. There was a welcome sign for us at the door and as we came through the door they splashed rose water on us and put a red mark on my forehead. It was a very welcoming experience. The apartment is very nice. On to the cooking. Kaushuk served us very excellent home made chai. He explained how he made it. My husband who loves chai said it was great! Then there were trays of sample ingredients all set up. Kaushuk and his wife went over each ingredient. Very helpful and it was so nice that they had it all set up. Then on to cooking. We observed and took part in many aspects of the cooking. It was fascinating . Kaushuk and his wife very patiently answered our many many questions all evening. Time to eat!! The meal was delicious and it was served as a lovely traditional tali. This whole experience was wonderful! I am so glad that I got to do it.Written 7 February 2020
- leoac500 contributionsVery Enjoyable Cooking Demo & LunchBinu was lovely and talked me through how everything was made. Her English is perfect as she used to live in the UK. We cooked a chicken dish, ghee rice and some vegetable curries. I had a great time and her son also joined us for lunch and it was great to meet him too. If you are looking to pick up some “home cooking” tips I would definitely recommend booking with her.Written 4 February 2020
- 43Karin710 contributionsFantastic experienceIt was just great to be hosted by Archana, her husband and her mother. I got a welcome with a coffee and different self made traditional Indian snacks and after that we went to the market with Archana and her husband by car. They explained everything in detail about Indian fruits and vegetables, culture, history and traditions aswell as food and cooking. We made lots of pictures, bought some food and some tipical Indian souverniers. They even offered me to visit a temple with them. Once back home Archana and her mother prepared the rest of the meal. Archana was preparing things and getting everything ready already two days before I came! I had a wonderful meal on a banana leave with a huge variety of dishes. The time until 3pm was a bit short and we could have gone on for another hour or two if I did not have a next appointment. I have to say a big thank you, it will always be remembered as a unique local experience!!Written 19 January 2020
- bitesizedtravelsAUS0 contributionsFantastic experience with ArchanaWe booked a market visit and cooking lesson - what we ended up with was a fabulous cultural experience. We were warmly welcomed by Archana and her family, followed by an enjoyable trip to the market where we learnt about different vegetables, sweets & other products. Archana then produced the most wonderful meal, talked us through the cooking process and showed us all the spices she regularly uses. We sat down to a beautifully presented meal and learned more about the local culture. We had a lovely few hours with Archana and her family and would recommend!Written 14 November 2018
- san3_u230 contributionsLocal experience at a cozy houseWith the host, Binu, I had a wonderful time and very local foods moderately spiced for me in this tour. As a person born in Japan and lives in Singapore, I was very curious about what's kind of ingredients are used for Indian food. So, I made up a mind to have this cooking experience. Binu welcomed me warmly, and we had a chat over beer. After that, I could see what's happening in Indian food cooking process, which was quite new to me. Then, we enjoyed typical North Indian food (seems we can select South Indian or North Indian food). The house is really nice and amazingly quiet, though it is located in the center of Bangalore. Not only did I enjoy the food, but also the time I spent at Binu's house was memorable.Written 10 November 2018
- Irene04040 contributionsAmazing time with the lovely hostThe host family were such lovely couple. The meal was prepared with love. She also pay attention to her guest needs, such as if drinks were too sweet, whether I like my food in particular manner. Most of all the couple has a big heart and willing to share about their local cultures with me.Written 22 November 2017
- Ian_ncl0 contributionsNot really a cooking lesson.Archana was a wonderful host. We enjoyed our market visit. The prepared food was excellent and explanations of the dishes very informative. There was not an opportunity to cook which we were hoping for and have enjoyed on other similar experiences. It would have been nice if the hosts had joined us in eating the meal.Written 26 September 2017

We had a very fun, entertaining and delicious evening with Archana, her husband and son. All three of them were very kind and gracious and very welcoming. Archana showed us how to make her favorite dishes with lots of heart and soul and did I mention how delicious everything was? In addition to being an excellent chef she is just plain fun to talk with. If I ever visit Bangalore again I will add another visit with Archana to my itinerary.

Archana and her family are really friendly! We felt very comfortable in their home and had a lot of time to talk about Indian culture, etc. Archana and her husband answer all questions.
The dishes we cooked were all very simple and therefore well suited to being cooked in Europe. We received the recipes directly. It is also really nice to get an insight into a real Indian household.

Archana, her husband, and son made me feel very welcome in their home and showed great hospitality. First, we had some masala dosa and moringa (a local superfood) cooked traditionally with her showing me all the steps (I could tell it was very traditionally, with her mother helping with the dosa. Then we did a market visit (part of my tour type) where Archana was happy to cater to my interests like visiting a spice shop and cooking tools shop. She also took me to an incense shop, which seemed very kind since it wasn't really involving food there. Then we went back to her place for a huge meal with several dishes. I helped with the 2 salads and a wonderful coconut chutney that was much richer than those served in restaurants. The meal involved a few dishes she walked me through, which was good since it would have been too much to do more than the 5 recipes we did. There were about 10 different dishes as part of the meal. Definitely, the best meal I had here in Bengaluru due to the freshness of the flavors and the great company. There were also sweets like holige and mysore pak. Truly an experience I will remember for the rest of my life. They also were happy to give me valuable advice about places to buy souvenirs and anything I asked about, like a good coffee shop to stop in. (I had the 5 hour tour with the market.)

Such an amazing experience! Archana and her family are wonderful people, very knowledgeable, friendly and welcoming, we truly felt at home. They told us so much about their culture and way of life and of course, the cooking was incredible. After preparing the food we sat at the table to eat the delicious feast whilst we continued to chat with them, it was so nice and an experience we will keep close to our hearts forever. Highly recommended!

We have enjoyed our dinner with Archana and her husband. They have told us all about Indian culture, mostly about the food habits! She taught us about the spiritual meaning food has in India, as well as how certain foods affect your (gut)health and how to counter balance negative effects.
After we cooked and ate from a banana leave, it was definitely delicious and would recommend!
Grandma even taught us how to make dosas!

Had an amazing time, Archana is a great chef who uses vegetables and herbs from her own garden. She accommodated us with our dietary restrictions and told us many insightful stories behind the food. Great class if you want to learn about south Indian cuisine!

My husband and I had a delightful evening with Archana and her family, who also pitched in. Thanks to their participation, this activity was not only delicious and educational, but also an enriching cultural experience. How much we learned about the Indian way of life! While we were doing food preparation in the dining area, Archana‘s mother was cooking in the kitchen and her mother-in-law was making rice upstairs. We even had a visit from her sister, who was celebrating her birthday, and she brought food as well. We enjoyed quite a feast!! We highly, highly recommend this activity. We felt we became part of the family for an evening, and it was a great first night in India for us. ❤️❤️❤️

A very warm welcome at Archana and Rajesh's home with all other family members. Excellent meal prepared and eaten in a traditional way. Archana talked passionately about her vegetable and herb garden and showed us how herb mixtures were made. Very educational. We return home with recipes and beautiful memories.
A side note, we were really guests and didn't cook anything ourselves.

Feb 2019 • Family
This was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience for our family, and we are so grateful we were able to meet Archana and her family, and spend the afternoon together.
We are a traveling, homeschooling family (myself, my husband and our 11-year-old daughter). My daughter loves to cook and we try to take cooking classes wherever we travel. This experience went way beyond a cooking class - Archana, Rajesh as well as Archana's mother and aunt all shared so much of their culture and family with us. We all enjoyed ourselves but the experience especially resonated with my daughter. Archana shared how she uses food as medicine for her family and ways to nourish my daughter as she continues through puberty, taking into account different spices and needs. Her mother shared pictures of Archana and Rajesh's wedding and recounted the day to us. And needless to say the meal was excellent.
While I certainly have *a lot* left to learn about Indian cooking (and indeed we just focused on one region's cuisine) I left with a deeper understanding of the art and culture behind Gowda cuisine and that feels more valuable than a bunch of recipes!

Nov 2017 • Business
This is a tour for those wishing to get off of the beaten path and have a truly local India experience. I was in Bangalore on business and I took a coworker who lives there, although these foods were new to him too. Archana and her family greeted us at their place. Her entire family made us feel welcome and we spent hours having fun talking and watching her cook (we could have helped with the cooking too, but I was content just watching). After a short education on the various spices and plants of the area, Archana cooked traditional dishes from the Karnataka region of India and explained as much of the details of the process as one wanted to hear. We ended up eating pickle (chili sauce), chow chow (a vegetable salad), raita (similar to tzatziki-yogurt and cucumber with pomegranate seeds), kosambari (lentil salad), fried fish, sihi kasubu (sweet center rice pasta/peroghi), papad and sandige (varieties of bread/poppadoms with deep fried hot chili pepper), ragi mudde (ball made from millet flour) and hitakbele chicken (spicy sauce with chicken and potato pieces) all off of a banana leaf. The evening lasted several hours and was the tour was well worth doing. It's one of those experiences that I will always remember.

My husband and I have booked this cooking class for March 3, but I need to tell the chef that I am allergic to lentils. I can try a spoonful of a lentil dish, but I cannot do a large amount of lentils in the meal. My husband is fine with lentils, but I will need to have a couple other dishes.
