About
In the high lands of Ladakh, there are several hidden places, customs, and natural wonders that are not very popular but they have been part of the local community living there. This tour takes one to such places, spots, and practices where the uniqueness of the destination can be seen and experienced. The communities living in extremely remote regions have recently received the basic facilities such as electricity through Global Himalayan Expeditions' electrification expeditions and that triggered further tourism development. This tour makes arrangements at these authentic homestays and contributes to local income generation.

About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- Tourist396698977610 contributionsBook Direct with HOMESTAYSWe decided to do a homestay during our visit to Leh Ladakh for a different experience in the region. Dealing with Mountain Homestays was not straightforward as hoped and they were lacking in understanding. We found them to be pushy and unempathetic. They insisted that we pay prior to arriving, however due to complications in international banking this proved very difficult. Upon arriving in Leh, my partner experienced altitude sickness combined with bad belly. After paying cash at the local Leh Office- Mountain Homestays gave us 40 minutes to get a medical certificate to claim a refund, this was simply not possible given timing and condition of my partner and gave us little choice. We loose all the money paid ( 28K+ Rupee- 4 nights) or push on as planned. We stayed at two different homestays. The Sakti homestay was fantastic ( book direct insta @saktiecohomestay_21. Sadly the - Pangong homestay @ Mann was for us more of room stay, with little of the 'home' in homestay. All in all, sadly not what we were hoping. We would encourage people to do your homework and try book directly with the stay if possible.Written 16 January 2024
- apekshas5870 contributionsCute homestay :)They say if you haven't explored leh , you haven't seen it all. We ended our journey by seeing the most pristine lake which was pangong . The clear sky , majestic mountain view and the vibrant colours of lake made it feel unique. But when we thought this was it , we made our way to maan village and a homestay , where in they made us felt welcomed. The host Mr dorje and Ms dollar were very polite and sweet . The best part of the homestay was the kitchen ( well kept and tidy ) . I loved the whole vibe and would recommend everyone to stay there. Oh yess I forgot one more thing we ate authentic Ladakhi food which was yummyyy !!!Written 3 September 2021
- Shelly M0 contributionsAmazing old monastery, completely worth itI am very glad I took the chance and booked this trip. Sumda Chung is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. A small, very old monastery, tucked away in the remote mountains, everything was covered in snow and ice when I visited, but the skies were clear and sunny and the atmosphere completely still and pure. The journey there alone was worth it - past the frozen Zanskar and Indus rivers, surrounded by the most incredible mountain beauty. Mountain Homestays were also really organised and helpful. They replied quickly to all messages and made every effort to ensure everything ran smoothly. This isn't always the case in Leh (!) so I'm very glad they were so kind and thoughtful. They are also a social enterprise, so the proceeds go towards improving conditions for rural families. All in all, I can completely recommend both this tour and Mountain Homestays. If I visit Leh again, then I will be sure to do more with them as they really stood out as being so helpful. Can't recommend it enough!Written 19 February 2020
- Manjit850 contributionsVisit to Ladakh - Village TsogtsyAn excellent time staying at the homestays of Village Tsogtsy. Mountain Homestays provided us with best arrangements inspire off season. - tashiyademel0 contributionsDiscover the Hidden Gems of LadakhWhen I first began researching my trip to Ladakh, I was overwhelmed by the number of tour groups offering personalised travel packages. Once I came across Mountain Homestays and learned about the work they do, I was convinced that I could travel responsibly with their expertise. I am extremely thankful to Gagan, and his team for putting together the perfect itinerary. Everything from logistics, to accommodation, meals, and guides was all perfectly curated by their team. As a solo female traveler, I felt completely safe during my travels. My guide, Spalzang, was extremely knowledgeable about the local environment, culture, and wildlife and turned out to be one of the best travel companions. Thanks to Mountain Homestays, not only did I get to experience the true essence of the mountain regions, I was also able to make a positive contribution towards women’s empowerment, livelihoods, and the sustainability of the Ladakhi environment and community. I couldn’t recommend them enough!Written 24 September 2019

Great intimate experience with a love Ladakhi family who warmly welcomed us into their home. We visited the last monastery in india. The quaint Yarma Gompa. Namgyal and Tsering were the best hosts.
