Itinerary

Day 1: Dibrugarh

Pass By: Bhaskar Home Stay, Jyoti Nagar, Dibrugarh, Assam 786005, India
Arrive at Dibrugarh Airport in Assam. Dibrugarh marks the eastern most town of the plains of India, with culture hugely influenced by the tea estates and the river. Rest of the day can be spent exploring local markets, going for a stroll along the Brahmaputra riverside, the tea estates or visit a Buddhist orphanage. Evening will be free for group interaction and learn about the region from the group leader and tour guide.

Day 2: Dibrugarh - Mon

After breakfast, visit a nearby tea garden and go on a guided tour of the tea factory to learn about the processing and manufacturing of different grades of tea. Then, travel to Mon town (5-6 hours) in the Patkai hills of northern Nagaland. Mon district in the far eastern corner is one of the most remote regions of India. The fierce Konyak Tribe are the inhabitants of these forested hills and are also one of the major tribes of Nagaland. They are known for their old traditions of head hunting, tattooed faces, wood carving and gun-making. Their head-hunting expeditions stopped only in the 1960s. Evening at leisure.

Day 3: Mon

Spend the day witnessing the celebrations of Aoling, the spring festival marking the local New Year and also beginning of the sowing season. It is the most important annual event of the Konyak tribespeople. Observe the ritual ceremonies, animal sacrifices along with cultural dances performed by villagers in their colorful ethnic costumes. In the afternoon, visit the nearby villages of Old Mon, Hongphoi and Wangla to see the rural life and interact with the villagers who still live in traditional long houses and are decorated with animal skulls and hunting trophies. Evening at leisure with campfire.

Day 4: Mon - Longwa - Mon

Go on an excursion to the frontier village of Longwa (2 hours), where half of the village falls in Myanmar. Visit the home of the Angh (village chief), whose house interestingly is divided by the international border. Interact with the chief, listen to the tales of the old hunting days from the Konyak elders. See the wood carvings and handicrafts made by the villagers. Visit a Morung (traditional bachelors dormitory) where the young Konyaks learn hunting skills. Also walk through their Jhum farms where the Konyaks practice slash and burn farming. Return to Mon for an evening at leisure with campfire and stories.

Day 5: Mon - Kaziranga National Park

After an early breakfast, leave for Kaziranga National Park (8-9 hours) in Assam. En route you will make a stop at the historical town of Sivasagar to learn more about Assam's rich medieval history when this land was ruled by the mighty Ahom Kingdom for more than 600 years. Kaziranga means the ‘Land of Red Deer’ in local Karbi language. It is an UNESCO natural heritage site which was declared a National Park status by viceroy Lord Curzon in 1905 due to the large number of species and rich biodiversity of animals and migratory birds in the grasslands. Evening at leisure.

Day 6: Kaziranga National Park

In the morning, embark on a guided jeep safari in the central range of the grasslands in Kohora to sight the famous one-horned Asiatic rhino. Also see the Wild Buffaloes, Elephants, Swamp deer, sloths, Jungle cats, mongoose and birds such as Pelican, Parakeets, Fish Eagle and Drongos. During the day, one can visit the interesting Orchid Park, rubber plantations and nearby villages of Karbi tribe. After lunch, go for another jeep safari in the forests of the offbeat eastern range at Agoratoli, which is a good for sighting migratory and wetland birds and sometimes Royal Bengal tigers on the banks of Brahmaputra. In the evening, see traditional dances and cultural program of the different indigenous communities of Assam.

Day 7: Kaziranga National Park - Majuli

After an early breakfast, proceed towards Nimati Ghat (2-3 hours) to board a ferry across the mighty Brahmaputra River to Majuli (1 hour), the largest river island in the world and also a heritage site for Assamese culture and traditions. Afternoon will be free at leisure to cycle around the island and visit villages of Mishing tribe, the inhabitants of the island. Relish Mishing cuisine for dinner and try their Apong, the local rice beer.

Day 8: Majuli

After breakfast, explore the vast island. Begin with visiting the 17th century Auniati and Kamalabari Sattra (monasteries) of the Vaishnava sect of Hinduism which was founded by the Assamese saint Srimanta Sankardev. There is also a small museum at Auniati which gives a glimpse of the simple life in the monasteries. Next, visit Samuguri Sattra, better known as the mask making centre where the monks make traditional masks for the Bhaona dance dramas during the annual Raas festival. See a cultural program of Sattriya dance or Gayon Bayon musical performance by the monks. Also visit the riverside Salmara village which is one of the last places in Assam where villagers make the traditional pottery ware. If time permits, visit a local school and interact with the village children. Enjoy the sunset scene on the banks of Brahmaputra or one can also visit a nearby Sattra to see the local folk gather for evening prayers.

Day 9: Majuli - Jorhat
