          Beautiful landscape
Me and my little sister went and generally enjoyed the tour, landscape is beautiful once you get outside the city. Has a cultural dance and history part before so was nice to see the African influence on the area.

          Great Hospitality
It was a great experience. The hospitality we received on the tour was truly touching. I would say that I wish that we received a little more instruction on horseback riding but we had guides the whole way and got the hang of it pretty quickly. The lunch was probably the best meal we ate while visiting Colombia. I would definitely recommend this tour.

          Disappointing
We booked this tour in hopes of having an adventure and learning the history. Unfortunately, we experienced neither. The "guide" of bus was an hour late to pick us up. The one hour plus, trip to Palenque was uneventful with little discussion and no information from the guide. Once we arrived, we just wondered around for about fifteen minutes with no clue what we were doing. Finally the guide told us we were to tell the cook what we would like for lunch that was to come later. Then we began the "tour" on foot. We walked to random places with little information about why we were visiting each building. After more than two and a half hours, the others and us were ready to give up and just go back to our hotel based on the lack of guidance and timing. Finally, two horses arrived and the two of us took the "Eco-Tour on Horseback", consisting of a thirty minute ride down a street, down a short litter strewn trail, across a creek and then we returned to the group. The two non English speaking men with the horses, walked beside us for the thirty minute ride and seemed to be nice. We have taken many tours such as this and have never found one we would not recommend, but now we have. Finally we ate quickly and returned about three blocks from our hotel and told them we would walk the rest of the way back. We would never recommend this tour to anyone. The biggest waste of money and time in Colombia.

          Walking amongst the ancestors!
WOW, what an amazing venture, the provider was very informative, knowledgeable and kind. Palenque is an amazing town with a rich history, the people are incredibly proud of their heritage and it shows, the music, the food and the dancing is artful. We went to the replica of the old village on horses and it felt perfect, I felt like I was riding amongst the ancestor's of the village, it was a warm feeling of welcoming spirits. Overall, a must see!!

If you truly want to understand the history of Colombia, then you MUST take this tour!
This was such a wonderful addition to our trip to Cartagena. This is the first free African settlement in all of the Americas. Escaped slaves fought to form this community and maintain it throughout several hundred years. The tour is conducted by residents of the Palenque - an important connection when amongst those who actually live in the community. The guides treated us wonderfully and the horses were assigned by comfort level and riding experience. Lunch in the open air restaurant was phenomenal (we all got the fish). To truly appreciate the history of the Americas, you must connect ALL of the dots for a better understanding of where the world is today. Book this tour! Approach it with an open mind and be sure to tip everyone who cares for you on this amazing tour.

I just completed this tour. I had one of the best experiences on horse back. It was a solo tour, where my guide showed me all around Palenque. He was extremely nice. We even did a mini lesson translating between English, Palenque and Spanish. The lunch provided as part of the trip was very tasty. I was literally cooked in for us specially while we were touring. Everything was perfectly timed. The residents of Palenque were extremely nice and friendly and seemed genuinely happy that we visited. I felt at home. The cultural lessons were even more impressive, as I got a chance to learn how the people of Palenque lived their daily lives, saw a soccer game, and drank local beer. This is a definite must go for anyone who wants to see how local live, explore Colombian culture, and explore black history in Colombia and South America. My tour guide even brought us to his home, where I met his family, who were extremely nice. I love this trip so much that I have to return with my family. I cannot sing enough praises for my experience. I am so impressed about the fact that everything was catered for from the time of pickup at the hotel lobby to drop off at the lobby. I definitely recommend this tour and would give it 10 stars out of 5 if I could lol. If you have half as good of an experience as I did, I know you will be happy you participated in this tour.

A great day of horseback riding.
We had a great time . The tour guide was a genuinely nice person but as mentioned before he is more reserved and not very talkative. I speak English and my wife speaks Spanish so she was able to communicate better even though he did speak some English. I am a very big guy and the horses they gave me were very well behaved and had no problems getting me where I needed to go. We went on about a two and a half hour ride and it was more than enough for me. I'm sure you could go farther if you were a bit more of an experienced rider and had the desire to go farther. We did see wild parrots and that was the first time for me. The guide did tell us there was the possibility of seeing a monkey but unfortunately I did not see one on my trip. The lunch was outstanding it was home-cooked over an open fire stove. The bathrooms were clean and all of the people seemed very happy that we were there. I have been on many horseback rides around the world and I really enjoyed this one. This course even though it was a little more difficult than where I have been in the past the guides were right there to help us every step of the way. They even offered to walk by our horse if we needed. With the guides right there with us I would have felt very comfortable with my 8-year-old son if he had been with us. I felt very safe throughout this trip. Tom Casey

          Unforgettable Experience!!
The most memorable and authentic travel experience I have had in my life. The rich history of the first free land in America was incredible. My tour guides were so friendly and knowledgable, picked me up right on time from my hotel and provided everything I needed lunch, water, and a beautiful ride on horseback. 10/10 would recommend!!!

The Reason Why I Visited Colombia
I learned of Palenque 50 years ago but to travel to the area was nearly impossible. When I heard that San Basillio de Palenque was now a UNESCO heritage site, I decided to go. I'm sorry that I didn't spend the nite to hear music. My day visiting the area was wonderful. We went with an attentive tour guide and driver from Cartagena. The local Palenque tour guide lacked interest from his heart. He gave a quick history and was usually looking at his cell phone. Thankfully, I had done a lot of research and understood the history so I was grateful to just be in Palenque. The immediate town is small with dirt roads. The homes, buildings are painted very colorfully. This is the first free town that slaves escaped to and lived isolated for 100s of years. Their language is unique and rooted along with many customs, in the area of Africa that they originated. Research indicates they are from the Congo. School children were walking home for lunch when we arrived. We met with the herbalist and healer. I shared my teachings from Peru and we became strongly connected. We walked thru the center where there are powerful memorial statues. Lunch was delicious with a fish dish. I would have loved to have stayed and learn some cooking techniques and again, the music, I'm told is in the evenings. For those that are interested in culture, history, and music, this is an off the beaten track place to visit.

This experience was nice and authentic. Eric was great, he was interactive and funny and shared some history about the Palenque culture, traditions, beliefs and even some words. We played instruments, we sat and watch the tribal dancers and they made it fun and interactive but also wished it was a bit longer, I guess I was expecting more of a performance. It was my husbands birthday so they sang happy birthday and made him dance (something he never does)... We ate some good food, I recommend the fish. Also saw the towns herbalist and natural ways that they use herbs to cure sickness. I also enjoyed the stop we made exploring the first Colombian Boxer of Palenque the gym it was fun getting a few jabs in. Overall I enjoyed the tour and would recommend it.

I love snorkeling. So when I booked a spring break trip to Colombia, the first items in my duffel bag were my fins, vest, snorkel and mask. After this tour, it was clear nothing could top this. The guide was an attorney who was born in San Basilio and loved his home so much that he spent time aside from preparing cases to show it to others. The other guests included an anthropology professor who had lived in Colombia earlier in her life. The road to San Basilio was temporarily blocked so we took a detour. Even this unplanned route through Turbaco was insightful and fun. We were treated as honored guests from a barefoot dance to the statue of Benkos Biohi to the studio where Kombilesa Mi record. I've snorkeled in St. Croix, Phuket, the North Shore, theAlgarve, Belize and Australia. This trip is the first one that was so great that I took my gear back home dry.

I selected this tour because I was interested in learning more about the brave and revolutionary people of Palenque. Eric was and excellent tour guide who is from Palenque and knew many of the locals by name.
During the tour we walked through the village, stopping by a local spiritual leader, medicine man, museum, local hip hop performer, and had a home cooked meal. We also had the opportunity to learn to play a few rhythms specific to Palenque on the drums.
I learned a lot about the town and the people and would highly recommend this trip for those of African decent and those interested in learning more about the great accomplishments of the African people in Colombia. Wear comfortable shoes to walk around the vilage

We booked this tour based on the positive reviews and it superseded our expectations. Ronal, the tour guide picked us up from our hotel and drove us to San Basilio de Palenque, giving us insight and answering questions along the way. Once arriving he walked us through town (driving is also an option but we opted to be on foot) and shared the history and insightful more recent stories about Palenque. We had the opportunity to meet his family and received a drum lesson.

Ronal is a wealth of knowledge and the perfect host. This is definitely an experience we will remember forever. If you’re looking for an authentic and meaningful way to experience Palenque this is it!

The Freedom Tour of Palenque was amazing and very organized! After the nearly one hour drive, we arrived in Palenque and began our walking tour. Our Tour Guide (Lorenzo) provided so much valuable information about the city's origin and his birthplace. On the tour, we were taught several local phrases and saw the young people perform who engaged the audience as active participants. The Tour Guide continually provided details about the traditions and culture of the people.
A delicious lunch was included! I wish I had more cash available.
This time was well worth it and I advised many people of this MUST DO tour during their visit to Cartagena!

This tour is a must! Make sure you get Lorenzo as your tour guide. He actually grew up in Palenque which made a tour more personable and more in depth in terms of getting the full Afro cultural experience in the town of Palenque. For anybody trying to learn more about their Afro roots this tour is highly recommend it and make sure you get Lorenzo as your tour guide.

It was a wonderful experience learning about the African connection with Colombia. Going to Palenge (Palenque) was what was expected in terms of hearing of the experiences of enslaved people. Our tour guide Eric is a native of Palange and was extremely knowledgeable about the history and the present state of the community. His English was very good and polished, to help those of who were are challenged in trying to speak and understand the Spanish language. The lesson was enriching. The group bonded well, even as no more than two of the 8 of us knew each other before the trip. Two of us were solo but didn't feel left out. There were at least two tour options going to Palenge. I chose this one, and believe I made the best choice because the guide was from the community (though I don't know where the guide for the other tour is from). This tour, for sure, helped to keep things in perspective.

A few things to keep in mind. Eat breakfast before the tour. It is a hour and a half drive up to Palenge. Also, when they calculated the time, they didn't include the drive. So add at least 3 hours to the experience (I left my hotel at 8 a.m. and returned at 4:30 p.m.

There is a lot of walking so bring comfortable shoes, and you may want to bring some water (and a snack). Lunch is the last part of the tour, so that is after 1:30. Bring tip money (for the dancers, lunch staff, as well as the guide and driver).

This is a well organised tour. As a local, Eric is fantastic at telling you all about the history and sights of interest and you feel like you're really contributing to the community. Eric taught us a few phrases in the local language, which is something we wouldn't have the chance to learn elsewhere. We especially enjoyed the musical elements and getting to actually participate in them. The only thing that was missing was a gift shop to buy Palenque souvenirs that could further support the community such as the wonderful t shirts that the guides wear, or flag coloured keyrings.

This tour was truly amazing! I learned so much during my time on this trip. The dinner that was served was absolutely delicious and I have zero complaints. I recommend grabbing some breakfast or a snack before you are picked up because the drive is over an hour long and the meal is at the end of the tour. This tour is completely worth taking.

We were picked up from our hotel in a small SUV, guides were on time. Eric, was friendly and oozed with joy to share about his ancestors and their journey to freedom. We felt safe and one with the locals. Wear comfortable walking shoes and clothes. It was HOT! This tour was quite liberating and I would recommend as a must See to experience the true side of Afro-Colombian Culture. Bring Money for tips!
