- 944RicardoP0 contributionsExcellent ExperienceOur trip to Kosovo was absolutely fantastic from start to finish. Helen, our driver, was not only highly skilled behind the wheel but also incredibly knowledgeable about the region’s history and culture. She provided us with fascinating insights into Kosovo’s past and present, making the journey much more enriching than we had anticipated. Throughout the trip, she ensured that we were comfortable and well taken care of, always attentive to our needs and happy to answer any questions we had. Her friendly and professional demeanor made her a real pleasure to deal with, and we felt like we were in excellent hands the entire time. Thanks to Helen’s expertise and engaging storytelling, we left with a much deeper appreciation of Kosovo and its heritage. - wun0 contributionsWonderful driver & guideWe did a sightseeing transfer from Sofia to Skopje with Rila Monastery stop on Dec 22. Our driver Igor came on time to pick us and the luggages. He is easy to communicate. He drives within speed limit. We can enjoy the scenic landscape and take many photos along the route. We had one hour stop at Rila Monastery and ample time to see the whole monastery. Igor bring us to a traditional restaurant for lunch. The food is good. He then dropped us safely at the apartment we booked. We had a great experience with Igor. He is always accommodating to our request and smiles all the time. We are happy to have him as our driver. We also booked a full day Best of Skopje with Skopje Daily tours on Dec 23. When we see Igor again as our driver, we happily greeted him. This time he bring a guide Oliver to join us. Oliver speaks perfect English and she is passionate and give us the best of Skopje. She never stop giving us details of history and culture on the sights along the route. We do appreciate her enthusiasm in ensuring we know and understand the sights. After visiting Matka Canyon and St Panteleimon monastery, we wanna get a closer glimpse of the Millenium cross. Igor drove us to a viewpoint. However the cross was covered by clouds and startled to snow. After a traditional lunch, Oliver started walking tour in new and old part of the city. We covered Makedonija Square, Old Bazaar, Stone bridge, Mother Theresa Memorial & end tour in Old Train Station around 5pm. During the walk, we understand deeply on the history and culture that carved Skopje as it is today. Specially thank Oliver for giving us her best.Written 5 January 2025

We greatly appreciate his intellect and knowledge, learning a lot about the geopolitics of the region which we like having an understanding of. Of course we also enjoyed the sight-seeing. We also shared literary interests which made the trip so much more enjoyable. Thanks My Zarko, you really made our day. We highly recommend the tour.Written 25 December 2024

- janadJ9274KW0 contributionsGreat tour to Canyon Matka, Church of St. Panteleimon and Millenium CrossOur tour guide Vladimir (Vlad) was great, told us very interesting information about history and culture of Nothern Macedonia and Skopje. Answered all our questions, while he was also a very good driver, drove safely and carefully. Canyon Matka was amazing, beautiful place to visit, we also saw small, interesting church of St. Panteleimon. Only pity was that we had very small amount of time to enjoy the Millenium Cross. Otherwise, the whole trip was great experience.Written 21 November 2024
- Karen F0 contributionsA wonderful dayDefinitely recommend this tour. Our guide (and guide in training) were knowledgeable, and generous of spirit- answering our questions and sharing their own experiences. We were lucky to have a beautiful sunny day in the off-season. The visit to the archeological site was very interesting, and we both appreciated the winery lunch/tasting. The food was traditional and delicious and each course had a wine pairing.Written 19 November 2024

Initially I wanted to do this trip on my own without booking a tour. After finding out that taking a bus can be quite tricky (low frequency, unreliable timing, tickets not available at the driver etc.), I decided to book this tour instead. I didn't regret it. We were picked up on time, taken to the canyon, got some information about the valley and then dropped of in the city centre later. Initially I was a little worried whether the time would be long enough, but we ended up having more time than needed. We did the boat trip to the cave, which took more or less an hour and had a drink at the restaurant at lake afterwards. If you want to do the kayaking, I guess it could get a little tight.

This was really fantastic and really exceeded my expectations. You meet your tour guide at the fortress - we were the only two people on the tour, and he was incredible. He took us 30 minutes to the canyon, he showed us a restaurant and took us through all of the history on the tour. We sat and had a coffee.
Our tour guide (so sorry I have forgotten his name, but he looked cool, had his left ear pierced and had children),asked us if we wanted to do the boat tour - which we did, it was around £5, for an hour - how good is that! The pictures we took within the canyon were incredible, we were shown the caves, walked through to see them under the water.
Our tour guide then took us back to the city, and any questions we had asked in relation to the history, he had a great answer for them. It really opens your eyes to the life of Macedonia, and we had learnt so much in a short space of 4 hours.
Really really recommended, don’t forget to tip your tour guides!

After meeting up in the Skopje Fortress car park, the tour guide took us (a small group of 5) in a minibus towards Matka Canyon and began sharing his knowledge with us. The tour guide is clearly very knowledgeable, but I definitely sensed a hint of bias in what we were being told and I'm not sure I 100% agree with everything, but it was otherwise very informative and interesting, even if it felt anti-Greek at one point.
Once we arrived at Matka Canyon, there was a short walk up to the actual Canyon itself where we learnt about some more history. There is a 15/20 minute boat ride (that you have to pay for separately, 500 MKD) which will take you to the cave. You climb up to the cave entrance, you descend into the cave and... well, it's not really that impressive at all to be honest. Another 15/20 minutes on the boat back to the start where we met back up with the guide.
From there we drove a short distance up to a small, old monastery with some old stones that had been reused over thousands of years (if you believe their history) before we drove back to Skopje. All in all it took about 3-4 hours.
The guide would ordinarily drop people off at Porta Macedonia but there are some protests nearby currently and the road is closed off so he diverted around and dropped people off by the Stone Bridge Hotel (as it was agreed as convenient for them). Big plus for the driver though as I was staying in a completely different part of town and have a really bad knee so he offered to drive me close-by to my destination as it wasn't far off his route so thank you for that, it was really appreciated!

The driver guide was knowledgeable about Macedonia, but we were disappointed to not have any free time at the canyon after our boat tour. The boat tour to the caves was beautiful, but we left directly to spend an hour at the monastery. We assumed from the tour description that we would have an hour to hike or enjoy the views from the restaurant.

The tour consisted of driving an hour from Skopje to the parking lot at the canyon in a minivan. Then we walked a short distance past the hydroelectric power station to a non-working church located on the shore of the reservoir, next to a boat pier. Along the way, guide Elena told interesting facts, we had a pleasant conversation. This was the end of the tour program. For an additional fee of 8.5 euros, you can take a boat to the Vrelo cave (about an hour there and back, including a visit to a small cave), and you can also take a free walk along the shore of the reservoir along an equipped trail. There is a cafe and unobtrusive trade in souvenirs, water and food. Quite a lot of people, but overall tolerable.

This was a really nice experience, and the guide was excellent!
We went there outside the season, so of course there wasn’t as many options as usual. But we could go on a boat trip to the cave, and enjoy the area. There was almost no other people here, so the upside of going at this time of year, is that it’s quiet and peaceful.

Our trip with Vladimir was wonderful. We had our very own private tour as there was just the two of us with Vladimir. He told us lots of interesting facts about Skopje, Matka Canyon and Macedonia overall. He was able to answer all of our questions and it was delightful to converse with him about general things, and he showed interest in our country as well. We would highly recommend this tour, as he gave us many excellent suggestions and you got a couple of hours to wander around Matka canyon, about 2.5 hours was plenty to have a boat tour, explore the cave, go for a little hike, have a drink/some food and even do a short kayak trip if you wanted. Being just the two of us exploring we had ample time.

Alex was a fantastic guide! He picked us up right on time and was warm and welcoming. His knowledge of Skopje was incredible. Matka Canyon is a gem in Skopje. Once we arrive, he gave us a brief tour of what was around then allowed us the freedom to chose what we wanted while he waited for us. We loved walking the trails. Alex made sure that we were always comfortable and relaxed and answered any questions we had. He was always going above and beyond. I can't recommend this tour enough! Be sure to book with him. :)

The organizers take you from the pick up pint and drive you up to the Matka canion. I am sure you can get there alone, but the fee for a transportation and a nice conversation is worth it. The Tourguide Vlad was very kind and we had nice conversations. The canion itself was very pretty, boat trip was funny because the staff entertained us a lot. There is a coffe house and toilet up the canion so no necessity to take food. After the boat trip (extra fee) Vlad drove us back to the city. For sure a must point to see when you are in Skopje.

Together with a small group of a total of five people, the excursion to the Matka canyon was very pleasant and interesting. A well-read and very knowledgeable guide adapted the content and activities in a smooth way based on different wishes. A nice and interesting nature experience near Skopje.
