About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- gordonwU7386TK0 contributionsExcellent tourExtremely engaging and knowledgeable guide. Very Informative and interesting tour despite the perishingly cold weather. Highly recommended for anyone who likes history (with amusing and surprising anecdotes). Thank you so much, Stefan.Written 17 January 2025
- 816mattstar0 contributionsMust do experience! (so much fun!)Vasil met us on a freezing new years eve 4pm walking tour & was fantastic! He was both personable with everyone in our group, handled the NYE music & events chaos with grace, & showed his expertise & passion at every stop. He welcomed questions, asked for our input to the tour plan, & we now understand so much about the capital, people & country. We had locals & nationals, Japanese, Germans, Chinese & Aussies in our group which made it a lot of fun. Vasil loves what he does as we learnt so much, got all perspectives & enjoyed ourselves. An amazing experience! 🙂Written 1 January 2025
- Londoner58690 contributionsFascinating Insight into Sofia’s Communist PastThis walking tour was an eye-opening experience and an absolute must for anyone interested in history. Sofia is full of monuments and landmarks from Bulgaria’s communist era, but this tour went far beyond the obvious sites. The guide took us to some hidden spots that I’d never have found on my own, and every location came with fascinating stories and insights that brought the history to life. What made this tour so special was the guide’s in-depth knowledge and passion for the subject. He shared not only the historical facts but also personal anecdotes and vivid descriptions of what daily life was like under Bulgaria’s communist government from his own family’s experiences and stories. It added a level of understanding you just can’t get by sightseeing on your own. Exploring on foot made the experience even better and you also get a tour of Sofia city centre. We ventured into areas that larger tours or vehicles can’t access, which gave us a more intimate view of the city. It felt like we were uncovering a side of Sofia that may be only available to locals. Whether you’re a history enthusiast or just curious about the era, this tour offers a fantastic balance of famous landmarks and hidden gems, all delivered with insight and care. I highly recommend it for anyone visiting Sofia!Written 28 December 2024
- 631inbalk0 contributionsGreat JEWISH tour in SofiaGreat JEWISH tour with Vasil! It was so interesting and very clear English. It looks that there is a lot of JEWISH history in Sofia. Thank you Vasil!Written 20 December 2024
- CHSurrey0 contributionsExcellent fun and informativeTommy our guide was excellent Very informative Took us to places we wouldn't have seen otherwise Made it interactive and answered questions with good level but not too much detail Definitely worth going on Free and you give a tip at the endWritten 16 December 2024

- 158kristinz0 contributionsInsight into Sofia’s complex history during CommunismFascinating tour of Sofia during communist era and Bulgaria’s reckoning with its complex history since then. Extremely knowledgeable guide, and excellent tour. Also it was great to have a mid-way break to get warm for 15 minutes as it was very cold out. As a note, quite a lot of talking per stop, could’ve had a few more stops with explanations at each.Written 18 November 2024
- rw5220 contributionsGood but LongThis is an interesting tour. The guide provided a lot of information and answered many questions from the group. However, the tour is looooooooooong at three hours, ending in the dark. I had done another walking tour that day plus walked around on my own so I was already tired when this one started. Even if that had not been the case, I think three hours is still too much for most people. I suggest cutting back some of the information and time, 2 1/2 hours maximum. I would also suggest the guide come with change because many tourists might not have exact change for payment.Written 12 November 2024
- Effie5490 contributionsExcellent tourReally excellent tour, fascinating insights and great for getting bearings of city also. Good value for money, well worth it.Written 5 November 2024
- howards500 contributionsGreat Tours by Passionate guidesI did three walking tours with this group: the Sofia Tour, the Jewish Tour and the Communist Tour. The free Sofia walking tour was approximately two hours and was a good overview tour and was entertaining. The Communist Tour is three hours and is more somber, but gives you a feel for what life was like under the Communists. The Jewish Tour was approximately two hours and talks about the history of Jews in Bulgaria and how Bulgaria saved its Jews from the Nazi death camps in WWII even though they were allied with Germany. They are quite proud of this fact and they should be. The guides are knowledgeable and seem to enjoy sharing their city with you. While there is no up front charge for the Sofia and Jewish Tour, they do ask for tips if you like the tours. There is a charge for the Communist Tour. You should be aware that the tours do not end where they start, but the guides can point you in the direction you need to go. Sofia is relatively compact and walkable and I did not have a problem finding my way back.Written 3 November 2024
- federicomO7680OF0 contributionsFree walking tour/Great tour with Yoan, best guide ever! Our tour guide Yoan was exceptional. Very charismatic and knowledgeable, his energy and passion has very positively impressed me and my friends. He has some great jokes and irony, but can also deeply move you talking about the story of Bulgarian Jews. We also met him again in the pub crawl, and also there, you can see how nice and entertaining guy he can be. You can clearly see he love his job,and he is really the best tour guide I have ever met! Really, really, really recommend!Written 3 November 2024
- zozitufnell0 contributionsFantastic - don't hesitate, go on it!I went on the free walking tour of Sofia, which was two hours easy walking round the main central area. It was such an interesting and informative tour, it really was a highlight of my stay. We learned all about Sofia's amazing history and saw all the main sights of Sofia. The guides were incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, helpful, and were genuinely enthusiastic about their city, no matter how many times they must have said the same things. You could ask anything and they knew it and were very helpful with suggestions of what else to do. It really was a highlight of my stay. They do ask for money at the end, it's optional, but most people give them something towards the running of their organisation. If you don't, it's fine, they don't make you feel bad, they are a really great bunch of people.Written 29 October 2024

- xt20160 contributionsExcellent tour by DinoI joined the 7 October 11am Free Sofia Tour upon first day of arrival in Sofia. They actually stood by 3 guides to cater for the large crowd. Their thoughtfulness was heartfelt. We were nicely broken into 3 smaller groups, each about 20 pax. It was a great way to know the various landmarks of the city. Our guide Dino was exceptional: solid, eloquent, well-paced, and most importantly no unnecessary jokes (as encountered so often in similar tours). Thank you Dino!Written 7 October 2024

The free Sofia walking tour was amazing. Our guide Lazar was extremely knowledgable and his amusing way of story telling managed to keep the attention of the whole group till the end. I will highly recommend this experience to even native Bulgarians like me, as we definitely have a lot to learn from the tour!

Dessi was amazing!! She shared a lot of information about the history of the city with humor and it was a really great to experience someone enjoying the city this much.
She also recommended a lot of places to go and visit and provide us with bits of anecdotes that made the 2 hour tour feels too short.
I definetly recommend her and the tour!

We are 3 friends visiting Bulgaria for the first time and booked the private 2hr tour. The tour was excellent value and our guide was Nikola.
We were all so impressed with Nikola who was everything you would wish for in a tour guide … professional, engaging, deeply knowledgeable and someone who is clearly passionate about the city he lives in.
In 2 hours Nikola was able to give us a fascinating introduction to Bulgarian history and culture which helped us to appreciate how Sofia has evolved to become the city as it is today … all done at a leisurely stroll in the glorious sunshine … a perfect way to start off a trip to Sofia.

The walking tour was an excellent way to get an overview of the places we might loke to revisit and spend more time and also to gain a better understanding of the history of Sofia. Our guide Mitko was passionate about his city and has a great style that keeps you engaged and wanting to know more. I would highly recommend the tour.

With this tour just being a case of turning up at either 11am, 2pm or 6pm I was a little concerned that it either wouldn't be happening as it's a Thursday or we would be the only ones there. We shouldn't have worried as Martin was there as described and by the departure time there was about 12 of us, a good group size. With four or so nationalities there (although all could speak English) Martin welcomed all in their native tongue which was a nice touch.
The tour took us around the city taking in all the major sites with historical background from Martin and all questions answered.
In short no better way to see the city.

Dimitar was amazing! After a few hours, you feel like you've made a friend for life. No matter the weather, he makes the experience amazing. He interacts with the group, speaks all the languages in the world (or at least, it feels like it) and answers all our questions. He recommended a restaurant that served us one of the BEST meals of our entire lives.
You should definitely follow him around Sofia!

The way he tells all history about the city and places get totally your attention to it. Very rich in information and very surprising. We were around 16 in the group. People form all over traveling. Guru Free Walking Tour with 365 Association. Our guide today was Kris. He has been guiding for eight years. Kris did a nice job today keeping the group together and speaking loud enough for all to hear. Gave us history of this region from first written record to present. Visited the following: Catedral de Sveta-Nedelya,
Statue of Sophia, Fountain and public bath house, Mineral waters. People come to fill bottles, Lenin Square in front of the large Communist Party Building. Now
Independence Square, Map and directory down in subway for Roman structures in Sophia, President of Bulgaria’s office, St George’s Rotunda Church inside the square of the President’s Office, and a hotel. TA-PP. From the 4th century with medieval, Ivan Vazov National Theater opened in 1907, Yellow brick road laid in 1911 in front of the National Art Building. and 27 walls, in Sofia, have poems painted on them. Represent one poem from each of the 27 member countries in the European Union.
