About
This is a very unique version of the Classic Salkantay Trek. The first two days follow one of the common Salkantay trails, but on the 3rd day we depart the Salkantay trails to enjoy a less trodden path that connects with the Inca Trail. You even get the opportunity to walk a portion of the Inca Trail on the 3rd day.
The Salkantay Trek is named for Mount Salkantay (20,574 feet). This Mountain is higher than any mountain in North America. On the Salkantay trek you will see gorgeous blue lakes, stunning glaciers and rain forest. The last portion of this particular trek has the ecosystem more typical of the Inca Trail with lush green vegetation and inca ruins. This trek is a great blend of the two very popular hikes, with an incomparable variety of flora and fauna.
The trek includes 2 nights of camping and 1 night in a B&B in Aguas Calientes.

- anthonybI3836JR0 contributionsOnce in a lifetimeA trip of a lifetime. Edgar Mora was so friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. He allowed us to take breaks when needed and pushed us to complete the hike. After a long day of travel, we spent hours at Macchupicu. He took his time walking us around, teaching us about the structures and history and was our personal photographer at the same time. I couldn’t recommend this company and Edgar enough!Written 20 March 2025

- B6793UXdanh0 contributionsShort Inca Trail Alternative with kidsWe originally had the Short Inca Trail booked but the trail was closed unexpectedly due to landslides just 3 days before we left. The company was able to offer us great alternatives so we still got to hike and see Machu Picchu on schedule. Our guide, Christian, was very flexible with our young son during the 6 mile hike and was extremely knowledgeable of both the Incan civilization and local vegetation. The transportation was punctual, the accommodations were adequate, and the experience was unforgettable. Highly recommend this tour.Written 19 March 2025
- G5522NJmaggier0 contributionsShort Inca TrailWe had originally booked the 2day/1night short Inca trail, unfortunately the Inca trail was closed so we hiked an alternative route offered, Huchuy Qosqo. Our tour guide Lino, met us at our hostel the night before to debrief us on the two day excursion and answered all of our questions so we felt prepared :) Lino was helpful, knowledgeable and had great English! Our hotel and dinner provided was superb, definitely above our expectations. The tour was organized, prompt and we didn’t have to worry about a thing. Roxner was also great at communicating via email pre-hike. I would highly recommend doing this tour for Machu Picchu, as the preparation for buses/trains/tickets and circuit options can all be very overwhelming (especially for someone who does not speak Spanish). Thanks for everything Lino, cheers! Maggie & LydiaWritten 19 March 2025
- Jeff S0 contributionsAction Perú Treks provides a fantastic tripWe went on the 2 day, 1 night trek to Huchuy Qosqo/Machu Picchu. In February the Inca Trail is closed but this trail is great and very private. Day 1 it rained but the trek was fun and beautiful. We walked to 13,200 ft so make sure you are altitude prepared. The scenery is beautiful and the Inca settlement is amazing. Our guide Christian was knowledgeable, helpful, a lot of fun and spoke perfect English. A train ride to Aquas Caliente where we had dinner at an upscale restaurant, shopping at the market and then to our very nice hotel with comfortable beds finished day 1. Day 2 started with a hotel breakfast and a morning bus ride to Machu Picchu. It is breath taking. Christian led us through the maze of walkways, stopping to explain the Inca culture, history, agriculture and construction. The Inca were amazing. Christian was a fantastic guide with a wealth of knowledge and Roxner was very great to easily communicate the pre-trek questions and coordination. We highly recommend Action Peru Treks.Written 1 March 2025
- michaelmN2120DF0 contributionsAmazing, Once in a Lifetime Experience! We had such a great time and experience. The trail was challenging but our guides were patient and helpful. They made the experience possible and way more enjoyable. Christian, our guide is highly recommended! I really felt like he made an effort to get to know us and have fun. We laughed together and learned about each other. He was checking on us to make sure we were okay and he was knowledgeable about everything we asked. He gave us recommendations of things to see in Lima as well. I would love to go with him again because he was really THAT good.Written 22 December 2024
- Marvmexico0 contributionsBest machupicchu trek companyWe had an amazing Inca trek with Action Peru. They were so well organised, every aspect of the trip was way above our expectations. The sherpas were just amazing, they looked after our every need. The food was magnificent. I cannot fathom how the chef managed to produce such high quality meals when everything had to be carried to the site. Our guide Nilton was so informative and his knowledge and enthusiasm was entirely infectious. The high point for us was the visit to Machu Picchu, Nilton took us through the entire history of the site. It was fascinating. I highly recommend this company. The fact that they are a local company means that the money they earn stays in Peru, and the company itself makes sure that they share this revenue with the local communities.Written 17 December 2024
- DanDanWangMan0 contributionsUnforgettable Machu Picchu Adventure with Action Peru TreksUnforgettable Machu Picchu Adventure with Action Peru Treks Our experience with Action Peru Treks was nothing short of epic! From the moment we started, it was clear this company is dedicated to delivering an exceptional journey. A special thanks to our incredible guide, Lino, who went above and beyond to make this trip one to remember. His patience, kindness, and knowledge of Inca history was unmatched, and his storytelling truly brought the ancient sites to life. He made every step of the adventure both fun and educational. The food was another highlight—fresh, diverse, and delicious! It’s amazing how the team managed to prepare such gourmet-quality dishes on the trail. Every meal felt like a celebration, fueling us perfectly for the journey ahead. We also have to recognize the legendary porters who carried heavy loads with unmatched grace and dedication. Their effort and teamwork were inspiring—they truly made the trek possible for everyone. Their warmth and encouragement were just as important as their hard work. They even applauded us upon arrival at each camp! If you’re considering a trip to Machu Picchu, don’t think twice—choose Action Peru Trecks. With their organization, the amazing meals, Lino’s guidance, and the superhuman porters, this was an adventure we’ll never forget! It’s also one of the only companies that supports the locals - I even donated a few bits and pieces to the local kindergarten they work with.Written 20 November 2024
- Dave B0 contributionsAbsolutely fantastic trek to MP!We booked our trek in April. It was the private 2D&1N short inca trail. From the outset, Roxner of APT was fantastic with excellent communication throughout. We had a pre-brief the evening before trek with our guide Lino, who deserves a special mention. During the entire trek and the 2nd day visit to MP, he was extremely attentive towards us and showed a real passion for the subject of inkan history. In our trek was all transfers (bus and train), hotel and evening meal in AC during the night, entrance to MP on day 2 ( you get to descend into MP on day 1 around 2pm and revisit MP on day 2). Definitely not for the faint hearted but so worth the trek when you crest at the sungate, it makes all the climbing worthwhile. I can highly recommend APT - you will not be disappointed! These guys help you make memories.Written 29 October 2024
- tsw95_0 contributionsSomething you will never, ever forget!I recently completed the Short Inca Trail (2D/1N) with my partner whilst visiting Peru. We pre booked our experience with Action Trek Peru prior to visiting, and that decision was one we will never regret. Action Trek Peru were really helpful at clearly communicating the requirements for the trip and organising all necessary elements including hotel transfer, bus travel, rail travel and national park entry tickets. This also meant we avoided many hours of queuing to arrange this when arriving! Our tour guide, Nilton, was absolutely fantastic during our two day trip. On Day 1, Nilton picked us up from our hotel and guided us from Cusco all the way through to arriving by rail at KM104 to begin our hike. Over the 12km hike, Nilton was thoroughly engaging, motivating and funny. His style of providing excellent information on the places we visiting coupled with his excellent and humourous conversation made the whole hike a pleasure (even if at times the elevation gain and stair, after stair, after stair were a challenge!). Reaching the Sun Gate genuinely felt a real success! In the evening Nilton came out for dinner with us where we shared a lovely meal and spoke more about our amazing day, and the history of Machu Pichhu and Aguas Calientes. On Day 2, Nilton gave us a fantastic and information in depth tour of the site itself, the scenery, information and sheer scale of the site is something to behold. Whilst visiting it alone would be something to remember, with a tour guide from Action Trek Peru (especially Nilton!) your experience is so much more, we will never forget some of the stories shared and memories made. Thank you Action Trek Peru and Nilton for such a fantastic experience, we will never forget it and could not recommend visiting Peru and Machu Picchu enough!Written 17 October 2024
- sarahsK5280RJ0 contributionsThe best way to experience Machu PicchuWhat an experience! Everything was seamless when booking our trip, Action Trek Peru organise everything for you and look after you well. Pick up was easy and on time, very easy to send bags to hotel, everything included that you need. The hike was difficult at times but so rewarding and the scenery stunning, a special shout out to our guide Nilton who shared details about each Incan site we came across, different plants we saw along the way and many interesting facts about the Quechua culture. He was friendly, encouraging and funny and made the trip very enjoyable. Reaching the Sun Gate was so rewarding and such a special way to see your first view of Machu Picchu before the guided tour on day 2. Again Nilton was very knowledgeable and delivered the tour in an interesting way that did not feel manufactured. Do not hesitate to book this experience! :) Thank you Nilton and Action Treks Peru.Written 17 October 2024
- garethb7440 contributionsDid not disappoint- an amazing experience. What an amazing trip- I would thoroughly recommend it. Roxner's organisation of the group of 12 was faultless (and endlessly patient) and our guides Christian and Eddie were knowledgeable, fun and kept us going with the same level of patience. The porters made the trek so much easier and we still never really worked out how the team of chefs managed to keep us so well fed, often the middle of nowhere with no obvious cooking facilities. The trek is not a walk in the park, but as a reasonably active person approaching 50 from the wrong direction it was definitely achievable. The scenery varies between the high mountains and humid subtropical jungle in a matter of hours. Christian and Eddie ensured that the group stayed together without holding anyone back. Mules are on hand for the most challenging parts such as either side of the Salkantay Pass for anyone who is really struggling. Machu Picchu didn't disappoint, with Action Peru ensuring we had early tickets to avoid the huge crowds you see on YouTube. The group split into two at MP, with Eddie being an excellent guide for my group and explaining the significance of the buildings and the site from his perspective as part of the Quechua people.Written 8 October 2024
- sarafG7318OH0 contributionsAmazing experience! We had an exceptional experience! The team was incredibly flexible and helpful with all the arrangements, from managing our luggage to organizing everything with the hotel and restaurants, which made the entire trip stress-free. Our guide, Lino, truly made the difference. His vibrant personality and deep knowledge brought the journey to life, with tailored explanations that added a personal touch throughout. The trail itself was breathtaking, and when we finally arrived at Machu Picchu, Lino skillfully avoided the crowds, creating a peaceful and unique experience. It’s rare to feel so relaxed in such a busy location, and we couldn’t have asked for a better guide. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Cusco and Machu Picchu.Written 4 October 2024

The Inca Trail trip was the most amazing thing I have ever done in my life!! It was tough but so rewarding and has inspired me to do more adventures of this nature now. The complete support from the trekking company to the guide and porters were absolutely excellent. To watch how hard the Porter's work carrying everything from the toilet to pretty much the kitchen equipment! These guys are so inspirational and they are absolutely the best! Our guide Lino was outstanding from start to end, constantly checking up on every hiker of the group, being very knowledgeable of the local history and very warm and welcoming at all times. Try to be in a certain level of fitness before as this will help make the trek easier. Make sure you also bring appropiate clothing for the hot and cold weather along the trek.

An exceptional trek led by Action Peru Treks. The itinerary was well planned and perfectly executed by an experienced team of local guides, porters, chefs and drivers. The tents, mattresses and equipment provided were clean and sufficient. Our guides Christian and Eddy were enthusiastic, very knowledgeable and accommodating, ensuring that everyone is well taken care off even when unable to do a hike. The quality of the meals were way above my expectations and I could tell that the chefs took pride in their work. I can't recommend Action Peru Treks enough!

Action Peru Treks is one of the best trekking companies to Machu Picchu. The company offers experienced guides, quality equipment, and affordable options. My wife and I did the 4-day Salkantay Trek with Action Peru Treks in September 2023. The trek starts in Cusco and ends in Machu Picchu. Along the way, we had the opportunity to see the stunning views of the Andes Mountains, meet the local people, and learn about Peruvian culture.
Our guides, Pedro and Carlos, were very experienced and knowledgeable. They gave us all the information we needed throughout the hike and helped us with any problems we had. Our equipment was also very good and provided us with all the support we needed for the hike. The trek was challenging but also very rewarding. We had a lot of fun throughout the hike and will never forget the feeling we had when we arrived in Machu Picchu.
I highly recommend Action Peru Treks. If you are going to Peru and want to do a trek to Machu Picchu, this company is a perfect choice.

Traveling to and through unknown country can be stressful and intimidating, especially with kids, but Action Treks Peru made our trip easy and stress free. I cannot recommend them highly enough. We spent five days traveling with our guides and all of the logistics were handled beautifully. The vans, buses and trains were spotless and well maintained and the drivers professional, patient, safe and right on time. We had a conflict with our original briefing and Roxnar adjusted the schedule to fit ours.
The structure of our trip was better planned and executed than many others about which I’ve heard and read. Everyone involved with Action Treks is very knowledgeable, kind, and exceptional at explaining what to expect, which is very helpful when undertaking big challenges with kids. The porters and cooks were fantastic and fun. We played frisbee and football with them as we met them, by name, and gave them small gifts for their kids. It was a great moment in life.
Our guides, Christian, Miguel and Hans, made our journey. Each of them are fun, funny, kind and caring. Listening to Christian’s lessons all along the journey was really wonderful. He is a mix of the best history professor and most interesting story teller. They were patient and attentive. We had nine kids on our trek and they never seemed frustrated or stressed.
Put your trust and faith in Action Treks Peru and you won’t be disappointed!

Breathtaking in every sense of the word! This was the best trip we’ve done in South America! The tour groups are small of up to 6 people (ours had 2 couples), which means you bond with the guides and other hikers. We had Lino as our guide who had 20 years of experience hiking Salkantay and had lots of wisdom to share with us, including the best places to spot wildlife, teaching us about the plant life and the history of the trails. The first day was tough, but Lino helped us pace ourselves and had lots of breaks, so the trek was adaptable to different levels, but be prepared to be out of breath!
At the end of the second day, we went to a local hot spring to recover, which was recommended by Lino as it was quieter than the hot springs in Aguas Calientes.
Lino stayed with us the whole time, and also guided us through Machu Picchu sharing so much interesting historical information with such passion. You can tell he loves this job.
My advice for people doing this trek is to get to know your guide. We did, and it really made our trip special. We got to learn about our guides family, education, and sense of humour, which meant we shared laughter for the entirety of the trip.
Would 100% do this again. Miss you already Lino!

Action Peru were brilliant- can’t rate them highly enough. Our guide Vallerio was fantastic, so friendly, encouraging, a fount of knowledge and generally excellent company. Patricio our chef was an absolute genius, whipping up cakes and soups and steak and bespoke vegetarian options for me in crazy conditions. We were advised to choose this trail because of the closure of the Inca trail and the general wet weather at this time of year and it was absolutely stunning. We also had the whole route to ourselves which was rather amazing. It was very wet one day but we also had some incredible clear views of the mountains on another so we felt very lucky. Quite a spectacular experience climbing up to 5200m in the snow then hiking down through all the different mountain climates ending up in the semi tropical cloud forest below!
