Day 1: Quilotoa Laguna

Stop At: Laguna Quilotoa, Laguna de Quilotoa, 070701 Ecuador
Day 1
Quitlotoa laguna
In the countryside of Latacunga city, in the Cotopaxi province. We can find the crystal green lagoon of Quilotoa with its ring-shaped. Separating from the Panamericana High way, the road is curving at the beginning to get to the Paramo Andino. One side to the other the beautiful patchworks of potatoes, onions, barley, and other crops are appearing; some sheep, llamas, and alcapas peacefully sooner come.

A long the way to the lagoon, some villages, small towns, of Kichua people are offering ancient art painting from Julio Toaquiza and his generation; in Tigua, wooden mask too. In Zumbahua a nice market will occur every Saturday, where the vendors are coming from mountains to the main plaza. Guinea pig, groceries, local products and fruits from the coastal region are easy to find.

Its last activity of Quilotoa crater lake was happening proximally 800 years ago, causing a large pyroclastic flows of pumice stone and fall ash deposits. All of this volcanic material was threw out to the north part of the Cordillera of the Andes, therefore permitting the migration of the native people.

In the Illinizas Ecological Reserve, we find the Quilotoa lagoon, with an average diameter of three kilometers and a depth of 270 meters, its green color is due to the minerals it has and the reflection of the sky, it also becomes turquoise when the Low temperature during the night.
