Greet your professional photographer guide and small group at Beihai North subway station at 9am for the short walk to Beihai Park.
While the temples and pavilions are striking, the real draw here are the many and varied activities local residents enjoy. Watch locals take part in everything from tai chi and Chinese theater to ballroom dancing, choir, and aerobics: your guide will help you bridge the gap between visitor and local, and meet some fascinating people.
Your next stop is the hutong, the low-rise alley neighborhoods, some of which still have traditional courtyard houses. Inhale the steam from outdoor food stalls as you watch street barbers and tailors at work, and old folk on bicycles going about their daily lives.
Finally, you'll travel to Shijia Hutong Museum, the first hutong museum. Gain even more insight into local life as you learn how the hutong developed over time. Your tour will finish here at 12pm.
Traveling with children? We offer an optional treasure hunt that guides them around Beihai Park and the hutong, interacting with local residents along the way.
