This is an eye opening tour with incredibly resilient and impressive guides. I felt very safe the entire time and was grateful to be able to see parts of Nairobi I would not feel comfortable to walk around alone. I really enjoyed Priest's company and appreciated his willingness to share his story with me.

Highly recommend this tour. It is a true look behind the curtain at what life is like for these kids. I was amazed we each in the group had our own guide sharing their person story while walking through their neighbourhoods, experiencing their culture and taking a look at what they have done to change their lives and inspire others who are facing the same fate.

We had a wonderful tour from Typhoon, Cheddar, Tsunami, Priest, Donga and others. They showed us the parts of downtown nairobi we would not have otherwise been able to see. And they kindly shared their own personal tales of survivorship on the streets, and what they are doing now to help other young people in that position. They were so friendly, and looked after us exceptionally well, we felt completely safe the whole time. We each had our own guide as well to explain things as we walked. They all have truly inspiring stories and are doing amazing things with their new lives as tour guides. Thank you so much

My husband and I took our 3 college aged kids on this tour on 12/30/22 and it was fantastic. You would never see this side of Nairobi without a tour like this (and I believe this is the only one of its type in Nairobi). The area is not one a typical tourist would ever roam around in without a specific purpose.
Most impactful was meeting these guys and hearing their personal stories. As I mentioned, we were a party of 5. Also as part of our tour was a 20-something couple from Italy and a couple of early 30's guys looking to party.
Almost immediately the guides broke us into groups and from that point forward we had an essentially private tour. Kudos to the guides, very savvy of them, the groups the broke us into were well matched to the personalities of the guides. Example: my son and I are more quiet and introspective and the guide we got (Tsunami) was very friendly in a low key, quiet assurance kind of way. I am pretty sure he knows everyone in the neighborhood because he (and consequently, we) fist bumped every other person we passed, big smiles all around. My husband, daughter, and other son were matched with Typhoon, who is a much more outwardly extroverted guy, very charismatic. They didn't have nearly the volume of fist-bump greetings that we did, but it was very clear everyone knew him and respected him greatly. He was a better match for my husband/daughter/son because they are all more extroverted in general and also my daughter is very pretty and very blonde, which attracted a lot of unexpected attention. She appreciated Tycoon's ability to ensure she felt perfectly safe the entire time.
Because we had different guides, we literally had completely different tours, seeing similar but different areas and hearing the guides' personal stories. Their stories are truly heartbreaking and the resilience shown by these men in surviving and thriving in these terrible circumstances is one of the most inspiring experiences my sons have ever had in their lives. (Tsunami, your remarks to my son about how important education is and how incredibly blessed he is to have access to education has got him thinking he should approach his studies more seriously and gratefully--- something I have been unable to do these past 23 years, so thank you.)
Also admirable is their commitment to helping other kids get out of the crushing poverty these kids live through. If you are interested they will help put you in touch with a school so that you can sponsor a child's school fees and help lift them into a better life through education. (If you are not interested in that, they don't push it on you. They mention it once, then move along).
The guides themselves are funny, fascinating, and their English is very good. They support themselves and their families by leading these tours. Our family felt 100% safe the entire time. Lunch was tasty, local food including food our vegetarian daughter could eat, served in the quiet back area of a small local restaurant. We all felt fine after lunch and it cost us appx $5 each for a table full of food and drinks. Wear flat, comfy walking shoes, I was personally glad I'd opted for my tennis shoes instead of sandals. I suggest you toss on a light jacket and long skirt or pants so you don't get sunburnt and so your attire fits in with the rest of the people in the neighborhood.
In short, if you have 3 hours to spare, I recommend this tour very, very highly. We travel a LOT...and by that I mean really a LOTTTTTT (as example - 10 days prior to this tour I was in Buenos Aires and Antarctica. In a few weeks I leave again for the Caribbean, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam). We book private tours in nearly every city and have for years. But only once before in my life have I experienced a tour that hit me with realness like this; its a very raw experience, being there and hearing the real-life experiences. At the same time you find yourself enjoying yourself and feeling like you have made an actual new friend.

Walk trough the hectic life of Downtown Nairobi, literally walking trough slums and past many people sleeping in the streets. This area is dangerous to visit without a proper guide due to high criminality rates. As the guides have lived in these streets, they can tell you all ins and outs about how it's like to live there. Pure insight in the life of children living in the streets of downtown. Definitely surpassed my expectations. Big thank you to our guide who made us feel safe, showed us around, and told impressive stories about his life in these streets. Highly recommend when in Nairobi!

My girlfriend and I really enjoyed this tour. Our guide Tsunami showed us around and told us all about his experience growing up on the streets of Nairobi. Would definitely recommend this to everyone who wants to get away from the more typical “tourist” excursions!

The tour for our family of four was unforgettable. The engaging guides are able to navigate parts of Nairobi that we would be otherwise unlikely to see. At the same time, they shared their frank , extraordinary and heartbreaking life stories as children on the streets of Nairoibi, They now also working with some incredible outreach programmes giving other street children educational and funding opportunities. Have a look at rootsinstitutecentre.com for some of their work.

A heartfelt and honest narrative and tour from a wonderful young man who is working his hardest to change the circumstances of his own life and so many around him. I felt informed, safe and privileged to be let into this world.

Hi! You mentioned not to take a camera because photography isn't allowed in the city. Can you please provide more details? Is this certain parts of the city or the entire city. Can pictures be taken with cell phone?

They say not to take a camera on the tour. I took my cell phone and would ask before taking a pic. Some places it was not allowed and some places it was fine. The guides can let you know. I took many pics, but only after checking with the guide first.

Possible to have a pickup and dropoff at the Tamarind Hotel? Also to have a private (just me) tour? I would like to take photographs and don't want to be a burden on others. What would be the cost? Do the guides provide some insight into history and culture, in addition to life on the street? Thanks.

We were just two of us, but it was due to limited tourists at that time, however i’m sure they can arrange it. Contact them directly.they are very responsive as their business is based on internet communication
It also depends how many of them will participate. We enjoyed the variety of their personal stories, each of them has something special to share. Related to history and culture these guys have grown up on the streets so they can share their stories and what they learned, do not except trained guides, but this is the beauty of this tour.
