- gustavow8880 contributionsA Family Visit to Mtskheta: A Journey into Georgia's Spiritual HeartOur family visit to Mtskheta, the ancient capital of Georgia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was nothing short of magical. Nestled at the confluence of the Mtkvari and Aragvi Rivers, Mtskheta is not just a city but a portal to the rich history, spirituality, and culture of Georgia. Here's a glimpse into our unforgettable experience. The Serenity of Svetitskhoveli Cathedral Our first stop was the iconic Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, one of the most sacred sites in Georgia. The grandeur of its stone walls, combined with the intricate carvings and frescoes inside, left us awe-struck. Walking through the cathedral, we learned about its legend as the burial site of Christ’s robe. The spiritual atmosphere was profound, and we spent a moment of quiet reflection as a family. The courtyard offered stunning views of the surrounding landscape, and we enjoyed taking photos with the cathedral as a backdrop. The local guides were knowledgeable, sharing stories that brought the history of Svetitskhoveli to life. Climbing to Jvari Monastery Next, we headed to the Jvari Monastery, perched high on a hill overlooking Mtskheta. The drive up was scenic, and the view from the top was breathtaking. Seeing the rivers merge below and the town of Mtskheta spread out in the valley was a moment of pure wonder. The monastery itself, a masterpiece of early medieval architecture, was simple yet profound in its beauty. We took our time exploring the grounds and capturing family photos with the panoramic views. The cool breeze and serene surroundings made it a perfect spot for a quiet moment together. Strolling Through the Old Town The cobblestone streets of Mtskheta’s Old Town were delightful to wander through. We explored small shops selling traditional Georgian crafts, souvenirs, and textiles. The kids enjoyed browsing through colorful trinkets, while we admired the artistry of local handicrafts. We also sampled some local snacks, including churchkhela (a Georgian sweet made of nuts and grape juice) and freshly baked bread from roadside vendors. The warmth of the locals added a special charm to the experience. A Taste of Georgian Cuisine Our family meal in a traditional Georgian restaurant was a highlight of the trip. We indulged in dishes like khinkali (dumplings), khachapuri (cheese-filled bread), and lobio (bean stew). The flavors were rich and comforting, and the kids particularly enjoyed trying the unique dishes. Paired with a glass of local Georgian wine for the adults, it was a perfect way to end our day in Mtskheta. Reflections on the Visit Mtskheta is not just a destination but a journey through Georgia's soul. From its sacred sites to its picturesque streets and warm hospitality, every moment in this ancient city felt special. Visiting with my family made it even more meaningful, as we shared moments of awe, learning, and connection. Tips for Families Visiting Mtskheta * Wear Comfortable Shoes: The cobblestone streets and monastery hikes require good footwear. * Bring a Camera: The views from Jvari Monastery and the charm of Old Town are picture-perfect. * Plan for a Meal: Georgian cuisine is a must-try, and Mtskheta has some excellent restaurants. * Hire a Guide: A local guide can enrich your experience with fascinating stories and historical context. Our family’s visit to Mtskheta was a journey we’ll cherish forever. It’s a place where history, spirituality, and natural beauty come together, creating an experience that lingers in your heart long after you leave.Written 3 December 2024
- MargaretK20120 contributionsSo much fun!We really enjoyed our tour! Khatuna is a natural tour guide- she gave us so much additional info in that she answered all of our questions that came up randomly and were not even always related to the exact subject of the tour [brutalism architecture]. She was friendly, helpful and took us to so many cool places that we never would have made it to on our own! I would 100% recommend this tour to anyone visiting Tbilisi and it really was such a unique highlight of my time there. So fun to get off the beaten path and explore things you wouldn't get on the tourist track.Written 20 November 2024
- KarenBonavita0 contributionsWell worth taking this local, small group tour- Recommend!Walking slowly around Tbilisi on this small group tour is the best way to introduce yourself to this amazing city. So glad we took it. And having JONAH as our guide on this tour was the best. Jonah is highly intelligent-impressive, humorous, likable, fun. What a worthwhile and enjoyable 3 hours. He’s a history enthusiast, not only about Georgia and the region, but on international affairs. His knowledge is outstanding and we learned a lot. The way he shares information is very clear, and his English is perfect. He answered all our questions, and we had many. We appreciate our experiences in Georgia even more now. Jonah even recommended a restaurant as our trip ended that turned out to be a wise choice (other than the touristy one we had originally selected). We hope you take this tour and that Jonah is your guide as well. Thank you, Jonah!Written 5 November 2024
- Williec12340 contributionsHidden Gems For Sure!Jonah had me enthralled from the beginning of our tour around Tbilisi. He knew his stuff and told stories with great enthusiasm. - lloyd5550 contributionsOff the tourist trackAn excellent overview of some of Georgia's lesser known but historically important sites, including walking up and through typical Soviet built blocks of flats, the disused Architecture Museum which integrated former city water tanks, high on a hill with great views of the city, the horizontal skyscraper now housing the Bank of Georgia, and ending with the Chronicles of Georgia Monument, again high on another hill and overlooking the big lake/reservoir. All of these were enthusiastically shown and explained in relation to Georgian history and current politics by Alex, our guide who was very knowledgeable and patiently answered all our questions. Highly recommended to everyone who wants an insight into Georgian heritage.Written 8 October 2024

We could not have been happier with taking the decision to book this tour with Alexsi. We were a group of 8, and he was able to accommodate all of us on the private tour, off-roading and all, with his cool off-roader. It was a very well thought out itinerary, and he gave us the options at different destinations to go more hardcore on the hiking or rambling if we wanted to, or to head to the next stop if we were a bit knackered.
The first stop by the lake and the hike up along the rainbow hills was great, it was particularly great because it was quite off the beaten track. He didn't take us to the touristy view points, but to a contact's private land to get a really wild and natural encounter rambling over the hill formations, and some of us still have some of the crystals that he pointed out in certain parts of the rocky hills. We then went across fields and hills to the next spot, and had to carefully navigate through some truly huge herds of sheep that farmers were taking out for a graze. The visit to the first, more secluded, cave monastery was next, and that was also particularly good. It was so fascinating because of the ruins and Soviet-era graffiti inside of it. The second monastery, the David Geraja Udabno monastery is incredibly beautiful and iconic, but we felt lucky to be able to have someone like Alex to show us to that first monastery, which doesn't have a big road or tourist coach trips to take you up there.
The late lunch spot was remarkably good for somewhere so far out and rural, with really nice people working there, good food (even really good salads) and a very welcoming and relaxing vibe, which was well needed after the hiking. The Winery tour was a great end, it wasn't a stiff wine tasting affair but a tour through the huge distillery, and they were very generous with the wine, brandy and chacha they had there (they even offered seconds if we wanted more). Despite the winery catering to tourists with their tours, the winery actually had very good prices for afterwards, which was lucky because we were all a bit tipsy and were looking to get some souvenirs.
Alex had great English (better than he would admit) and shared a really nice depth of explanation of things like the cultures of Georgia, the language, the physical geography, history and even the religious history and theology. When we had more specific questions, he was great at explaining to more depth. He was very real with his explanations, he did not give us an excessively proud narratives; he was clearly sincerely knowledgeable and interested about the topics he was talking about and a critical thinker. We all really enjoyed the tour so much and it was such a fun odyssey for the day, which is saying a lot for a group of 8. Definitely the one if you want a bit of an adventure and don't mind getting your hands dirty.

We originally booked Rainbow Mountains tour with another group but were then advised THIS Off-Road adventure tour is far better - and it definitely was.
Our 5-group tour traveled far into the Painted Mountains in the ‘Friendly.ge Tours’ 4x4 off-road vehicle that other tours do NOT use. The day was brilliant. We also hiked around the Painted Mountains for an hour+ and it was exhilarating. The monasteries were amazing, we met the monk who alone lives in one of them, lunch was superb.
Our guide, Koba, and driver Vepho were the best. Vepho handled that off-road rugged driving all day with ease and was very friendly. Koba was a particularly special guide, informative, fun, patient, and he’s an artist. He actually made skilled, colorful drawings of Old Town for us while driving to the sights in a very bumpy off-road vehicle and while sharing information about Georgia and the sights.
This was a unique way to visit the Painted Mountains and we’re so glad we changed the tour group that made for this fantastic day. Recommend - highly recommend - that you choose Friendly.ge and take this trip!

A beautifully organized tour! The first thing I would like to note is the punctuality of all participants, we were not delayed or late anywhere, we arrived back to the city in the daylight :)
I would like to give a huge plus to the guide and driver - all at the highest class. Guide Koba not only coolly told about all places, but also gave all participants a picture reminder of his own work. The driver drove accurately and quickly, so even steep climbs and off-road were almost not felt.
The direction itself is also interesting - there are almost no tourists in these places, very beautiful views and nature, supported by interesting stories of the guide. After the tour we were taken to a cool restaurant where we had a delicious meal and drove back to Tbilisi.
I highly recommend it! Pictures from the trip are also attached :)

We have just been on this tour and had a wonderful experience. Booking and communication from their office, Ana was excellent.
Our tour guide, Jonah was first class. He has been a tour guide for many years and is a font of knowledge with a passion for all things Georgian. He was also very witty and kept us amused throughout the day. The days tour had a number of highlights, with the off road section and dare I say the wine tasting being memorable.... Jonah also gave us good suggestions for our remaining travels in Georgia.
The off road vehicle was surprisingly very comfortable and the driver very competent. These are small groups with a maximum of six people, so in my view worth paying a little extra for what is almost a private tour.
In summary, highly recommended and we will likely try some of their other tours on our return to Tbilisi.

What a tour. The itinerary was perfect; started with a coffee/breakfast stop, before off-roading, a short hike and then the visits. Lunch and the wine tasting were a great end to this trip. It was rather gloomy during our trip but the colours were still striking. Alex was a great guide who ensured all our questions were answered and our needs met. Also, definitely recommend this as I believe it is the only, or one of the few, that lets you get up close and personal with the mountains.

Dear Alicia,
Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us! We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed the tour, even though the fickle weather added its own charm to the adventure.
We're so glad that Alex was able to make your trip memorable with his attentive guidance and care for every detail. Travelling in a small group allows for a much more personal and immersive experience and we're delighted that he made your trip even more special.
A big shout out also goes to our amazing driver, who ensures that everyone travels comfortably and safely through the off-road terrain. Seeing the Rainbow Mountains up close is a rare treat and we're so glad you were able to experience the magic first hand.

Given that at the moment only the Lavra Monastery was accessible for visitors, the David Gareja site is probably not anymore among the top sights in Georgia.
However, Friendly.ge made the tour more interesting by including another monastery and taking us to a very nice lunch spot and to a wine tasting.
This all took place in a well-maintained 4x4 vehicle, with an experienced driver and a knowledgeable English-speaking guide.

It is a pity that you highly appreciated the tour but at the same time gave 4 stars. We have fully implemented the program according to our itinerary.
We did not promise to show the monasteries, which are on the territory under the control of another country. Even we do not have photos from there on our page like makes other companies. The public part of the David Gareji Monastery is fully open to visitors. Please don't mislead other people.

The best trip we had in Georgia! We really enjoyed the amazing views and wonderful company. It was so great to reach places we would have not seen without 4x4 vehicle. We felt very safe with our driver and guide who showed us Georgia through his perspective. Thank you so much!

It was absolutely amazing, we were able to take our time, have genuine conversations and experience the place. Jonah was also incredibly accommodating when it came to language, and was proactive in helping me with my Russian (which I am currently learning!).
He did a good job in getting to know us individually and what we were each interested in. The wine tasting at the end was a personal highlight because Jonah has got to know us during the day and we were toasting/gathering as friends by the end. That was special. Best toastmaster, guide, historian and language exchange guy = Jonah.
Unforgettable experience and so glad we did it.
I would always book with friendly.ge as a first port of call.

Thank you so much for your heartfelt review, Sasha! We're thrilled to hear that our David Gareji Monastery and Real Rainbow Mountains off-road adventure was one of your best days in Georgia. It sounds like Jonah did a fantastic job as your guide, historian, language exchange partner, and even as toastmaster at the wine tasting - a true embodiment of Georgian hospitality!
We aim to make every adventure, from exploring the stunning Natlismtsemeli Monastery to the breathtaking views of the real Rainbow Mountains, as memorable as possible. We're so glad you felt that personal connection, and we love that by the end of the day it felt like a gathering of friends.
And of course we're looking forward to welcoming you on more friendly.ge adventures in the future 😊.

Best tour I've ever been on. We actually got to walk through the Rainbow Mountains with our awesome guide Alex. No other tour offering "Rainbow Mountains" gets to do that. They just view them from afar. Here you actually get to see them up close. It's fantastic. Then the monastery visits are incredible and the drive itself offroad is pretty fun in itself.
Lunch is such a highlight because you are in this very small village in the middle of the Georgian desert that makes incredible food in this very rustic building with unbelievable character.
I could not recommend this tour enough. It's just worth it. The price to value is second to none. No other tour will give you the experience the friendly.ge team provides you.

Dear Tim,
Thank you so much for your wonderful review and for sharing your experience with us! Your kind words mean the world, especially in these difficult times for tourism and small businesses in Georgia.
We're so glad you enjoyed walking through the Rainbow Mountains - there's nothing like seeing them up close and we agree that photos just can't capture the full beauty of the area. Alex and the team always aim to create unique and memorable experiences and it's great to hear that this tour did just that for you.
The village lunch is a really special part of the day and we're thrilled that you loved the food and the character of the place - it's what makes these adventures so authentic and memorable.
Thank you again for choosing us and for your incredible support. We hope to welcome you back to Georgia for more adventures in the future!
