We did the one-day Mtshketa, Jvari monastery, Uplishkhte, Gori trip with Gamarjoba tours, which is a trip from Tbilisi and back. It lasts for about 10 hours but is so full of interesting history and culture stories that it does not feel that long at all. Our super-cool and amazing guides Miriam and Katherina not only made sure we had all the information but also gave it to us in a fun and interesting manner to not let us get bored. Uplishkhte is a cave city that involves a bit of climbing, so wear comfortable shoes. The views from the top will take your breath away.
The trip does not include the cost of entry to Uplishkhte (15 gel) and Stalin s museum (15 gel). A very warm and cosy lunch with a Georgian family (40 gel) was organised that included traditional Georgian cuisine and some Georgian music and dance which was perfect for the cold windy weather we had. The whole experience was totally worth it and I would recommend doing a guided tour with Gamarjoba to understand history and culture better.
Do carry a scarf and warm jackets as the weather changes suddenly and monastery visit require women to cover their heads as a sign of respect.
The Gamarjoba tour office is a uber cool place with lively music, interesting people to meet, and of course WINE and CHACHA to begin or end your day! The office guys are also extremely helpful and you can contact them anytime for prompt responses to help you with any questions regarding your trip. In the Covid times, they also have an arrangement to get the mandatory 3rd day pcr test at the office which works out conveniently.

Kat is a great guide, she told the historical stories in a really amusing way, with a lot of fun facts! She also answered all of our questions, no matter how random. The highlight of the tour is the performance of traditional georigian dance during lunch - incredible energy! I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone looking for a nice way to spend a day in Georgia, while learning and not getting too tired with planning and organising a trip on their own. Great value for money.

The highlights of this tour are the overlooking view from Uplistsikhe Cave Town and the homemade lunch from a local family. Other than that it was not that special.

First of all, it was hot inside our van! I think there was no cooling and only the fan was working. There was also noise coming from the van making it a bit hard to hear the tour guide.

Gori tour was really boring. Our tour guide gave us an option to either join the Stalin museum tour or get a free time to explore the town for an hour. A few of us chose the latter, but we just ended up sitting in the park as there was nothing to explore except the Fortress of Gori. Our tour guide joined the museum tour instead of guiding us to explore the town. Which I find odd and unfair especially when we found out that the museum have their own in-house tour guide. I feel like we were left out just because we chose not to pay extra for the entrance fee.

Lastly, our tour guide, Catherine, was a huge let down! She could've made this tour enjoyable, but she lacked the energy and was not engaging at all. There were a couple of times when I find her a bit rude not just towards me but to other guests too. I was seated near the window and the sunlight really hot so I had to cover my side with the curtain but she kept on pulling it back to cover herself instead of using the curtain that's close to her. And she did this not just once but 3x while knowing that a guest is seated behind her! It feels like she didn't want to be in this tour at all. It's a shame since one of the main points of a group tour is bringing people from different backgrounds together, but her lack of leadership and sincerity failed to do so.

Hello, I have carefully read your review and can not agree on some things. Starting with AC, we do check minibuses every time to make sure that each car is in good conditions, but still, if your experience was not good enough because of it, we will pay more attention to avoid same situation for the next time. Guide offered you to join museum or spend free time in Gori, you choose the second option and nobody forced to do so, it was your decision and there was nothing to do with that. Catherine, your guide did join the museum, because in-house guides that they have there are not doing the tours as good as our guides, so because of that reason, our guides do the tour inside Stalin museum all the time. You had to know that there is not much to see in Gori. That's why it's important to know itinerary to have right expectations. In general, Catherine is very entertaining, knowledgeable and energetic guide, and I don't know how you felt this way with her. It's very unfortunate that you did not enjoy the day with her. Hope your experience in our country was still good and will come back again soon. Good luck

Unforgettable tour! It is clear why Gamarjoba has the best reviews because they simply stand out in their service and offers! You are warmly welcomed in their meeting point, with free bottles of water, places to sit and chat. There, the guides will collect the groups for each tour. The Mtskheta tour with George Goldman is one of the best I have ever done in my life if not the best because he is so knowledgeable, kind, friendly and delivers information in a very clear and understandable way. I shared much of his knowledge with my friends back home and they were all delighted to discover more about Georgia. Really good job at explaining about Stalin's life at the museum in Gori. The lunch with the Goergian family is also a must, the food is so good and abundant, you can eat as much as you want and the traditional dance was soo cute. Everything was worth the money paid for it, it would have not been the same to go by bus or rented car because the knowledge achieved throught the guide and the interesting conversations were the real added value to it. Thank you so much!

You can't go wrong with this tour outfit. They have the organizational back office people to make sure everything goes off without a hitch, the tourguides are second to none, a good location near the metro, and when you go in the office there are plenty of people to help out, give advice, but mostly a smile, and you can tell they like what they do. After two tours I can say the guides are doing what they like. I say this because I prepaid for a tour with another company and the guide never showed up.

A short mention goes to two tour guides. One Len for the Tbilisi city tour. The next day I went on the 10 hour to Gori with May. And I can't say one is better than the other, because a good tour guide should have his/her own style. A kind of uniqueness, because really they are like gatekeepers to the "garden of beautiful things" that Georgia is so full of. They will provide you the context of appreciation, of being moved (yes), and understanding some of the history, culture, maybe a tiny bit of politics, but in a way that does not create separation. So both these guides deserve a honorable mention, maybe a 9 out of 10. Maybe and just maybe I would give May a slight edge, but really only because the Gori trip was more of a journey. She was very good with the introductions, asking everyone to say a few words about themselves, and this created a sort of family energy that we are on this journey together, like a part time family. Also she was very careful to not oversell information, you know where you remember there were lots of centuries, but what happened when and where gets all mixed up. She was also keen to ask us questions, if we noticed certain things at a church. And also she was not afraid to admit what she did not no, which happened in some of the Russian language exhibits at the Stalin museum. All in all I felt like I was in preschool, where the details are taken care of, and all you have to do is show up and the world made in Georgia unfolds before your eyes. So this is my little 'card of gratitude' for taking us on this journey, keeping us engaged, and of course the driver for getting us safely back to Tbilisi. Thanks to you all. Stay well. Sincerely, Filip from Warsaw

Everything about this tour was a hit. From the amazing Maryam (our tour guide), who had an icredible knowledge of the history of the places we visited to our visits to the people who were on this tour with me. The view from up the caves is breath taking.

The highlight of the day was lunch with a local family. We had the best of home cooked Georgian cuisine with home made wine and entertainment. We danced, laughed and made merry and you could totally feel friendship and family among the travellers. Our host at lunch, Tamar, was the absolute best!

If you're visiting Georgia and looking for a way to learn about Georgia and have fun while at it, I would totally recommend that you take this tour.

I really enjoyed this tour! I mainly came for the Uplistsikhe caves but also really enjoyed the Stalin museum and lunch with the Georgian family.
George (Goldman) was an incredible guide that is very well informed. He taught us so much about Georgia and its rich history. His tour of the Stalin museum was filled with incredible narratives and information you wouldn't know otherwise.
I highly recommend this tour for anyone visiting Tblisi and wanting to do a day trip out to see some other highlights Georgia has to offer.
I also recommend checking the other tours this company offers as they are great! We also did the Kakheti tour and really enjoyed it.

I did this tour as a solo traveler in July 2022.

This tour was very well organized. It was a fantastic experience and introduction to Georgian culture, people and history.

Your tour starts from their office. The waiting area is nice and cozy, and they provide complimentary coffee, tea and water.

Your group is no bigger than 20 people; this is a small group tour operator, and so you don't feel like you're like on one of those massive tour busses in Europe. I think our group was 15 people. You're taken to each of the sites in a comfortable air conditioned van.

Our guide was Giuna. He was very funny, knowledgeable and professional! Giuna was our personal guide at each of the sights except the Stalin Museum.

My favorite part of this tour was the family style lunch with the host family in Gori. The food and wine was delicious, and the host lady was so delightful.

The driving time between each stop was reasonable, and we were given free time to explore (30-45 minutes, and more if you skipped out on the optional lunch). You never feel like you are too rushed.

I highly recommend this tour, especially if you're a solo traveler. I got to meet some other cool and interesting folks on this tour. For $44 USD, you really get great value for a whole day.

The place is nice. I gave 1 as a rating because of the guide-Catherine lacks enthusiasm and some of her response is a bit dissapointing. She is boring and I thought I am the only one but found out after a couple of minutes that my friend is sleeping beside me and the couple at the back. I ended up sleeping too. I pity those Indian couple that with us as they did not manage to go up Uplistsikhe due to the wife's condition and they paid for the wine tasting that they did not even have the oppurtunity to try since it was done up in the hill. I told the guide about it and she just said its their lost. What??? Seriously!!! She should suppose to tell them that so that the couple can avoid paying for it. Even the small things like wearing scarf inside the monastery was not been relay. The van we have is also uncomfortable. AC should help with the weather its seems its not working. It's too loud also as one of the reason we csn't hear but did not manage to call our attention if we hear her or not. She is not even bothered. She also said that she did not have the time to explain about the monastery because we are sleeping. She did not even convince me to enter Stalin museum. We spend so much time in Gori doing nothing and lack time to explore Mtskheta which I find imteresting.
I message our account handler May which she's very helpful about it from the morning about the guide and will give her a chance but until the tour end nothing change and no improvement. Hope you will take this review into consideration.

So terrible review comes with the guide and the van.

Hello, Sorry for you experience but there are some things that needs clarification. First of all Catherine is one of the best guides and she is professional of her job, anyone can search her name and find reviews written about her. The fact that some people prefer sleeping during the tour do not mean it's anyone's fault. You were on the tour which is different from Kakheti wine region that you did last day. On this tour people don't drink much and do not have that much entertainment, but it's more historical tour. As you see we have not mentioned anywhere that in Uplistsikhe there is winetasting or anything like that. If those Indian couple has any issue they could let us know. Guide has not suggested to buy anything, it's definitely their mistake buying some things especially when they were aware of wife's conditions. We make sure that every minibus has proper working A/C. I don't see anyone else had any issue about it but if you felt like it was not cooling enough, sorry for that, We will take into consideration. Furthermore, Guide is not there to convince to enter any museum, especially when this museum is optional. It was your decision to spend time in Gori and not joining the group in Museum. You knew in advance the itinerary and timing as well, were sleeping while Guide was explaining and after all blaming guide on those things is not quite right. I hope you still had great trip in Georgia and wish you good luck
