Overview
Beautiful, wild and mysterious, Svaneti is an ancient land locked in the Caucasus, so remote that it was never tamed by any ruler. Uniquely picturesque villages and snow-covered, 4000m-plus peaks rising above flower-strewn alpine meadows provide a superb backdrop to the many walking trails. Svaneti’s emblem is the koshki (defensive stone tower), designed to house villagers at times of invasion and local strife (until recently Svaneti was renowned for its murderous blood feuds). Around 175 koshkebi, most originally built between the 9th and 13th centuries, survive here today.

Stop At: Mestia Tourism Information Centre, Zugdidi Jvari Mestia Lasdili, Mestia, Georgia

Svaneti is one the most beautiful destinations we can offer on this time, and our itinerary will expose you to all of the amazing experiences that the area has to offer. Mestia is the administrative centre of Svaneti and a good place to become acquainted with the unique culture of the region. One of the typical Svanetian watchtower houses is open to the public, while the Museum of History & Ethnography has an excellent exhibition on Svanetian life as well as a superb treasury of mediaeval icons and processional crosses. For centuries, Svaneti region was the place where the religious treasure (unique icons and relics) of the country was stored during times of trouble. The largest part of this rich collection is nowadays kept in Svaneti Museum of History and Ethnography together with the materials discovered during archeological excavations, unique engravings and manuscripts. Guests of this newly rehabilitated museum have amazing opportunity to visit 6 permanent exposition halls. Among the displayed exponents, visitors also can discover Svanetian domestic items, clothing, weapons and armor. Built at an astonishing 2400m above sea-level, Ushguli is the highest permanent settlement in Europe and one of the most scenic spots in Georgia. The village’s many medieval watchtowers are set against a background of alpine meadows, above which the great peak of Mt. Shkhara towers at a height of 5068m – the highest in Georgia. The 12th century Lamaria church set against the backdrop of this snow-capped giant is a sight you will remember for the rest of your life. Churches in Svaneti with very few priests, but many of the so-called “family churches”, Svaneti once again reminds us just how independent and self-sufficient the Svan people are and how their cultural and religious practices differ from those of the rest of Georgia. Painting the interior of the church is a centuries-old tradition, but in Svaneti frescoes are found outside the church as well and this is what makes the region unique. Visiting the medieval Lenjeri church, painted inside and out, you will understand that for the Svan people the church is much more than just a place of world. Highest peaks in Svaneti Shkhara 5068m Ushba 4700mTetnuldi 4617mship. Mulakhi Community is famous for its multitude of Svanetian towers. A picturesque road with Mount Tetnuldi and Tsaneri Glacier overlooking on it, takes you from Mestia.
