Enjoy a nature and birding tour on the Paraguay river, just 50 km from Asunción. On a boat ride through the river, we will head towards some less populated areas, where we could find large number of waterbirds, including different species of herons, storks, sandpipers, terns, kingfishers. We will also observe several birds of prey, probably seedeaters (depending on the time of year), as well as some of the aquatic mammals such as neotropical otter, or even caimans. We will also enjoy a beautiful sunrise or sunset (depending on the selected time of the tour), giving you the opportunity to capture unique moments with your cameras with the incredible nature that offers the Paraguay river. The rest of the Tour will refer to the round trip to this beautiful natural wonder. The total travel time will take approximately 2 hours with round-trip

Amazing and Authentic Tour of Paraguayan Chaco: Birds, Critters, and More!
I had an incredible 3-day tour of the Paraguayan Chaco with guide Fernando Beconi. I decided to hire a guide last-min instead of DIY'ing my birding/adventuring in this region and could not be happier. Point-person Alberto adjusted my itinerary quickly and without hesitation, taking into account my target species and location requests. My guide Fernando was extremely personable, fun, accommodating, skilled, and authentic. He is a local Paraguayan who speaks English very well and it was fantastic to go birding with him while learning about his life, country, and its remarkable history and culture. It was spectacular to sip mate in the Chaco after a long morning of birding before heading over to the Mennonite grocery-restaurant for some fantastic local food. Over our 3-day tour, we saw 143 bird (92 lifers), 4 mammal, 1 caiman, and 1 tarantula species. Fernando made significant effort to successfully locate many of my biggest target birds, including Chilean Flamingo, Jabiru, Greater Rhea, Southern Screamer, as well as my most wanted specialties/endemics including Black-legged Seriema, Chaco Owl, and Quebracho Crested-Tinamou. While we were unsuccessful in finding tapir or anteater, a pair of night drives allowed for Azara's Night Monkey, Crab-eating Fox, and a Pampas Cat vs. Jaguarundi. One of our stops was Fortín Toledo/Boqueron, the site of a major Chaco War battle (birding amid the bunkers and destroyed tanks) and a peccary conservation reserve, where we were able to see the endemic and endangered Chaco Peccary. It was nice to get a complete experience of rural Paraguay; both in term of its unique nature as well as insight into its people's unique challenges and way of life. At the conclusion of our tour, we arrived late back in Asuncion. I had planned to take a red-eye bus to Iguazu which Fernando had helped me book; he subsequently offered to later pick me up from my hotel so I would not have to walk with my luggage to the bus station in the middle of the night. Afterwards, he successfully helped me find and board my (surprisingly comfortable) bus to Brazil. I made a great friend in Fernando and could not be more thankful for his guiding and hospitality. In summary, this tour is an amazing opportunity for anyone visiting Paraguay to explore the nature, people, and history of this under-visited region of the world.

          Do This
This was amazing. If you want to see a large quantity of overwhelmingly fascinating birds in a beautiful setting with a host who is extremely knowledgeable, personable and kind then I strongly advise you to do this. And try to do the full day if you have time. You'll be learning about some incredible species from someone with the qualifications to really tell you about what you're looking at. I think this is one of my favorite outings I've had in awhile!

          Great birding
If you need to get out of the busy city, this nature tour is for you. The trip was well organised, with great communication and attention to detail. The ride was clean and comfortable. Our guide even provided a nice mid morning breakfast. Alberto was extremely knowledgeable about the area and all things wildlife. We saw several species of native birds, from song birds and finches, small parrots (or conures), storks and herons, large vultures, to majestic falcons and hawks. I had a wonderful day out and recommend this tour with confidence.

          Incredible biodiversity
This was an excellent experience. We were unsure due to expense on a limited budget but this was a/the highlight of South America/paraguay. We saw more different birds in 4hrs on the half day tour than most of our two months in central America trying! Specific highlights for us included : giant Jabiru, kingfishers and several close up moments with various other birds of prey. Our guide Isaac knew the names and many characteristics of the birds and also flora and good at spotting them! He was polite, conscientious, welcoming and also had excellent english and we had good conversation which contributed to an enjoyable time in the 1hr drive there and 1hr back. The tour takes you own private farmland managed with organic or sustainable practices, I think this contributes to the incredible biodiversity. The property owners are compensated with money from your ticket. Food was good enough. Morning tea coffee with helmeted woodpeckers knocking. We are not experienced twitchers but this was a bird like paradise. I expected a lot less. Highly recommend if you like birds and want a professional tour service to an unforgettable area of the world.

Great half day tour to see some nature
First off I'm not very knowledgeable about birds but Alberto was very kind and explaining everything. On the first day it was very rainy so he was open to rescheduling the trip which was great, since on the next day we had much better weather. We drove out to a ranch in the Chaco and saw various birds, they also provided binoculars. Alberto was a very welcoming and engaging host. Would happily do a longer tour with him!

          Super experience
3 days 2 nights in dry/humid Chaco was a wonderful experience with Alberto Esquivel. Even if 3 days (with all the driving) was very short, we saw quite a lot of birds and I was able to take some nice pictures thanks to Alberto that did a lot of 'U-turns' on the road. These 3 days were really intense and everything went as I'd hoped. Nice hotel, good choice of restaurants, very well organised (cold drinks thanks to the cooler)... I'll definitely be coming back to the region and will use Wildlife Paraguay again for my 'nature' visits.

          Flexible and helpful service
We had a tailored tour, so the details may not be relevant for others. What I will say is that Alberto is a very kind, helpful and knowledgeable person. He also suggested bringing his kids along (as we had two kids, so we agreed that this would be great). If you are taking kids I would recommend this, as his kids are just delightful.

          Great way to see Paraguay
In August my husband and I joined Alberto and his team from Wildlife Paraguay for the 10 day tour wildlife/birding adventure across the Atlantic Forest , the Humid Chaco and the Dry Chaco. Across the different eco-regions we saw wildlife including lowland tapir, chaco monkeys, crab-eating fox and pampas fox, armadillos, peccaries, the rabbit-like mara, and wild guinea pigs. I noted 135 species of birds, many of them endemic and some endangered. We learned so much from Alberto and his team’s expertise. It was a great way to experience the country and learn about the wildlife and the history. Accommodations were often rustic and there is a good amount of time in the car, often on challenging roads, but the reward is remote and unspoiled destinations. Adventurous and interesting experience!

          Amazing birding experience
I had an absolutely wonderful time during my recent birding experience in Paraguay. I was amazed by the diversity of birds that I saw, and my amazement was further reinforced by the knowledge of my tour guide, Alberto, who really made the birding experience exceptional. Given his advanced degrees, alongside WWF experience, Alberto offered expansive information regarding multiple birds and the surrounding area. The depth of his knowledge, coupled with his passion for wildlife in general, really made the excursion memorable. I would happily do the same excursion again whenever I visit Paraguay again!

A truly unique experience. Totally worth it!
Overall it was an amazing experience! Alberto was the perfect guide to travel. From the get-go we were able to see all different kind of wildlife. Starting with birds we even were able to observe armadillos, tapirs, pekaris and incredible insects. With Alberto you will have a guide that is taking care of everything, so you can fully enjoy the experience and wildlife of Paraguay.

I cannot overstate how awesome this tour was! Our guides, Alberto and Selene, were very knowledgable, friendly, and welcoming. We learned so much about the birds of Paraguay and they shared professional photos they took of the birds on our tour. We are so, so thankful that we had the opportunity to do this!

          Adventure in Paraguay
Paraguay is not for the faint hearted and certainly not for those who expect a pampered, luxurious experience, but I loved every minute of my 12 day tour, which included several national conservation parks within the Chaco, followed by 3 days in the Brazilian Pantanal. Sadly the weather gods were against us and it rained constantly for the first few days, thus many of the larger mammals we hoped to spot at regular water holes already had plenty to drink and stayed sensibly under cover in the inaccessible (very prickly) vegetation. A paradise for cacti enthusiasts! The bird life however was AMAZING and my guide Alberto was an expert at spotting and pointing out everything from the tiniest humming birds to the many large birds of prey. He was assiduous in looking after me (I took the tour alone and am not in the first flush of youth) he was also an expert at negotiating the extremely slippery, potholed and sometimes flooded dirt roads and very good company. The sun came out when we reached Brazil and our stay at Fazenda San Francisco provided a spectacular end to out trip with sightings of jaguar and ocelot and many other wonderful animals, butterflies and water plants. It was a real adventure and took me right back to my early days travelling in S America in the 70s. I would recommend Wildlife Paraguay to anyone wanting to experience nature in all its glories without too many tourist trappings.

Two of my daughters (ages 7 and 5) and I took this tour. It was the best thing we did in Paraguay, and I am so grateful for this experience. Everyone with Wildlife Paraguay was helpful and polite to us. We did the early morning tour, which began with a scenic drive out of Asuncion and through farmland, seeing cows, sheep, and water buffalo all amidst palm trees. After a quick breakfast, we rode in a motorboat down the river accompanied by a small dog from the property. We saw many birds, learned about the river system, and stopped to visit two locations, a small active island school on a ridge and a lowland area along the Paraguay River. We took a small hike at the end, and we viewed an historic church next to an area with huge lily pads.

My girls enjoyed the wildlife, looking through provided binoculars, playing with the four dogs on the property, and meeting a new little friend in the daughter of the boat captain. This tour is educational and inspiring. We genuinely enjoyed each part, walking through forest, driving through farmland, and cruising down the river. We saw sights that I won't soon forget, including kingfishers diving, a row of vultures on fence posts, and owls readying for bed as the sun rose in the sky. It was a memorable day as a family. Most of all, I am grateful for how considerate the tour guides were (the guide, the driver, and the boat captain), how much they considered our preferences and interests, how they were willing to shape the tour to best fit us. They were kind, good conversationalists, and just good at their jobs.

I sincerely recommend this tour and this organization.

I had the BEST DAY. This was such an incredible experience, from the kindness and knowledge of my guides, Alberto and Isaak, to the friendliness of our boat driver Arturo, this was the most phenomenal and memorable day. We saw some incredible species of bird and monkey, and I learned so much about the wildlife and ecosystems of Paraguay, but in way that was fun and relaxing. Heading to the confluence of the Paraguay and Manduvira rivers by boat was really special. It was a really hot day, so my guides suggested a slight modification to our itinerary so we would beat the heat a little. Much appreciated. They are very flexible and accommodating! If you are on the fence, trust me, you won’t regret this tour!!

This is one of the best nature tours I have done in many years. Alberto, the company owner and tour guide, was friendly and very knowledgeable about the flora and fauna of the area. On route to the estancia we stopped for chipas (local snack) and cocido (hot sweet tea). Was able to see many bird species during the land portion of the tour, which Alberto identified for me. During the boat portion, we had opportunities to see many more birds and monkeys. Arturo, our boat pilot and son of the estancia’s owner, was great also. He explained the efforts he was taking to develop a sustainable tourism infrastructure in his property. Lunch, as prepared by another estancia sibling, was awesome! A perfect activity to conduct while visiting Asuncion.

Everything was arranged verry well, the guides Selene an Guillaume where very friendly and relaxed even as the host of the place to sleep Arturo. We saw a lot of birds, monkeys and a snake and the food and everything was perfectly areanged, and the most important: we had a lot of fun!

I just returned from a 10-day trip to Paraguay and wanted to add my impressions of the country and Jose Acosta as a guide. Spoiler alert, he’s as amazing a guide as reported – and more.

I started communicating with Jose well before I went to Paraguay and, for my own reasons, I went back and forth on making the trip at all. From the first email, Jose was highly responsive, very informative, and always upbeat. When I (routinely) changed my plans or asked new questions, he invariably got back to me with revised information and new ideas. And during the first few days I was in Asuncion, when he was not yet working with me, he continued to respond to my every question promptly and offered tips and suggestions about what to do, where to eat, etc.

I hired Jose for four days and three nights to tour Paraguay and go to Iguazu Falls and I don’t know where to start – or stop – when singing his praises.
He is, to begin with, a lovely human being – kind, thoughtful, funny, and generous.
        His English is impeccable.

He knows everything – I repeat, everything – about Paraguay, having been a guide for 32 years. So whether you ask about the mating habits of the scarlet ibis, the Chaco War, soybean exports, Jesuits, Stroessner, rainfall, the coatimundi, flowers, Mennonites, healthcare – well, you get the idea – he’s an authority and, better still, a reliable one (as a former teacher, I more than once checked his facts, only to find them spot-on).

He also knows everyone and every place, which makes an enormous difference in a small country like Paraguay. For instance, we went to a church, Yaguaron, which in itself makes Paraguay well worth visiting, but it was closed. Had I been traveling solo, I wouldn’t have gotten in, but Jose made a call. Two minutes later a neighbor ambled over with the keys, and we had the church to ourselves.

We also went to the Monday Falls in Paraguay (I was the only visitor) and two UNESCO heritage sites, the Jesuit ruins (where, again, I was the only visitor). In each case, he provided background info and ably fielded any questions I threw at him.
Along the way, Jose arranged the itinerary and hotels (where I got a discount because of him). Note: as part of the cost, you pay for his hotel room, but it was inexpensive.

Speaking of which, I don’t want to say what I paid as pruces may change, but, having travelled with guides in scores of countries, he was a bargain.
At the end of our trip, Jose dropped me at the door of my hotel and, when he found out that I’d left my hat in the back of his car, insisted on driving back across town through rush-hour traffic to return it to me, despite me asking him not to worry about it.

Lastly, the Museum of Sacred Art, the Bogarin, and the Museo del Barro in Asuncion are all superb. The first two are very modest in size, but have wonderful holdings (again, I was alone in both), and the last is a more modern museum with a stunning collection of folk and modern art. The first two cost about $1.50 and the Barro was free (I was also encouraged to stay for a lecture and book signing, and when I said my Spanish wasn’t good enough for me to get much from the lecture, I was told to at least enjoy the snacks).

The best way to get around Asuncion, other than on foot, is by Uber or Bolt, both of which are very inexpensive – the 30-minute ride to the airport cost me $6.
There is a lot of delicious food in the city, and I particularly recommend El Bolsi (which Jose directed me to).

Having been to lots of countries, I always use my ATM card to get the best exchange rate, but in Paraguay my card (for reasons that no one could explain) didn’t work – and it worked in Transnistria! Ditto Apple Pay, despite the fact that Apple says three major Paraguayan banks honor it – they will, but only if you open an account. As it happened, I had $500 in cash with me but, and this is important to know, the banks and exchanges are very, very, very picky about the condition of American dollars – they don’t like small bills, and $50s and $100s have to be near mint. Of the 10 $50s I had, and I went to more than one place to try and exchange fhem, only half were up to snuff. That said, cash goes a long way in Paraguay – the exchange rate was about $12 for 100,000 guarani -- and you don’t need it for much, other than tipping. Credit cards, however, work almost everywhere even for small amounts.

And while in Asuncion, I stayed in the Palmargoa which was excellent, well situated, and had a rooftop pool.

To wrap up, I went to Paraguay because I like going to countries that are not teeming with tourists, and it definitely fit the bill – as noted, other than Iguazu Falls (which you cross into Brazil to see), every attraction I visited was deserted, or nearly so. The country may not have blockbuster tourist sites (unless you’re a birder, I’m told), but the people are friendly and helpful, and the price is right. If you go in with high expectations, you may be disappointed, but if are someone who travels with an open mind, you will be rewarded.

And, of course, having Jose as your guide is a must.

This was a very enjoyable outing from Asuncion; the drive out past the airport wasn't too far and then the boat ride itself was very nice. Excellent professional service offered by Alberto from Wildlife Paraguay.

You will enjoy a beautiful experience through the river with a wonderful landscape and birds in their habitat.

Almost at the end, a small stop for a coffee and a small snack while enjoying the sunset.
