After reading other reviews we decided to book this trip and it didn’t disappoint. We went as a family of four (2 adults and 2 children aged 13 and 7).

The whole day was incredible.

We were picked up from our hotel and took to the pier where you can very cheaply buy drinks, clothes, waterproof covers etc before boarding the boat.

We visited a number of different caves and lagoons during the day and for each had the same guides (typically 2-3 people per guide) who knew so much about the animals living there, the history and so on.

We had lunch on the boat which was so good as well as unlimited bottled water.

As the sun sets we made floral style offerings and floated them within one of the caves.

The whole experience was magical, the kids loved it and the day seemed to fly by.

We would definitely do this trip again if we come back to Phuket.

The experience was exceptional! Every crew member cares about guests and they are all very professional with their equipment and routes. I feel so bad forgetting about our rower's name but he's the best guide ever! He explained how some weatherings were formed and introduced us the animals and plants we see along the trip. The food and drinks were good as well! We recommend getting some soft drinks/beer from the shop before departure if you want.

I highly recommend this day trip. My husband, daughter (who is 22) and I went on the excursion. The food is all cooked on board by two amazing ladies. It is authentic, fresh and delicious. The trip includes lunch and dinner. The kayaks hold 3 people, two guests and a guide. Because we were a group of three, Sun matched up my husband with one of the other guests. Names of guides were drawn by each group of two. We had Done and Min. These gentlemen were awesome! Knowledgeable, funny and able to answer any question we had. We quickly felt comfortable and relaxed with them.

Most of the caves we went into led to lagoons that are on the interior of the large stone islands. These were beautiful and so interesting! We saw monkeys, smallish monitor lizards and these little fish that could move themselves on the sandbars with fins that were more like arms. Before dinner, the guides turned the kayaks upside down and tied them together end to end. We took turns trying to run all the way to the end. Everyone cheered on the individuals attempting to make it to the end. It was so much fun and a great way to make everyone on the boat feel like a team.

There was plenty of staff on the boat to answer questions and they were always offering interesting tidbits of information. What you see on the kayak trips was amazing, but the staff on the boat was the icing on the cake. One of the comments I had seen in reviews for excursions was that with bigger boats, it would take longer to get everyone in and out of the kayaks. That was absolutely not my experience. Sun and the guides had the process perfected and it moved quickly. I had also heard that getting in and out of the kayaks was hard. I am a 58 year old woman who carries more weight than I should (thank you Covid). I was able to get in and out of the kayaks without a problem.

Our day with John Gray tours ended with the bioluminescent plankton. It was amazing. I can't think of a better way to spend a day. Make sure you bring baht to tip the guides and boat staff. They work hard and deserve it.

This trip was over an above anything I was expecting.
While the start location was not as expected, once we got on the boat and started on our voyage towards the Hongs everything came alive.
We were all assigned our own personal rower for the duration of the trip, and they are all so friendly and welcoming. It was great to get to know the staff on a personal level, their stories of how Covid has affected their livelihood in particular.
The journey to the first canoe spot took around 50 minutes, during which we were served snacks, water and ice tea or coffee.
As the tide changes daily to different timings the first couple of canoe spots weren’t as interesting as the tide was low so you couldn’t see much, though our rower offered up many interesting facts about the geology of the region.
Onto the next location we had more snacks and drinks, the caves in this location were much more interesting, with an amazing lagoon surrounded by exotic bird song and monkeys, it was like something out of Avatar.
Dinner was provided, a mixture of local curries and rice, I can’t eat spicy food an there were options I could eat too.
The absolute highlight of the trip was making the Loy Kraton and floating them in the cave after sunset.
We made the kraton with the help of our rower who told us about this history of the festival and the meaning of the kraton.
This was such a beautiful experience and one of our highlights of our trip to Thailand.
I would absolutely recommend this trip, I didn’t find any other company offering this same experience, and while we were there we only saw one other boat the whole time. A must do experience while in Phuket

The tour is okay, we spent more time on the boat than actually on the kayak. Each group of 2 is assigned a personal guide who takes you on the tour of the Hong island. I think we spent a total of 1.5 hours on the kayak, the remaining time was in the bigger charter boat. They provide lunch and dinner, both meals which were delicious, and they show us how to build a Krathrong (Thai floating banana leaf lantern), and float one into the caves. Whole experience was okay, would have been better if we had some time to do some free swimming and kayaking but the tour guide mentioned that the currents were too strong that day. We were lucky that the weather was clear, would not recommend this tour if it was on a rainy day.

The staff were very friendly, would recommend this event for families with children.

John Gray’s Hong by Starlight with Sea Cave Kayaking and Loy Krathong
My husband and I had the good fortune to experience the most amazing day spent with John Gray and his magnificent crew! What a day...
From the moment we were collected from our hotel in a private taxi, driven with care by Por, to our Port destination to the end of the day, the attention to detail was second to none.
All staff, whatever their role were friendly, courteous and went out of their way to make your experience with them unique. And so it was!
It took an hour to the first stop during which time we enjoyed a delicious lunch. We were then allocated our ‘Captain’, Olé, who then stayed with us throughout the day. There was one ‘Captain’ per canoe (two people + child if there was one in your group). Olé canoed us through the caves into the most beautiful lagoons and gave us all the detail and information about the islands and caves.
We then returned to the boat for coffee and 10-15 minutes later, in our canoes, we had arrived at the next cave and lagoon. This time we saw monkeys and other native wildlife. When we returned to the boat, we could either swim in the water or canoe independently around the boat. Attention to customer safety was paramount at all times.
Once we had returned on deck, we were guided by our Captain to make a flower offering with candles and incense (Loy Kratong for the annual November Festival but the crew do this daily for the purpose of the day tour). We would dedicate this later after dark on our final canoe ride.
Each Captain has their own design and these offerings look truly beautiful especially when gathered all together.
Once completed, we then had the most amazing buffet of Thai soup served to you by your Captain (a lovely touch) and then helped ourselves to a delicious dinner of rice, salad, seafood and more.
You are asked about any food or nut allergies or vegetarian preferences at the beginning of the day so the crew clearly cater for each and everyone’s needs and tastes.
No sooner than dinner was concluded, we were on our way back to the first island which took about 10 minutes and anchored up to watch the most exquisite sunset. A great photo opportunity.
Once the sun had gone down, we were back in the canoes with our flower offering and gathered together near the caves to light the candles and incense. All I can say is, what a beautiful and emotional experience this was. Absolutely unique.
There was no rush but shortly we returned to the boat for the hour journey back to Port and our same taxi driver, Por, was there to greet us.
Amazing staff and special mention to Olé who made it for us, the chefs who home cooked all the fresh food and which was delicious and the Captain navigating the boat and his perfect taste in music!
Summary:
Five stars all round. An exceptional and outstanding experience.
You will not be disappointed. Only if you miss this amazing opportunity to experience such a wonderful and memorable day!

Definitely book, you won’t be disappointed! A most enjoyable day. A note to those with claustrophobia- to get into some caves you need to lie down flat in the inflatable canoes, as some of the cave openings are quite small. The cave ceiling will be directly over your face for 30 seconds or so. Only one cave is very tight, and of course you don’t have to go, but do try! The entire time you have a guide that paddles and controls the boat. They know what they are doing, very friendly and a lot of fun! Once inside the caves you’ll get to marvel at beautiful serene lagoons and all the nature that lives within it. You might get to see monkeys, snakes and funny frog-fish creatures! The trip is well organized, food is delicious and making the offers is a lot of fun. Once it’s dark you get to go to the Bat Cave, yes it’s full of bats! So cool. You enter the lagoon, light your offering candles and float it in the water for a bit, it’s quite a beautiful experience. On your way back out through the dark cave, your guide will turn off his light and in the pitch dark, wave your hand around in the water to see all the bioluminescence. It’s just magical! Everyone works hard to ensure you have a wonderful time. I would highly recommend!

We joined this trip on Weds 10 August 2022. Taxi pick up was on time. We had perfect weather and from the start the experience was excellent. On arrival there so a shop where you can buy just about anything from clothes drinks, drybags, hats etc, there’s an ATM in one of the shops on the way to the pier. Around 40 passengers were aboard with plenty of crew. They serve lunch as you head off.
Lunch is amazing. Noodles, rice dishes spring rolls and lots of fruit.

Shortly after lunch we arrived at the first kayaking location. Then they paired up one paddler to 2 guests for the exploring. You’ll be pleased to have a paddler as it’s quite a lot of work.

We returned aboard to afternoon tea, banana muffins and more fruit.

Then the 2nd kayak trip followed by free swim time or you can paddle yourself. The water is very salty but you can shower down with a hose when you get back on each time. Kids had fun doing somersaults off the side of the boat.

After dinner which was an even bigger spread than lunch. Water is plentiful throughout the trip. You can take your own drinks too and put them in the ice box. We made the Krathongs, helped by our paddler there was quite a bit of competition between them! Floating them was nice from the kayaks after dinner. The final trip through the cave to see the bioluminescence was truly unique. Just running your hand through the water brought the light show to life.

Great information throughout the trip. We all had a fabulous time.

I would agree with other reviewers who say "if you can only go on one tour while in Phuket, make it this one". It truly was a one-of-a-kind, amazing experience we will never forget. Our personal guide on the kayaks was Oopsy, and he did a wonderful job pointing different things out to us (in his very good English). He even sung us a few songs along the way.

One of the highlights of our tour was when we encountered a large group of monkeys congregating on a small beach that we passed. There were many adorable babies in the group, and all of the monkeys were engaging in some hilarious antics. We were able to get quite close.

Overall, this tour was also not too tiring, even though it was long. We were not in the direct sun for much time at all, and I enjoyed the leisurely pace of everything, even though we were basically always engaged in one activity or another. I would highly recommend this tour if you are in Phuket.

At first it looked like the tour was going to be busy but then we were informed two boats would be taking us - this meant plenty of space on board! The food was great and in abundance but it would have been nice if some soft drinks were included (even if only offered with dinner). The kayaking is spectacular, some guides know/talk more than others, and you do get a chance to go off on your own for a bit. It was a super day and the hosts make it very fun!!

Dear Samantha Thanks for leaving us your feedback. John Gray Sea Canoe always adapts to the number of guests, so it will be never crowded on the boat(s). There are "only" Thai soft drinks included - the original Thai drinks like Roselle syrup which lets you cool down during hot weather (no Coke).
