About
Bale Mountains National Park is suitably a walking, trekking and hiking area for hikers, culture and nature enthusiasts, wildlife watchers, researchers and more. The park is known for being home to the Ethiopian wolf, mountain nyala, giant molerat and Bale monkey. UNESCO has estimated that more mammal species would become extinct were the habitats of the Bale Mountains to decline than if any other area of equivalent size on the globe were to disappear and, when this is combined with rare amphibian species, endemic birds and spectacular flora, it is easy to see why the park is designated as a Biodiversity Hotspot by Conservation International.

4 days treck, echotourism, sleeping at local's or camps in the Balé mountain (DODOLA ADABA treck)
I arrived from hawassa via Shasheme to Dodola which is closer than Dinsho. There there is a guide association that can organise for the next day a treck on the Dodola - treck wich is basically a trail with camps designed 20 years ago by some german guy. I just got food and a guide and we walked the mountains for 4 days, sleeping in bed in basic camps or at some familly's place. it can be more or less days, you can hire a cook or hoses. You ll look for your breath as this happens over 3000 meters but you ll get used quickly. Baboons, hyennas, white tail monkeyx and really nice endemic flora and trees . Ayano my guide was fluent in english and has encyclopeduc knowledge on the ebndemic species we walked through. contacts : i just arrived and f afternoon at the mountain bale hotel wich is more like a restaurant but where you can meet shibiru ( who speacks french) who can organise what you want for the next day. or you can try to contact them before : Shibiru : shebrumarifo2@gmail.com Ayano Abraham : +251 91 334 8375

          Great
Hussain, Aliyi, Shewa and the team gave their best to make the trip comfortable. Weather was overall very good. The horse riding to Rafu and Rafu itself was unforgettable. Only hiccup was that the car was not in a good condition. Great trip overall.

Great tour with the best guide
We just came back from a long trip all over Ethiopia. Ethiopia is an amazing country with wonderful and beautiful people. We had with us the best guide ever, Ebrahim Ahmed Erdis, very polite, supportive, helpful and great company. We were feeling very safe during the whole trip. Ebrahim +251912255345 is also a great trekking guide (mountain machine) specializing in Bale mountains. Totally recommended.

          A world by the sky
Although it was mainly driving, with the exception of the last few hundred metres to the summit of Tulu Dimtu, the frequent stops combined with a lack of overall traffic - we seemed to be the only visitors, made it a sublime experience. You notice the air thinning once on the Sanetti Plateau but are constantly distracted by the wealth of rodent and bird life, the views across the plain and the peace. Taking it easy, the ascent is straightforward and an absolute must, just as the descent into Rira through the Hobbit like Erica forest and Harenna area. Had the obligatory Kale and bread lunch stop and then were fortunate enough to enjoy a troop of Bale Monkeys, supposedly shy and retiring, gathering fruits not 10m from the road. As the mist and cloud descended over the plateau on the way back, a pair of wolves suddenly emerged from nowhere, crossed in front of us, stopped and slowly ambled off into the late afternoon.

          Explore Bale mountain 3 days
We traveled, a family of five, a couple of parents and three teenagers, for three days in Bale mountain under the guidance of Mohammed. We started near Dinshu and saw many wild animals. The next day we went to the plato and got to see the red wolf. We climbed to the top of Tullu Dimtu. The next day we hiked through the magical rainforest and waterfalls in the area. Mohammed is an excellent guide and with a very broad knowledge and he is happy to share, he knows every stone and path. On the last evening he took us to a local family who taught us how to make injera. Mohammed is patient and pleasant and we highly recommend him. +251913958802

3 day jounrney into Bale Mountians
Bale Mountain National Park had been on my list to visit for years, and is a gem of Ethiopia. My guide Mohammed Worko a Dinsho Local, was extremely knowledgeable about the area in both the town and National Park. I was at the tail end of a longer trip, and opted for a cheaper budget and he was willing to work with on me on the price providing various options and itineraries. He also provided a tent and a sleeping bag which were much needed (waking up to frost on the ground in Ethiopia was very surprising). The park is one of the most unique and incredible places I've been. Bale ranges from waterfalls, to valleys, forests, alpine plateaus and so much more. This is one of the places that displays the beauty and diversity of Ethiopia. Seeing animals such as the wolf and nyala is amazing, but only scratching the surface of Bale. The unique ecosystems and environments make this place a must do not only in Ethiopia, but Africa and the world. The flora and funa here make it seem like you could be on another planet at times. Besides our group and the rangers, it seemed as if I had the park entirely to myself. We trekked and camped by the Dinsho lodge and the Sodtota campsite, spending the night with the rangers. After this we drove to the Herena forest and the Plateau. I opted for a faster 3 day tour due to my time being extremely limited, but you could easily spend a week in this environment and still not see everything. Mohammed is a great guide and I couldn't recommend him more. He was really accommodating and consistently provided me with information both prior to arriving in Dinsho and during the trip. I was in contact with him for a few months since arriving in South Africa and started traveling North. We planned this trip in a small amount of time and Mohammed gave me the details on how I could travel from Hawassa in the south to Sheshemane and onto Dinsho. If you did not know Ethiopia. I would suggest flying into the airport and arranging private transport. Mohammed can be reached at on +251913958802, and mohammed.worko13@gmail.com. If you come to this part of the world and pass up this opportunity you will regret it. Bale is unspoiled and beautiful landscape that is a must visit. There are some many things here that you will never find anywhere else.

          Top nature tourism
Bale Mountains is my top location for nature tourism and serious trekking in Ethiopia. I did three tours there already, including Sanetti plateau and Sof Omar cave, Harenna Forest and most recently (December 2022) a 5 day trek up from Dinsho. I always travel with Jamal Kassim (https://www.tripadvisor.com.mx/Attraction_Review-g293791-d15643693-Reviews-Bale_Mountains_Authentic_Tours-Addis_Ababa.html) because he really stands out for being a very reliable, professional and knowledgable tour operator.

          Tour threw Bale Mountains
I spent a day and an afternoon in the Bale Mountains. Awol was my tour guide and he has an extremely great knowledge of the park. I could see many wild animals like monkeys, mountain nyalas, ethiopian wolf and a few more. The Bale Mountains are very diverse and beautiful. From pristine forest to highland to rainforest, you can experience a lot in one day. But you can definitely spend more time in the national park. I can highly recommend Awol as a tourguide. Bale Mountains - Refreshing
I did a private tour with Jaka to the Bale Mountains. First off, Jaka is friendly and engaging. He speaks clearly and professional in conducting the tour. I enjoyed the sights and Jaka sharing his knowledge of Bale Mountains. We ate at a quality restaurant on the way up. The food was good: booked potatoes and carrots with greens, pita bread and honey, and of course I had Chai. Jaka produced two nice sized papayas as a top-off. They were so delicious. The scenes are those one would imagine on National Geographic. There was one area that Jaka referred to as an 'old man's beard'. It was so peaceful and serene. Definitely would love to do Bale mountains again.

          5 day-trekking Bale mountains
In February 2022 I did a 5-day tour in the Bale mountains. The nature is very impressive. We were able to see nyalas, wild wolves, monkeys, mole-rats and bushbucks. In the way we saw nomads riding their horses. We started in Dinsho and camped in a tent. The day temperature was very nice but at night it was minus 5 degree centigrade but fortunately we were sleeping in Alpine tents with very warm sleepingbags. The climbing at 4000 meters was sometimes not easy due to the high altitude, but step by step I made it. I recommend to bring pills for high altitude sickness. The Bale Mountains are very beautiful because of the diverse volcanic landscapes and wild animals you encounter along the way. We went out with a guide, cook, 3 horses carrying the luggage and 2 horse handlers. The guide, his name is Awol knows a lot about the area. He excellently organized all the materials we needed such as an alpine tent, good sleeping bags, a table, stools, etc. He is a very knowledgeable and pleasant guide that I highly recommend. You can contact him by +251922771302 and email: awolhule.ah@gmail.com

Hiking from Dinsho to the Sanetti Plateau
Bale would be one of the world's most amazing national parks if it didn't have about 100,000 head of livestock in it. The entire park is grazed by cows, sheep, goats, donkeys, and horses. We saw almost no area that wasn't grazed in our 4 days, 3 nights hike in Bale. First, I should say that I like somewhat extreme hiking adventures and am not used to having a guide. We started in Dinsho, walked to Fincha Habera falls, stayed at Sodota, then walked into the mountains around Wasema, then to Sanetti campsite on the plateau, before catching public transport out. Often people start trekking from near Dinsho, whch is 6 km through villages. Because of another review, we caught a tuk-tuk through the village and were able to skip most of that. We had one guide and no horses or porters. Bale is geologically stunning, the plateau at 12, 500 feet. The giant lobelia plants are beautiful and I actually found the way people live in the park, interesting, 15,000 people live there. We had nice encounters with the Ethiopian wolf, seeing six. An English man, with a vehicle, that we met in Sodota, saw pods of 11 and 16. It's cool around Sodota, how many rodents there are, and the wolves and so many birds hunting them. It gets really cold on the plateau at night. Although I found staying in tent nice, as cold as it was. You need a hat, warm coat, and gloves are helpful too. Fog roles in thick and quickly on the plateau. I don't know what one would do in this case except pitch a tent and get in their sleeping bag. We made it to the Sanetti campsite, as a thick fog rolled in. Rain would have been a big problem in the cold temperatures. The high elevation makes the UV rays really strong and you should use sunscreen. I've never been that badly sunburned in my life, which was part of the adventure. We did, on the last day, go to the area right around the park headquarters that has a concentration of wildlife, Nyala, Menelik bushbuck, reedbuck, warthogs. This is typical of Ethiopian parks that the only wildlife is found right at the park headquarters. It was an enclosed 1 square km, or so. It was a little sad being there thinking of the potential for wildlife in the park. We did, however, see a large heard of different antelope while driving out of the park. So, there may be other areas where good wildlife can be seen. There are some amazing hiking loops around Wasema mountains, which people don't seem to do often. But it also gets really windy. One of the highlights was the rock falls off of Harcha sp.? mountain. We saw a couple hidden waterfalls on the plateau. I really enjoyed the ponds that form there. Lots of birdlife. Lots of birdlife in the entire park. We were too late in the year to see the red hot poker flowers. I hear they start in June. September is supposedly really rainy. A standard tourist route is to go from Fincha Habera falls , to Sodota and then on to Adelay. This was the original plan for us, but when I saw how flat it was, I talked with our guide about changing the plan. It seems to be very easy walking on a flat plateau. The mountains were much more interesting. It tends to be tough walks up the side of a mountain that end in a nice plateau. Then this repeats. We lost our breath easily at 12,000 feet. Our guide, Awel, was really an incredible person, having grown up in Dinsho and spent much of his life working in the park. I have a lot of experience being around guides in Ethiopia, from many years in the country, many of them not great, but Awel was wonderful. Awel was super strong with amazing endurance. He knew, and got along with, everyone in the area. And when we extended our stay, he found us extra food from friends in the park. He was very good at solving problems and making our life easier. He even found my friend a horse, on the plateau, with a guy he knew, when she became exhausted. He was really helpful in setting up camp and cooking, etc. He saved us from a super cold, windy, foggy, night, by getting us into a hut. His number is +251 922292225, awelsultan310@gmail.com.

          Amazing Bale Mountains
In February this year (2021) I was in Ethiopia for the fourth time. This time I have been also in the Bale Mountains. It is not without reason that they say that these are some mountains and many worlds. There are many deer in the Dinsho Park. The Sanetti Plateau is a colorful plateau. Harenna Forest is a fairy-tale forest. and of course Tulu Dimptu - 4,377 meters above sea level. It's cold in the mountains. You need take a warm coat. But impressions are not forgotten for a lifetime! My guide in Bale was Ibrahim Ahmed ( phone/ WhatsApp +251912255345 ) I higly recommended him! He is very sympa and friendly person!

6 Incredible days in Bale Mountains with Armaye and his team
My daughter and I returned a few days ago from an amazing 6 days trek in South Eastern Ethiopia organized through Bale Mountains Eco Trekking. Armaye is an excellent guide, very friendly, humorous and keen to meet everyone's expectations. His knowledge of the Bale Mountains is indisputable and he is keen to pass it on. Above all his great kindness, always attentive and responsive to our wishes. In addition, he is surrounded by a team of outstanding cooks and camp assistants. They can organize all the logistics of the trip including cook + kitchen staff + equipment carriers from camp to camp. The food was great, always excellent tea and coffee. Bale Mountains is a beautiful place, very varied landscapes far from the hustle and bustle of the cities, and we had the chance to see many birds and wildlife, it was a unique and great experience. We were super happy to spot the Ethiopian Wolves and that was the highlight of our trip. All this couldn’t have been possible without the help of our guide and his team. We ended the trek with a ride to Rira where we were able to admire the flora, very different from the other parts of the park as well as monkeys, precisely the bale monkeys. Then we returned to Dinsho. Wonderful memories. Thank you for everything!

We were for 3 days in the Bale Mountains with Ayouba our guide.
It's a awsome place : the diversity of the nature, the flora and the fauna : we were able to see wolves (thanks to Ayouba!) very close. Ayouba knows this park as his home and he adapted the trek to us. This park is still not very well-known and it's a pity because it's a beauty ; I hope it will be registred in UNESCO as soon as possible.
We traveled in the South and in the North (included in the Simens Mountains, Lalibela and Gondar) but the Bale Mountains is still our best moment in Ethiopia. I really want to thank again our guide Ayouba for everything :)

We did an incredible tour of 3 days in Bale Mountains. They place is amazing (even when it rains)! Our guide, Huseyin Mamush, was always kind and shared lots of information with us. He has a great knowledge of the area and was flexible to accommodate changes to the itinerary. The rest of the team was also great! Food is very tasty and they provide quality tents.

We were 9 days in Ethiopia with children aged 14,12,6.
We hiked with our guide Ayouba Ahmed :)
We hiked in several places in the mountains and South Ethiopia, but much of the hike was in the mountains: we rode horses, toured the plateau and saw red wolves, slept in a local hut, and witnessed the wonderful nature of the people, animals, waterfalls and plants. All the way Ayouba controlled the area, adapted himself to our desires and the ability of the children, but did not give up on us so that our experience would really be maximized.
        Highly recommended.

Spent three days trekking in the Bale Mountains with Mohamed and it was one of the best parts of our trip to Ethiopia. Camping out on the plateau meant spectacular scenery, beautiful night skies and a lot of wildlife. We saw Ethiopian wolves, Nyala, hyrax, hyena and my favourite - the hyrax. Throughout the trip, we were fed wonderful food by the team chef, Awul. Everyone on the team was fantastic and made sure we had everything we needed. I would recommend this trip to anyone who likes trekking and camping.
A couple of words of advice - bring suncream and warm clothes. The weather changes rapidly as you climb! Also make sure your bag is waterproofed - when it rains, it rains a lot!

Another stunning place in a stunning country. My guide was Mamush, a lovely human being, knowledgeable, passionate and who goes the extra mile to have you live a joyful experience. Whatever may not meet your expectations, he gets that fixed with all available means.
The landscapes are diverse and cater for all tastes, I personally put Sanetti Plateau as my favourite.
Unfortunately there is too much illegal grazing inside the boundaries of the national park, particularly in the moorland.
It seems to me the revenue model of the park does not work quite well, needs more investment but also skilled direction to both preserve the fauna and improve the services.

We did 3 nights of trekking through the Bale National Park with a night either side in Robe and Goba. Our guide through all of this was Ahemd Alo (Bale Mountains tours). Ahmed is a local man from Dinsho who is a wealth of knowledge and runs a very professional business. Highly recommend.

Had a great trip trekking with guide Jamal Kassim at Bale Mountains Authentic Tours. Camped one night close to a Ethiopian wolf den and spent lots of time watching four cubs playing; such an incredible sight. Spectacular views walking through the landscape with plenty of sightings of Mountain Nyala, Menelek Bushbuck, Rock Hyrux, Mole Rats, etc. It was a particularly cold few nights with sub-zero temperatures but fortunately we had two sleeping bags each. Jamal and team did a great job; we ate well and everything was organised very well. Jamal can be contacted at jamalkassim.bale@gmail.com or WhatsApp +251912767179.

We've very much enjoyed this trip with guide Jamal (jamalkassim.bale@gmail.com, +251912767179)! It is amazing to see how well-organised this trip was, given the circumstances. When we were hungry, there was good food. When we felt cold, there was a campfire and the sleeping bags were just perfect. Horses were carrying our luggage, and the chefs made sure that there was always coffee and tea just before departure and upon arrival. If you take this trip, do bring sun cream, because we burned on literally every naked spot. The cold wind made us forget the power of the sun.
During this well-organised trip we saw many beautiful animals and uncountable beautiful views. We saw many nyalas, reeboks, warthogs, birds and we even saw 6 Ethiopian wolves greating each other in the early morning. The last day we went by car to the plateau and the tropical forest. As a sad, but quite impressive bonus we were driving in the middle of millions of locusts. All in all, the four days were well-spent and we got a pretty complete picture of the huge park. Thanks a lot, Jamal!

Me and four friends camped in the Bale Mountains with the help of our great guide Mohammed. We stayed in a campsite with wild animals roaming around - warthogs near our tents! We went on several relaxed nice walks in the park, and did one big adventure to the second highest peak in Ethiopia. We had a great time. Ali G, a great chef cooked delicious vegetarian meals for us. We had a warm campfire which prepared us for the cold nights and there were beautiful views of the stars. A lovely trip that I would recommend. Mohammed was very accommodating and speaks good English. It was interesting to speak to him about the park and the work that is being done to increase tourism in a responsible way.
