Lead by an astronomer and astro photographer, our experiences avoid the overcrowded Onizuka Astronomy Complex. We stargaze away from the crowds on Mauna Kea or Mauna Loa and time slots are hand selected to avoid the bright moon. Experiences are only 2 hours long and offer a stargazing guarantee or it’s free.

Zodiac and much more with James
Cloudy in Kona, a bit of fog at the parking site but James knows his island and drove us to a great clear location. Very impressive night sky and a great tour. He laser identified all of the visible zodiac constellations then got out his camera setup and showed us galaxies, Jupiter, nebulae- his camera gets great colors. Haven’t gotten the personal pictures yet but I’m impressed by the ones on the website. We were in a group of 8, didn’t feel at all crowded. We also got a chance to take our own Astro photos with cell phones (android >> iPhone)! Parkas are good but long underwear under pants made it great.

      An amazing experience
Reminded of how small we really are when you get to experience all that the universe can offer from this great viewing location. The tour guide James, kept us informed of changes leading up to our viewing time. No pickup option from either Kona or Hilo, but drive to meeting point is easy. James is knowledgeable and points out what is visible and keeps reminding us wait till the moon is completely below the horizon, that's when you truly get to see the wonders of the night sky. The location of the big island and being above the clouds truly a great and awe inspiring experience. And yes it will be cold...tour is above 7000 feet at least.

Couldn't ask for a better Tour
If you want to see stars in a relaxed uncrowded atmosphere this is the tour for you. We left Hilo to meet the tour in a driving rainstorm at 10:30 at night to meet James out in the saddle road. I was thinking I had to be whacked, no way were we going to see anything that night. James took us up to one of his secret spots at about 8,500 feet and sure enough there was the night sky in all its glory. James did his photo shoot, then we all just laid out for an hour or so soaking it all in. We got back to Hilo around 2:30 AM, completely satisfied with the experience.

Book this NOW! Do not hesitate and do not book any other stargazing experience!! James is absolutely the real deal. Our experience was better than we could’ve imagined and our whole group of 10 all agreed that we picked the best to guide us through our stargazing.

      Breathtaking!
James was very knowledgeable and you could tell he loves what he does! Super friendly! The view was absolutely breathtaking as a blanket of stars surrounds you. Through his photography he located and showed us in absolute detail many nebulas, galaxies, etc. something you have to see for yourself, it’s beyond words. It was very cold and he had parkas available which was a life saver! I would def recommend coming with lots of extra warm clothing and thick socks. Once in a lifetime experience!

      Hands Down Fabulous
Highlight of our trip to Maui! James met us on the top of Haleakala. Wow! What an amazing experience. I’ve never seen so many stars. Our photographs were out of this world and we continue to be amazed by them. When we are back in Hawaii’s Big Island, we will definitely do this again!!

      Breathtaking and Educational
Amazing experience - really cool to be out in the true dark with hardly any light intrusion. James knows his stuff, and his equipment is mind-blowing. I've spent plenty of time at the McDonald Observatory in West Texas, and I learned and saw things on this trip that I have never learned nor seen before even with the big official telescopes.

      Excellent tour!
This tour exceeded my very high expectations. James is very knowledgeable about space and the photos he takes are nothing short of amazing! Doing this activity was the highlight of our trip. James is super responsive to emails, texts, and phone calls. He does everything he can to ensure an epic adventure. The opportunity to see the Milky Way, a nebula, Jupiter, Saturn, and the Andromeda Galaxy, was well worth the price.

Incredibly disappointed in this tour, esp for the price. Save your money and go stargaze on your own. Not worth it at ALL.

Incredible experience! Not to be missed!
James was incredible. I had done the stargazing trip with him in August 2019 when on island and sought him out for this one. We were fortunate that Kilauea had started to erupt again just before our visit (we toured dec 27, 2020.) he was extremely knowledgeable, chill and great with our young kids (4 and 9). This is a once in a lifetime experience that is worth every penny. He knew exactly where to go and got great pictures at Kilaeau then took us to a steam vent after and shared more about the Big Island. I can’t recommend highly enough! I wish I could post pictures but resolution of pics too high for TripAdvisor.

Star gazing was on the top of our list of things to do on the island. This is by far the best tour. It is very cold and remember to wear thick socks because the provided parka’s don’t cover that part (lol). There are so many stars you don’t ever see and this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. James is so informative and patient to capture everyone’s picture. I don’t recommend this for kids as even my teenager had a tough time with the temperatures being so cold for so long. James will move you time if the moon or weather interferes with your peak experience. Definitely check this out. The drive to “the spot” feels like an alien planet. You will need to purchase higher resolution pictures if you want to have large prints made of your experience.

James is such an awesome guy who provides a really great tour. This tour is around the same cost per person as the summit sunset + stargazing tours you can book with other providers but it's a little bit different experience. James searches out a more remote spot that could change from night to night depending on the conditions. This means you won't be around the hordes of people at the MVIS where the other tours stargaze from. James also includes photos and you can even upgrade to get higher quality photos (plus he sends you a whole set of really awesome photos he has taken on other dates). The night of our tour we went way up the Mauna Loa access road to where the lava flow crossed the road and you couldn't go any further. We were the only group up there so it was really nice and dark. You will have to provide your own transportation but you also don't have to spend 7-8 hours on a tour so it's a trade off. James did provide jackets if you didn't bring your own, which was nice. He also took some very nice photos of each group with the milky way in the background (and in our case he also took photos with the lava flow in the background but of course that is location dependent). Highly recommend if you have your own transportation!

James, Dylan, Malia, and Alex were super friendly, very knowledgeable, and great guides. It was fun to see folks truly enjoy teaching folks about the cosmos and get their geek on. Dylan was amazing at fielding any and all questions and really encouraged everyone, including the kids, to ask away.

It was not a particularly cold night but they were well equipped with blankets, parkas and warm beverages. Highly recommend this experience.

Experience was on Mauna Loa as they shifted their from Mauna Kea to avoid crowds there. There was no other groups. We were a couple there amidst total group size of ~20 - no traffic at all.

The stargazing tour was amazing! James was patient and flexible to ensure we would have a great viewing experience. Recommend booking early in the trip this time of year (April) so you have the option to reschedule if clouds/weather aren't cooperating. James let us know the afternoon of our original date that clouds weren't looking good so we rescheduled. We paired a drive up to Mauna Kea visitor center for sunset with meeting him for stargazing. Our start time got pushed back quite a bit to 945pm again due to clouds but he kept us informed. He provided jackets to help keep us warm, chairs to sit and look up at the stars and had great equipment to make viewing easy. He was patient with everyone's photo requests and the pictures are beautiful! Our 10 year old son really enjoyed this despite being tired and our younger kids were able to comfortably stay asleep in the car as we viewed from right next to where we were parked!

Thank you James for a spectacular evening and beautiful photos of us. We came to the Big Island from New York specifically to experience the best dark sky stargazing and Astrophotography on Mauna Kea. We like small groups, personalized experiences in locations not frequented by the large tour companies. Check, check and check! James brought us to a perfect location away from anyone or anything else where we had the perfect view of the Milky Way rising and billions of stars. After getting us set with warm parkas and reclining beach chairs to really lean back and enjoy the night sky he gave a great presentation of what we were looking at (the parkas were fine for us, but dress warmly and even bring an extra blanket if you’re prone to being cold, it was in the 30’s). He then took individual pics with everyone in our small group of about 12, spending time with each of us to get the best poses with the Milky Way behind us. James is an astrophotography pro – he has the experience and equipment to get the shots we had envisioned. We also purchased the upgraded photo package for a hires poster size print we made for my son’s wall to remind us of our adventures. We highly recommend an evening with James, it was one of the top highlights of our time on the Big Island. Lastly, we booked directly through his website epicbigisland dot com.

This was an amazing tour. The night we went out was the night before a new moon and the sky was simply EPIC. Everywhere you look you saw shooting stars. James had a helper with him that handed out jackets and blankets to everyone and prepped the telescope so we could look at the celestial objects while James was talking about them. I had my two children with me (14 and 12) and they both loved the tour. They tell everybody who will listen about it. I was on the tour with the person who started to get altitude sickness. Yes, our tour ended about 20 minutes early, but James on the side of caution and brought them down to their car. He told everybody else (we all drove ourselves) that we could stay up the rest of the time and hand the jacket back on our way down. It wasn't a big deal, we all had our fill seeing the stars. There were a couple of children on our tour who didn't have the attention span for this trip, but that isn't James' fault. Otherwise, it was an Epic tour for sure.

One note, we viewed the stars from Mauna Loa, not Mauna Kea, but in my opinion, that was better. Except for one car, we didn't see anybody on our tour except who we were with. You could see all the cars driving down from Mauna Kea from where we were and it looked pretty crowded.

This was my third stargazing tour on the Island and it was by far the best. The other two were Hawaii Forest and Trail and Mauna Key Summit Tour. I would tour with James again before the other two.

Thank you James for the EPIC trip and memories.

James takes great care in positioning and timing his tours just right, and our tour in June '21 was breathtaking. Book early (weeks and months in advance) since he keeps his groups small (<10 people). He scouts the location before nightfall to check the cloud activity. He texted us mid-day to change meeting locations (complete with Google Maps pin and GPS coordinates) but then texted again 90 minutes before the tour to revert to the original meet-up point. Do not worry if it's cloudy where you are when you start driving to the tour rendezvous point; the clouds will drift away, or you'll drive above them before the tour begins.

Pay attention to the tour start times; James factors in the moonrise (and sunrise) times to set the optimal viewing windows each night. Our 830pm tour was perfect since the moon didn't rise until 1030pm that night.

The roads from Waikoloa are well striped and reflected; the night drive to the meet point wasn't difficult at all. James will drive you in his van the final ten minutes, or you can take your own 4x4 if you have one. He also provides parkas, which you will need for standing outside for two hours in 40-50F temps. Wear pants, thick socks and shoes (not flip flops!).

James used his green laser to point out stars and constellations (some of which are only seen in the southern hemisphere, which Hawaii is close enough to), and we had a great view of the Milky Way all night long. The photos he took of our family were outstanding and will end up framed and hung on a wall in our home.

Overpriced Star Lecture - Not a True Stargazing Experience

We were really looking forward to this stargazing tour, but unfortunately, it did not live up to expectations—especially for the $684 price tag for two (including one high-resolution photo upgrade).

James, who seemed very pleasant and knowledgeable, was relegated to handing out stale candy, hot chocolate, and taking pictures, as the main presentation was handled by Dylan Reader. While Dylan was certainly informed, his attempt to mix astronomy with bad stand-up comedy felt forced and detracted from the experience. Instead of an immersive stargazing adventure, we got a long cosmic lecture with no hands-on viewing.

Yes, we saw some deep space images through a picture on a phone, but for this price, we expected more hands-on viewing, telescope use, and a truly awe-inspiring night under the stars. Instead, it felt more like a scripted science class with cringey jokes rather than looking through telescopes and seeing celestial objects like planets, nebulae, and galaxies in real-time.

If you're looking for a true celestial experience, this is not worth the cost. For a fraction of the price (or even free), you could stargaze on your own with better results. 🌌🔭👎

Aloha, Mahalo for sharing your feedback. We’re really sorry to hear the tour didn’t meet your expectations. We put a lot of heart into creating an unforgettable night under the stars, so it’s tough to hear when someone leaves feeling disappointed. We try to make our tours a mix of science, storytelling, and fun, but we get that not everyone vibes with the same style. Your thoughts on the balance between the presentation and actual telescope time are super helpful, and we’re taking them seriously as we look at ways to improve the experience. As for the price, we know it’s an investment, and we always want our guests to feel like they’re getting something truly special. The cost includes use of a 6 inch astrograph telescope, astrophotography of each of the guests with the Milky Way Galaxy in the background, expert guides, and access to a location far from other tourists. If it didn’t feel worth it to you, that’s something we need to look at. We really appreciate you coming out with us, and we’d love the chance to make it up to you. If you’re open to it, reach out to us, we’d be happy to see what we can do. Either way, we hope your next stargazing adventure is everything you’re looking for. Wishing you clear skies and epic nights.

This was one of our favorite activities. Our tour guide James was very knowledgable, patient, and you can tell how passionate he is about what he does. The sky was incredible. We were able to get beautiful pictures at the end. It was a small group which was nice. We were provided with parka jackets, but it does get cold so would definitely recommend dressing warm.

James was pleasant to deal with during the booking process. Our original meeting time was 10:30 pm but James sent us a series of texts before and during the drive to the meeting point (Pu'u Huluhulu Cinder cone parking lot) delaying it an hour or so. There were 3 or 4 other cars waiting in the very foggy weather when James emerged from his truck and gave us instructions to follow him up the Mauna Kea access road to a turnout on the side of the road about a mile short of the visitors center.

It was cold - the jackets provided helped but we were still freezing even with all the layers we were wearing. We laid down some blankets in a nice open clearing and then James proceeded to point out some stars and setup his equipment. And although we were thankfully above the thick cloud deck, the stars didn't appear all that bright. And he was hard to hear.

What was rather disappointing is when a solo astronomer arrived in our space. James thought he was a ranger, got distracted, and cut our tour short. We abruptly left and drove down to another turnout to quickly take pictures in a less than ideal location. Wasn't worth the rather high price and standing in cold conditions.
