Amazing Hike on Kona- Hidden Craters and Volcano Tour
The views and overall experience of this tour is amazing, but what made this tour INCREDIBLE was our guide Mel. She was informative, educational, funny and just made the day such a great experience. This is hands down my favorite guided tour.

This company is first class all the way!
Hawaii is expensive and it's tempting to not invest in taking an organized tour. However, to see the Mauna Kea summit at sunset, and view stars, the money is WELL worth it! Jason was our guide and he's a rock star. Very knowledgeable, personable, and really knows his business. Risk management of people was a large part of my career, so I'm hyper-tuned in to safety, and EVERY aspect of Hawaii Forest & Trail is excellent.

      Amazing time!
What an amazing adventure! This was a small group of only 12 of us which was the perfect size. Our guide Jeff was the best. Kept us informed on what to expect and shared alot of knowledge on the island and volcanoes with us. The dinner was delicious as was the hot chocolate during the stargazing. Highly recommend

      Informative & Awe Inspiring
We took the Summit & Stars tour. From the moment of our pick-up in Kona until the drop off 10 hours later, our guide Jason was fantastic. He was knowledgeable, friendly, and welcomed all questions. He was very accommodating with my husband's mobility needs. We saw a gorgeous sunset from the mountain top followed by star gazing. We appreciated the small group size and dinner was good. We highly recommend this trip.

Beautiful setting, but a challenging climb!
Getting to see two waterfalls was a great experience! Our guide took us through the most difficult climb first, for which I was grateful. Since I am a bit unsteady on my feet, the assistance the guide offered was necessary and appreciated. The waterfalls are quite secluded, and the swimming area looked refreshing. Our picnic lunch was on a lovely bluff, with the ocean below--a stunning view!

Mauna Kea Summit and Starts Adventure
I took this tour on Monday March 10, 2025. It's a memorable and unique tour. Our weather and visibility was not ideal on this day, otherwise would be 5 stars. Our tour guide was patient and knowledgable, especially in astronomy and helped us find and know what we were looking at during our stargazing which took place at the 9200' level. Seeing the telescopes, the view from the summit, though limited by visibility, and being on top of Muna Kea in all its grandeur was quite an experience-thanks Hawaii Forest and Trail!

      Great Experience
One of the highlights of our Hawaii vacation. Jeff, our guide, was fantastic. His comments to and care of our group enhanced the experience. Warm picnic and parkas were a must since the temp at the summit was 32 with blowing winds. (Take gloves and hat along.) His two telescopes helped us do some amazing stargazing. We even were able to see Kilauea erupting in the night sky. This tour should be on everyone's bucket list.

      Must-Do in Hawaii!
I highly highly recommend this tour. Our guide, Jeff, was so knowledgeable and really added to the whole experience. From the history of Hawaii to his insane information about the constellations, this was a really special experience. Sunset above the clouds was pure magic.

      Fantastic
The tour was excellent, not only due to the scenery but, more importantly, due to our guide John. He is extremely knowledgeable about many things (geography, geology, history of the island, etc.), and was very accommodating and entertaining. I highly recommend this tour - it was fantastic!

Breathtaking view and learned a lot
Debra…is…amazing! The hike is super informative about Hawaii history and native land. The views are beautiful and one of a kind! The small group made it nice as a solo traveler to get to know the people around me. Everyone was super nice and helpful/encouraging to swim under the waterfall ti everyone in the group. Great experience! Would do it again

      Fantastic night with the stars
This was really a special night out star gazing and great for budding astronomers and your average adventurers alike. Our guide impressed with his local knowledge, understanding of the night sky, and unique, Hawaiian cultural interpretations of the stars. Worth every penny.

Highly recommend this tour for those who love nature and a bit of real hiking. Active family of five with three young adults (18-21)—we loved it! As described by the operator, this tour includes a drive up the volcano to about 5,000 feet and a hike up another 1,000 feet via old paths exploring volcanic craters, lava tubes and enjoying the natural environment far off the beaten bath. The tour is on privately-held land that is fenced off so access to this fabulous piece of nature has very limited access. We were greeted warmly at check-in. Our guide, Matteo (with Tracey riding shotgun today) was excellent. We were provided with walking sticks, rain jacket (not needed), snacks, water and gloves (for the lava tube crawl), and even provided us hot towels at the end of the tour. How great is that!? We feel very fortunate to have been able to participate in this activity!

Jon was amazing, he made sure that everyone on the group had water and snacks before departing the van. He shared so much about the island's plant and animal life that added so much to understanding the diverseness of the Big Island. I would recommend this tour to anyone who can physically do it, just make sure you get Jon has the guide. He took it from good to amazing.

Loved the Hawaii Forest & Trail tour of Hidden Craters - our guide, Mark, was really knowledgeable and passionate about plants, geology, history, and how all the elements of the ecosystem work together. His enthusiasm made it very fun and interesting, plus we liked that he clearly has a respect for the land and the history. Loved walking high ridges and dipping down into lava tubes. This was really fun, I feel like it helped us understand Hawaii better, and I highly recommend it.

Such a beautiful hike, not too hard or challenging but enough to feel like a hike. The non-public views are so amazing. The craters are much more than expected and the lava tube was memorable for sure. The diverse terrain and atmosphere was a treat. The guide was very knowledgeable and fun. We had a great time and would recommend this to anyone who likes to hike and enjoys nature.

There are tours and then, there are TOURS! We've been wanting to hike Hualālai for several years now and finally took advantage of Hawai'i Forest and Trail's guided tour.

To start with, the company was very Covid-ready, ensuring a safe time both in the van and out on the trail. Seven people - the perfect size, and in our case, the perfect group mix...we had a blast. Masks on in the van and during any closer gathering.

Taj was our guide - he was exceptional in his knowledge of local lore and Hawai'ian birds, flora and fauna. You felt the myths and the history come alive as he talked with us during the hike. We left feeling a bond with him personally and he really made the experience the best it could be. We love languages as well and Taj explained a great deal about Hawai'ian pronunciation and different words.

The hike itself is very reasonable with plenty of breaks to take pictures of, and just take in, the amazing views and scenery. My wife and I love the outdoors and are avid geology students so we saw so much that was new for us and felt enriched in our knowledge.

Highlights are, of course, the lava fissures, the different birds, and the lava tube adventure. All extremely doable by just about any age if you are fit and enjoy the outdoors.

My wife and I highly recommend this tour. Well worth the investment of time and money. Go for it!

30 years of guided tours - it shows ! Wonderful tour with Garry who clearly loves what he does . Hiking through volcanic rock paths, peering over crater rims, squeezing through a lava tube and descending through a rain forest with a group of 10. His personal knowledge and passion of trees, flowers and birds added to an informative tour. Highly recommend!

What an unforgettable experience. The most beautiful and fun hike I have ever done. You get to climb into a Volcano Lava tube. There were some sharp rocks inside, and they had a rope you can use. The best is the guide teaches you how to just use the branches and rocks instead to climb through. It was very cool.

My second favorite was the views, just breathtaking. They bring you to the top of a few very deep craters. I went with my husband and it was such a special experience. The tour guide is just awesome, after climbing any somewhat steep hill, he would take mini brakes to tell you a story or give information about Hawaii. Really grateful for the experience! Thank you for the fun memories. I highly recommend

This is the thing to do when you come to Hawaii! If you are in good physical shape and hike regularly you should really really try this out.

This is a hard hike, I wont mince words here. The elevation is steep and the Guide (Our Guide was Jon) was very helpful showing the way and making sure everyone was okay. This hike was the Highlight of my trip.

We only had 6 of us total including Jon, we all were at different paces at times but no one was made to feel bad about it but again I do need to stress that this is a Hard hike. Its little less than 1000 ft elevation gain and about 2.5 miles total distance. Its hard, but sooooo worth it. The Lava Cave alone is worth it.

I wouldn't plan anything afterwards just to be safe incase you are mega tired. I also recommend bring more water than you think, we had our 32 oz Hydro flasks and ran out just a bit before the end of the hike, it was all good as there was refills at the van when we wrapped up.

Again the best part of my whole trip, I will come back and take this tour again it was so good. Thank you Jon for your guidance and the great hike!

We often hike the Makaula O'oma Trail and its a treat. The crater hike is further up the mountain into a protected area that only Hawaii Forest & Trail have permission to enter so that makes it special. I have said this before, I have had good experiences with guides, usually they have been on the islands a few years and have learned enough to do the tour. Hawaii Forest & Trail guides are entirely on another level. The 3 guides I have been with have all been on the island for decades and are devoted (fanatic) experts on all things Hawaiian. Our guide Mel(lanie) exemplified this.
The hike itself wasn't that difficult, even for an old large guy like me. There were many things to stop and look at so there were no long slogs. It of course helped that we had perfect clear weather all day.

Mahalo for your thoughtful review! It’s wonderful to hear that you enjoyed the Makaula O'oma Trail and had such a memorable experience on the crater hike, especially with the added privilege of entering a protected area that only Hawaii Forest & Trail can access. We’re thrilled that Mel’s expertise and enthusiasm for all things Hawaiian made the hike even more special. It’s great that the hike was manageable for you, and the clear weather definitely added to the experience. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, and we look forward to welcoming you back for more unforgettable adventures! 🌿🌋

I did the Hidden Crater Hike on 1/29/22 with my nephew, his wife and daughter that were visiting the islands. The hike was great but what made it even better was our guide-Taj. He was entertaining but also so knowledgeable about the land and passionate about the sustainability of the island’s. Highly recommend this hike!
