Slip into Marlborough Sounds for a swim alongside pods of wild dolphins, with certified guides to help find the dolphins and ensure the tour is dolphin-friendly. Watch for dusky, bottlenose, common, orca, and Hector’s dolphins, and if conditions allow, you’ll have the chance to view the dolphins from inside the water. This dolphin tour includes wetsuits with hoods and booties, as well as hot drinks on board the boat, and round-trip transport from the Picton waterfront.
What to Expect
Your half-day dolphin swimming experience begins at the base shop (address to be provided on voucher) at 8:15am. You will be fitted for a wetsuit, mask and snorkel, and given an in depth safety briefing on what to expect and how to act around the dolphins.
You will then be taken out into the Sounds. There are five different species of dolphin that frequent the waters. They include Dusky, Bottlenose, Common, Orca and the rare Hector's dolphins. Once out in the water, you'll look for at least one of those five. You will be provided with binoculars on board so you can help look for the dolphins, as well as ID cards of various marine animals and sea birds.
Once spotted, cruise with the dolphins and get ready to swim if conditions allow. As a permitted operator, the tour abides by the rules and regulations established for dolphin swimming and viewing activities. If conditions are good, then the trained staff places you in the water, where you will experience a true adventure for your soul! Once you come out the water, your guides will be waiting with warm water, hot drinks, and some cookies, which you can enjoy while we cruise back to Picton.
The tour will primarily operate in an area of little to no sea swell — meaning seasickness will not be a problem for you. All equipment is provided for you. Just bring your swim wear, a towel, and your camera.
