Take a humbling lesson in the horrors of World War II's Holocaust on this day trip to Terezin from Prague by bus. Traveling with a professional guide, discover the former Nazi deportation camp where Jewish prisoners used to be transported, a converted 18th-century fortress where many thousands died at the hands of the Nazis. Tour the barracks and compound of the Main Fortress; visit the museum, cemetery and columbarium; and learn how the Nazis presented the camp as a lively Jewish community to dupe official Red Cross observers.
What to Expect
Meet your guide in central Prague to Bohušovice nad Ohří, just north of the city. On route, hear how Terezin started life in the 18th century as an Austrian fortress before being converted by the Nazis during WWII into a Jewish deportation camp.

Arrive at Bohušovice station. Pause here to see the old sidings from where many Jewish people were transported onward, and then drive to Terezin’s Main Fortress.

Enter through the gate inscribed with the Nazi message arbeit macht frei or ‘work sets you free,’ and tour the buildings as an expert guide charts the atrocities that took place here.

View the barracks, crematorium, columbarium and SS camp headquarters, as well as other sites. As you look around, hear how the Nazis used Terezin as a show camp to dupe Red Cross observers into believing all was well, parading it has having everything from fake leisure facilities and shops to a theater.

Behind the facade, while Terezin did not preside over gas chambers or mass exterminations, the camp caused the deaths of many thousands of prisoners. Visit the poignant museum to trace the stories of some of the prisoners, view some of the drawings made by the children held here, and watch a Nazi propaganda film about the camp.

While the facts of what happened here are shocking and distressing, your guide will explain everything in a sensitive and considered way. After your visit, return to Bohušovice and ride the train or bus back to Prague. Your trip concludes at the railway station.

Sarah was the best tour guide I've ever had, EVER. The tour was included an extremely well rounded mix of stories, facts, buildings, artwork, pictures, videos, and discussions.
