It was our first trip to Blue Mountains and we hardly had any clear idea of it. The explorer bus turned out to be a great way for us to explore around. We did a lot of walks/ treks around Katoomba and Leura (considering whatever routes were open post heavy rainfall and landslides) including the world famous scenic world and the three sisters. It took us 2 days to complete our trip. The bus drivers and the staff were very friendly and gave live commentary while driving around. They also guided us about some exciting new places nearby.
Also take time to visit the small coffee shop next to the explorer bus office, to the right as you exit the Katoomba station.. The guy is very friendly and fun to talk to. He can give you some excellent tips about star gazing if you are into it.
Highly recommended.

Being young (mid 29s), At first I was hesitant to this tour and thought maybe I can just walk to all the sights I wanted to see or catch the local public bus.
BUT so glad I decided to do this tour, the guides/drivers were so helpful and suggested walks I wouldn’t have done otherwise. The guide book itself is great, with maps and suggestions.
Very handy having the bus and being able to save energy and legs to see and walk more of the sights, instead of wasting energy getting to /between them.
I chose not to do scenic world, but a number of walks.

We enjoyed the day with this tour. The drivers (Garth and sorry, didn't get the other's name) were very friendly and informative. Convenient pick up/set down at our hotel. Unfortunately we were unable to use the Scenic World rides as bookings had to be made on-line in advance due to current restrictions. Highly recommend this tour for seeing the sights and informative commentary.

Man on kiosk and bus driver really lovely. Bus had a great route and was very information, good guide book too. Only let down was one of the buses did not turn up towards the end of the day, which meant we had to wait in the very cold weather for over an hour. Let down the trip as made us ill. Worth the price otherwise

Hi Bea2W Firstly, thank you so much for your extremely reasonable and indeed, generous review considering that we fell short. There was unfortunately, a mechanical issue with the last bus. Pre-Covid we would have had another bus on the circuit within 10 or 15 minutes, but sadly our current visitor numbers simply don't allow for us to have standby staff and vehicles as we have previously had. Hopefully we will get back to this as soon as possible. Can I please offer you a complimentary family pass for whenever you are able to visit again? Please email damien@explorerbus.com.au whenever you are able and I will organise this with you. Again, thank you so much for your review that is so reasonable. Many people would just look at the one negative instead of the many preceding positives. We are so sorry that we didn't give you the BEST experience, and we hope you will come back soon.

This is a great way to get around the main tourist spots of the Blue Mountains. There is a very informative booklet with the timetable, details of the stops, descriptions of the walks etc. The drivers were also very friendly and helpful - they gave an informative commentary and they also explained really well where to get off and which walks to do. For example you can get off at one stop, do a walk and get back on at a different stop. The drivers explained it brilliantly and patiently and the maps and bus timetable in the booklet made it very easy to follow. I was travelling solo but I did lots of these walks no problem. This Bus Conpany really made my trip to the Blue Mountains - it was a fantastic experience.

At first we thought it was a little expensive, but it was absolutely worth it. I would not try to do it all in one day as there is so much to see, especially if you are going to go to Scenic World like we did. Each driver we had was funny, informative, and just an all around great person.

*) The Explorer bus stops are pretty easy to locate, as they are well-signed, and the drivers tell you where to go and what to look for.
*) The Buses run in loops.
*) The drivers are helpful, punctual and informative.
*) Although expensive, but very convenient.
*) Try to sit in front of the upper deck for better views.
*) Would suggest HOHO bus to install wipers on the glasses, gets hazy in minor rains.
*) Starting point is very conveniently located opposite Katoomba Raliway Station.
*) I took Trolley Tours for Jenolan Caves, but found Explorer Bus guys to be more professional and experienced, with proper regard to the convenience and timings.
*) You see the ticket office as soon as you come out of Train Station. Here you can exchange your Link Ticket for the Hop-On-Hop-Off ticket-cum-booklet.
*) If at any stop you want to get down, press the red button at the poles in the bus after the previous stop is gone, and your stop is yet to arrive.
*) Buy Blue Mountains Explorerlink Ticket ($49.80) from any station Station, which includes your journey to Katoomba, a full day pass on the Hop On Hop Off Blue Mountains Explorer Bus and a return from Katoomba. You cannot buy any of the train tickets in advance, you have to buy them only on the day of travel.
*) Download the timetable of Blue Mountains Line (Central to Katoomba & back) to plan your day well:
http://www.sydneytrains.info/timetables/#landingPoint
*) From Central take the train to Katoomba. From Katoomba, hop on to Blue Mountains Explorer Bus.
*) Travel Time from Central to Katoomba: 2 hr 13 mins
*) The first Explorer Bus of the day leaves Katoomba station at 9.45 am.
*) The first and last stop on the Explorer Bus route is just across the road from Katoomba Station. Look for the red Bus Stop sign in front of the Mountain Ridges Cafe. If you arrive on a Cityrail Explorer Link ticket, simply exchange your Link tickets for your guidebook before you first board the bus from their office located right in front as soon as you come out of Katoomba Station. You can also purchase your ticket for the Scenic World here, its nothing but a blue wrist band and with this you can go directly to the rides. This blue band is scanned at entry to the various rides. You do not have to stand in queue for tickets, but you do have to queue for rides.
*) Tickets: Unlimited Discovery Pass - The ultimate Scenic World experience. Includes unlimited rides on the Railway, Skyway, Cableway and Walkway. Adult: $35.00.
*) It you have time, it is not a bad idea to spend a night in Blue Mountains area, the place is worth investing time in. The whole area is very beautiful and well-maintained.
*) Katoomba has a lot of cafe and eateries, so its a nice place to have breakfast before you explore Blue Mountains.
*) The Guide book is your ticket for the Hop On Hop Off Blue Mountains Explorer Bus. If you are standing on a particular stop and waiting for the Bus, this Guide Book is what you have to wave to the Bus Driver to signal him to stop. And the Guide Book contains wealth of information about the area, just spend a couple of minutes to get acquainted with the organization of the guide book.
*) Hop off the bus at Stop 9. This is the Stop for Scenic World.
*) The Explorer Bus will pick you up from the coach parking area right outside Scenic World. The Explorer Bus Stop is well marked and is in the Coach Parking area near Coach Bay 1. So you should have no trouble finding it on your way back.
*) Hop on to the bus from the same place where it dropped you. Look for bus timings in your Guidebook. Hop off at Stop 15. Honeymoon Lookout. Bus stop is on the opposite side of the read to the lookout, when hopping off the bus wait for the bus to depart before crossing the road. From there I did the W5 Walk which starts from Honeymoon Lookout, goes through Cliff Top Walk, Three Sisters and finally ends at Echo Point. Approximate distance is 1 km, grade is easy, time required is approximately 40 mins, but could vary with your stamina (Australians have a very good stamina). Covers a good amount of rainforest and ferns, views but no waterfalls. This is one of the most popular walks in the area.
*) The last stop of this Walk is Echo Point itself which is an amazing lookout, it offers two levels (floors) of lookout. The Visitor Centre at Echo Point is a good place to pick up information, maps and souvenirs of the Blue Mountains. There are public toilets here too. The Three Sisters can be viewed from the main lookout or the Queen Elizabeth or Prince of Wales Lookouts on the lower levels. A walk from behind the Visitor Information Centre will lead you to the top of the Three Sisters via Honeymoon Bridge from the Giant Stairway.
*) It is recommended that you do this walk from Stop 15 back to Stop 14 because it’s easier to find the bus stop at Echo Point than at Honeymoon Lookout. IMHO, I was not particularly impressed with the walk, I found the deep rainforest via the BoardWalk in Scenic world more fascinating and easy to walk. But then W5 is the first walk/trail I had done in my entire life so I do not have any reference for comparison either.
*)Be carful about the timings of the HOHO Bus, they operate only till 5:30 PM.
*) If you have time, make sure you take the entire circuit in the HOHO bus, the entire route is very scenic. I did it twice sitting on the front seat on the top floor. Awesome experience and perfect way to end the day sitting down, after walking all day.
*) The HOHO bus leaves you at the same place where it picked yoy up from. Opposite Katoomba Station. If you have time before your train leaves, there is a Subway nearby which has vegetarian options (Veg Patty & Veg Delite) and take-aways.

I choose to visit the Blue Mountains on a day trip from Sydney without using a tour. I took the train from Sydney's Central Station to Katoomba. The train trip takes about two hours. The train has four cars (which I think is standard, at least for this time of year) of which the first and last cars are "quiet" cars where noise is supposed to be kept to a minimum. This seems to generally be the case except for the foreign tourists who either can't read the signs or choose to ignore them. The train was right on time and quite comfortable. The scenery along the way is nice; much of the area you pass through is forested. A train leaving Sydney at about 7:30 AM gets you into Katoomba in time to make the first tour bus out.

The tour bus is conformable and runs about every 30 minutes. Drivers are friendly and helpful in recommending hikes and sights in the mountains. I first got off at stop 9 and did a short loop hike down into the canyon. The trail is well kept, and although it is considered moderate, be aware that there are a lot of stairs both down and up. I then did a hike from stop 15 back to 14 along the canyon top, a pretty level and easy walk that takes you back to the main viewing area near the three sisters. I last got off at Leura Cascades (stop 17) walked down to the the falls, and then back up and along the canyon to Gordon Falls (stop 19). This was a longer hike with many nice sights along the way. The trail was a bit rough, but still not difficult. I then when into Leura to look around the town and back to Katoomba to again visit the town and have dinner. Both Leura and Katoomba have nice shops and restaurants.

The weather was brisk and windy the day I was there, so the bus offered some warmth and a place to get off my feet. The area is not big, so if you had the time and energy you could probably walk it all without the bus. I avoided Scenic World because I'm uncomfortable with heights. There are other hikes down farther into the canyon that I did not do, which might be the best the area has to offer.

You should realize that the towns are perched on the plateau directly adjacent to the canyon, so you are always quite close to houses, motels, and other facilities that line the canyon edge. As an attraction itself the canyon is a nice diversion from Sydney. It certainly is not as large or dramatic as, for example, the Grand Canyon in the US, so you might be a little underwhelmed. I was back in Sydney by about 7:00 PM,

We loved our active, exhilarating, and fun day with beautiful views, made easier with the Blue Mountains Explorer Bus. In Sydney, we walked to the Central Train Station and bought the Blue Mountains Explorer Train package with a credit card for $57.50 AUD ($41 USD), then caught the 7:23 am Explorer Link train to Katoomba. We stopped in at the train station to pick up a timetable for the return train to Sydney, walked up the ramp, picked up our map/timetable/invaluable guidebook from the Blue Mountain Explorer office and then caught the first hop on hop off bus at the stop across the street. The Explorer drive/guide was extremely helpful in planning our day to work around the rainy weather, and provided us with complimentary bright orange rain ponchos. We hopped off first at Scenic World, where we paid, via credit card, $35 AUD ($25 USD) for access to all of the rides. At Scenic World, we took the Scenic Railway down, walked to the Scenic Cableway Bottom Station, rode the Cable Way up to the Top Station, stopped for a break, and then rode the Sky Way to the East Station. We tried to walk to Katoomba Falls but it was closed for construction. We then walked to the Echo Point Lookout, visited the Gift Shop and restrooms, then walked on to the Giant Stairway, the Honeymoon Lookout, and the bridge to the first of the Three Sisters. We then walked back to the Echo Point Lookout and met our Blue Mountain Explorer bus. Again, the Explorer bus driver was informative and interesting during our bus ride back through Leura to Katoomba. If the weather had been nicer, I would have stayed on the bus for another circuit, but since it was cold and rainy we took the next train back to Sydney. I had difficulty deciding where to post my review, since TA has separate entries for the Blue Mountain Explorer, Scenic World, the Three Sisters and the Echo Point Lookout, so hope that you will find this review helpful for visiting all of these outstanding Katoomba attractions!

Hi TexasMomTW Thanks for your review. Active, exhilarating and fun! It sounds like you made the most of your Blue Mountains Explorer Bus and Scenic World experience. It's always great when we know our passengers have followed the brief and maximized their time. As you are no doubt now aware, there is so much to see and do here, and you certainly did most of it. We hope you will come back and visit again, and thanks again for your fantastic review, it should prove to be helpful to many people. Damien Booth

This is the best way to explore the Blue Mountain. Don't have to pre book a tour which is much more expensive. My advice is take a train to Lithgow (blue mountaine line ) at the Central Station and make a stop at Katoomba. Once arrived, just go directly to the Explorer Bus counter at the Katoomba Station and purchase the Lydebird package at AUD 70 which allows you to get unlimited hop on hop off bus ride, train ride pass, skyway and cableway rides. I recommend you to stop at stop no 9 first then only explore the rest of the stops if you have time. Remember to begin your trip as early as 8 am from the central station because usually the mist will appear starting at 2-3 pm and you will not be able to see the breath taking views of the whole area.

Good morning Afidzah, Thanks so much for your review. I am glad that you enjoyed your day and thanks for the advice for fellow travellers. Just for the information of other travellers, while some days can be misty it is not every day so the mist appearing in the afternoon is not every afternoon. You can check the weather before you come or call our office for advice prior to leaving Sydney. Afidzah, enjoy the rest of your travels and thanks again. Regards, Jason
