Enjoy an off-road adventure in the wild of New Zealand on this half-day Wakatipu Basin 4-wheel drive tour from Queenstown. Cruise along off-road routes toward the Remarkables mountain range — widely used in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Admire panoramic views over Deer Park Heights and the Kawarau Gorge, and then head onward to the historic gold-mining settlement of Arrowtown. Traverse bumpy river crossings along the Arrow River, and pan for gold on the riverbank. Then gaze over the Wakatipu Basin from Coronet Peak en route back to Queenstown.
What to Expect
Following an 8:15a.m. or 1:30p.m. pickup at your central Queensland, Kelvin Heights, Frankton, Arthur's Point, or Fernhill hotel, hop into your 4-wheel drive vehicle, and head out of town to start your 4-hour tour.

This is the perfect tour for those who want the thrills of an off-road adventure, but also want to see Lord of the Rings filming locations. See the Remarkables, which were used as various mountains throughout the trilogy, including the Misty Mountains. Travelling part way up Queenstown hill, get a bird’s-eye view onto Deer Park Heights, which was used for the refugees of Rohan and the Battle of the Wargs movie scenes.

Travelling from The Remarkables viewpoint, head to the Kawarau Gorge where the filming took place for the Argonath or Pillars of the Kings. Leaving the Kawarau Gorge, go to Arrowtown where the loss of The One Ring at Gladden Fields was shot. Near Arrowtown experience a true off-road adventure. Following a historic gold-mining road, cross the river to get to the Ford of Bruinen. At this point you can try your hand at gold panning.

From Arrowtown, travel to the entrance of Skippers Canyon where you will be offered spectacular panoramic views of the Wakatipu Basin. Your tour ends with a drive back to your hotel.

Our guide 'E' was brilliant! Great driver, very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the area. Really felt like he went the extra mile to make sure we had a great time. Would highly recommend!

Amazing views and I haven’t even seen LOTR

We booked this half day tour last minute when a different tour (not same company) was cancelled. What started as a frustrating morning turned out to be a blessing in disguise! I’ve never actually watched Lord of The Rings, so I was a bit skeptical...More

Great tour of LOTR sites

Great half day tour of a number of LOTR sites. Drive was knowledgable and entertaining. Drove up the Arrow river and did some gold panning, and drove down into the shotover gorge. Cost is up there but tour was very good.
