Overview
The Rangitata River is one of the best spots for white water rafting in New Zealand, set against a dramatic gorge. Get your adrenaline pumping on this full-day rafting tour from Christchurch, and tackle the Grade 2 to 5 rapids, including thrilling bends, rocky outcrops, and serene river passes. Lunch, BBQ dinner and hotel pick-up (optional) are included.
What to Expect
Depending on the tour option chosen, either begin your day with pick-up from your central Christchurch hotel between 9-9.30am, or make your own way to the rafting base by 11.30am. Once your group has arrived, tuck into lunch (included) as your instructor takes you through a safety briefing.

After lunch, get suited up in your wetsuit, life jacket and helmet, and head out to the river to get started. Take the time to master basic manoeuvres under the guidance of your instructor, then set out on a thrilling 2- to 2.5-hour rafting adventure. Work together with your team to paddle downstream, tackle the hair-raising rapids and navigate rocky outcrops, and soak up the magnificent scenery of the Rangitata gorge along the way.

Back on dry land, head back to the lodge to warm up with a hot shower and get changed, before sitting down for dinner. After re-fuelling with a hearty BBQ feast (included) and admiring the action shots taken by your photographer (available to purchase), your day finishes around 5-5.30pm, after which you can make your own way back to the city, or enjoy drop-off back at your Christchurch hotel.

Please note: All equipment is provided, but you will need to bring a swimsuit to wear under your wetsuit and a towel. Tours are weather dependent, but run most days from October through to May.

Highlight of our entire NZ trip- really recommend.

Have been rafting before in Argentine, but this was something else. The rapids and setting were amazing. The guide was brilliant- good banter but also appropriately safety conscious. I felt really safe (as safe as one can feel on grade 5 rapids!). I would truly...More

Rangitata Rafts went above and beyond to make the day memorable. They provide all equipment you'll ever need as well as a full safety briefing. Not all went to plan with two of the four rafts overturning (ours included, these things can happen) but the...More

Rafting with Rangitata Rafts was absolutely amazing! It was so much fun! Our guide, Dylan, made sure our boat didn't flip over. That was highly appreciated! We had a nice lunch before and a delicious bbq diner after the rafting! I would highly recommend this...More

Wild ride and beuatiful scenery

This was so much fun and a barrel of laughs! Not all went to plan with 6 of the 7 passengers falling out at 'The Wall' but all were soon back on the raft. Guide Deano was brilliant and the only complaint is that it...More

They don't. There is only a portion of the river which is Grade 5. Even then, I think there is an element of risk. If you prefer a gentler river, try rafting at Hammer Springs. It is about 3 hrs by car or coach north of... More
