Great Explorations that Were Surpassed with Liz
What an incredible day sightseeing in Wellington with Liz. We saw all the sights and had a fabulous commentary from Liz! Lunch was amazing at Cohene’s. The fish and pumpkin risotto and the beef cheeks were to die for - the best meal we have had so far in New Zealand. We learned so much from Liz about the history of Wellington and the surroundings. Don’t give this tour a miss and Liz is an absolute must!

A must for all Lord of the rings fans
We had a real problem getting off the ship. The tour guide/ bus driver waited about 30 mins for us. In the end they had to leave. When we finally got off the ship another guide called the boss. He came and picked us up and drove us to meet our tour. Such a nice man, and what great service. They all went out of their way to help us. The tour was fantastic. The tour guides had a lot of knowledge, he was also fun to be with. The tour was much more than we expected. A must for all Lord of the rings fans.

    The Weta Road
The LofR tour was great even in the rain. Lester, our guide, was very knowledgeable and keen to answer any questions about New Zealand at all. Very glad I chose the full day tour to the various locations and the Weta Workshop tour was excellent. Highly recommend.

    Weta Workshop Rules!
The visit to Weta Workshop and cave was just great - enthusiasm abounds. Could have easily spent two more hours there. The movie sites were a bit underwhelming, but the setting makes up for it. It would have been nice if the driver had more background information and commentary. And making the driver use a bunch of poster-size floppy pictures did not seem optimal. But overall great!

    A great tour around Wellington
A great tour with Explor at Wellington. We were on a cruise and I had booked the tour directly and thought we needed to go into town to pick up the tour, this is because the cruise companies tell people it’s not possible for passengers to walk in the port area, that is NOT true as Explor can pick up at the ship and have a pick up point that we missed (our fault) No matter Richard the owner came into town, picked us up and gave us a tour anyway. A friendly guy who obviously loves his job and is great fun and likes a joke. His local knowledge is top notch. Definitely recommend Explor.Simon & Bev

The Best Tour Operator To Experience Wellington!
We had the most amazing experience with Kevin from Xplor Tours. He was cordial, attentive, knowledgeable and patient. Wellington is just a gorgeous city, a lot to see, so it is important to have a tour operator that is able to properly manage time. We highly recommend Xplor Tours and Kevin when it comes to experiencing Wellington and its surrounding area.

    Great tour of Wellington
We did the half day tour of Wellington and had a great day with Peter our guide. I was a last minute booking and was pleased when I found out they had a spot for us. Our guide was very knowledgeable about Wellington and took us to all the sights we wanted to see. Wellington is a very pretty city which was hard to appreciate if you just stayed in town and didn’t venture out! Also we found out a lot about Wellington and NZ which we wouldn’t have known if we’d done our own travel. At the end of the tour Peter obliged our request to drop us off at the Te Papa Museum which he’d recommended during the tour. It was a great way to finish our day in Wellington. All in all a pleasure to deal with XPlor tours. .

An amazing experience for LOTR fans
We had an amazing morning on the half day LOTR tour, it was cold and drizzly (our favourite weather - felt like home!) but the tour bus was warm and the drives around Wellington were stunning. It was wonderful going on the Weta Cave tour and seeing the filming spots for the movies but it was also amazing to hear Lester's stories about native plants and Maori legends - it made the walks and views that much more immersive. We will definitely be visiting again to fit the full day in!

    Outstanding tour
I don't usually do guided tours... but I cannot recommend this company highly enough! Whilst wandering around Mount Victoria trying to find LOTR sites (much more difficult than you might think to pin down the exact locations!), I had the good fortune to stumble across an Xplor tour led by Stan - he was so friendly and helpful, and pointed me in the direction of their full tours as I wanted to explore LOTR sites outside of Wellington itself. They had no tours running the next day, but the company's owner Richard very kindly took time out of his schedule to take me on a private tour, which was outstanding - we saw Helm's Deep / Minas Tirith (that is, the quarry where they were filmed!), the Gardens of Isengard, Rivendell, part of the river Anduin where the Fellowship travel by boat - and for a small extra fee, we visited two additional sites (Faramir's dream, where he sees Boromir floating down the river, and where Aragorn is revived by his horse after falling from a cliff). Richard was a wonderful host and brought along pictures for the sites which really brought them to life, as well as telling me lots of anecdotes about filming and other tidbits about Wellington as we travelled - we had a genuinely great day out together, and as a massive LOTR fan, it's been one of the highlights of my time in New Zealand. As I said, I don't usually go for guided tours, preferring to explore by myself - but other than Rivendell, which is well signposted, I would have really struggled to find many of the other sites without a guide (Aragorn's cliff, for example, isn't signposted at all and is just down a random footpath behind someone's house!) So if you're keen to get the full Wellington LOTR experience, and want to see all the key filming sites, then I can't recommend Xplor tours highly enough!

The tour consists of a three-hour tour of Wellington and its suburbs. The van is very comfortable and the driver gives an interesting, friendly and at times humorous commentary of the things one can see on the way. The tourists are involved by having some questions asked about general knowledge, they are offered a delicious ice-cream and finally can earn some sweets by answering a few questions about what they saw on the tour. I enjoyed the personal touch, the friendly attitude of the driver and obviously, the interesting things one can see on the way.

As a group of 6 in Wellington for a day stop over on the Queen Elizabeth we took a sight seeing city trip with Richard as our driver/guide. He was absolutely fantastic. Plenty of history on all the sites, friendly, humorous commentary, even handing out gratis ice cream during the trip and a chocolate gift bag at the end. He then dropped us off back at the wharf. We highly recommend Richard's tour for anyone visiting Wellington.

Ray our guide was entertaining and so knowledgeable. Small mini bus so not too many people to get on and off so no hold ups! We had a great tour all around Wellington and learnt a lot even had an ice cream stop! Ray recommends places of interest for after the tour we went to the museum and saw the Gallipoli exhibition well worth it thanks Ray. One point-please read the instructions on where you are picked up from the cruise ship-four people didn’t and travelled into town and we had to go find them which delayed the tour. Very enjoyable trip book it!

I just returned from vacationing in Australia with my 88 year old Uncle. While in Wellington, I booked us a private tour with Richard knowing that my Uncle would have certain limitations while touring due to his age. From the beginning of our tour Richard made it clear that he was willing to alter our itinerary however we needed to in order to benefit my Uncle. He was extremely flexible. On top of that, one of the national parks that we were supposed to visit was closed due to recent, heavy rainfall in the region. Richard came prepared with a back-up plan and this diversion from the original plan ended up being one of my favorite parts of the tour. Richard is an interesting person, is willing to share information about his life and is a great guide around Wellington. If you choose to book a tour with Richard, you will NOT be disappointed!

We did five city tours on this trip around New Zealand and Xplor tours was by far the best! Richard has an obvious love for his city of Wellington, and this shows in the sharing of his local knowledge, and his enthusiasm in 'showing off' his city. His commentaries and relationships with the passengers were warm, friendly, humororus and entertaining. The many personal touches he included in his tour - the hokey pokey ice-cream, the taking of individual and group photos, his staying in communcation with his clients through email and facebook, the gift of appreciation at the end of the trip with a small bag of 'NZ' lollies ... all added to the overall experience. I felt as if I was a valued customer, and he was making every effort to show his appreciation and making my visit to Wellington a memorable one.
I have no hesitation in recording this tour to my friends and relatives.

As a group of 8 adult friends we had such a fun time doing the Wellington City Tour with Richard as our guide.
A few of us had been to Wellington before but he showed us things we had missed previously.
Highly recommended and to top it off, Richard has a wicked sense of humour.
Loved it!

A great tour with driver and guide Richard from xplore tours, very knowledgeable great fun, interacts wit( his guests as well as going the extra mile. We had booked the trip separate to the onboard cruise trips offered ,and was planning to pick up the tour in Wellington city centre. This was because the cruise staff insisted that passengers were not permitted to walk anywhere within the port apart from getting onto the shuttle busses into town, or onto the tours booked on the ship. Thus we missed the pick up that was actually available at the port and went to town. Richard the owner was great though when I called him and he came and picked us up in town and gave us and a few others our own separate trip. As I say it was a good trip of around 2.5 hours and just about long enough to see the main parts of Wellington. I definitely recommend xplore tours if anyone is thinking of taking a shorter tour, although I know xplore also offer longer options too.

Thanks for your great review Simon. Unfortunately the ships make it harder for private tour operators with their instructions to passengers. But glad I was able to retrieve the situation and get you on the tour.

We had a great trip with Richard today. He was very informative and would thoroughly recommend the tour if, like us, are only in Wellington for a short time and want to see the sights. It was a small group and everyone was friendly. Richard was very informative and also surprised us all with a hokey pokey-ice cream each! Thank you so much Richard.

We travelled with two young children and didn't have lot of time in Wellington and hence we selected to do the sightseeing tour.
We are really happy that we did that which gave a good view of the entire city within couple of hours and much better than a hop on hop off tour because Richard stopped at main attractions to take photos etc.
Also he gave lot of information and also it was fun to travel with him.
