Deco City Discoverer 2.5 hour tour departs from the Napier i-Site information Centre beside your shuttle bus stop. We wander down the Marine Parade a jewel in the crown of Napier City pointing out all the points of interest. We leave the city boundary travel South along the coast to our first visit the Celestial Star Compass located on the beach over looking Hawke Bay. We then start to head inland through the rural area of Meeanee and out to the Silky Oak Chocolate Company nestled in among the Orchards. Silky Oak is full of beautiful chocolate of all descriptions, a Pantry Shop, Gift Shop and Cafe that makes very good Coffee, grab one and bring it with you if you wish. We then head back to the edge of Napier into the suburb of Taradale, past Art Deco McDonalds and out to the very grand old Mission Estate winery the oldest winery in New Zealand established in 1851. Enjoy a walk around this historic site, or a sample of their fine wines (Tasting fees apply) and take in the views over the city from their beautiful garden lookout. We commence to head over land that rose up in the 1931 earthquake to the seaside suburb of Westshore, and Ahuriri the original Port of Napier with a photo stop at the beautiful Art Deco building of the former National Tobacco Building. We then head up the Napier hill for fantastic views all over Napier City and the wider Hawkes Bay area before we head down into the heart of our city where we pass many of our beautiful Art Deco buildings and some that survived the 7.8 earthquake of 1931. Finishing off back at the beautiful Marine Parade. It is our pleasure to show you around our unique City. Thanks for joining us.

Back to the past, to the 1930s!
You could feel the whole day program as it was literally our private tour. Our driver did his best to tell everything about the history of the city and the culture of the city, etc.

      Art Deco Bus Napier
Art Deco Bus Hire - We hired Mark and the bus for a 4 hour hire a bit of a ticky tour and lunch at the Puketapu hotel (another recommendation). Mark was fantastic he showed us some lovely sights and was very informative. He had to leave us at lunch to do another tour and Merv was just as friendly and helpful. I would thoroughly recommend using this company we had a fantastic time.

      What a great discovery!
We hired a bus for a half day group tour of a couple of wineries, a brewery and a cider house for a family re-union. Mark our driver was super helpful and accommodating, encouraging us to have a great time, and putting up with our singing (which got progressively better of course...) and our ditty's! Everyone had a fantastic day out and raved about it afterwards.

      Great Tour!
Mark gave us a great, relaxing tour of the city in a very cool car. As we drove through the city every one was looking and waving at us in the classic black taxi car. Great views and conversation. Highly recommend it. Stopped at the Mission winery and a chocolate shop.

      Lovely Art Deco Town
After a shuttle bus run from the port into town we easily found Merv our driver and our bus called Veronica. Merv provided good commentary pointing out key highlights on our tour. Our bus also had a rear viewing platform which was great for taking pictures. A great tour and lovely town.

A wonderful overview of this beautiful city
I booked this shore excursion prior to leaving Australia through the Napier i-Site Visitor Centre. The communication and booking process was excellent and on the day we knew exactly where to go to board the Art Deco Bus for our morning tour. The bus is roomy and comfortable and the tour took us through the city itself, along Marine Parade, then inland passing vineyards and orchards. We made a few interesting stops - at a chocolate factory, Mission Estate Winery etc - and passed by some gorgeous Art Deco architecture, all the while learning about the history and re-emergence of this beautiful city following the devastating earthquake. We were back in plenty of time to catch the shuttle back to our ship.

Deco City Discoverer tour for cruise ship passengers
My wife and I arrived in Napier on a cruise ship at 12 noon and caught the free shuttle to the I-site centre by the waterfront. Outside the centre were booths of tour vendors and we chose the 2.5 hour ‘Deco City Discoverer’ for NZ$55 each. When we left at 1.30 pm, we were the only two passengers on the big bus! The comfortable, air-conditioned Art Deco bus had a unique open deck on the back where you could take photos without the reflection from the glass windows and where there was a speaker so you would not miss any of the full commentary. Mark the bus driver was a delight: very safe and very knowledgeable. We were taken on a tour through the streets of Napier and then were driven down Marine Parade to visit the Waharoa Gateway & Star Compass. We then went via Meeanee and Taradale to the Silky Oak Chocolate factory (free samples) and the Mission Estate Winery. We spent 20 minutes at the Winery, where a wine tasting cost an extra NZ$6 including a souvenir glass. We also saw “The Old Church” and stopped at the beautiful National Tobacco Company Ltd building. Altogether this was a great, good value, tour for first-timers to Napier, especially for cruise ship passengers with limited time to see the highlights. I certainly recommend Mark and the ‘Deco City Discoverer’ tour.

First tour after COVID. Two years since the last cruise ship was in port. Needless to say their were somevery happy people to see us. Not just the tour industry but people came out of their houses and waved.

Excellent tour of the local area and if I had one complaint, it would be the speaker system on the bus, the volume was a little too low. Remeber it was the first tour in two years :)

    The Art Deco was magnicient!

We just returned from this tour. Mark picked us up on the pier promptly and gave a very informative tour of Napier and the surrounding area. He was very helpful offering to take some passengers over to the aquarium after the tour was over. If you have a short time in Napier, I strongly recommend this tour!

This tour exceeded our expectations. Our driver was a wealth of knowledge about Napier and it’s history. A visit to the The Waitangi Regional Park and The Navigating of the stars memorial was very informative. The drive around through agricultural area & orchards where all the apple trees were in full fruit was good. We then went the the Silky Oak Chocolate Factory and got to sample their wares. Following this we went to The Mission Estate Winery for wine tasting and the opportunity to buy wines. Our tour then proceeded through the housing area of Napier & a Lookout at the top and then a local town tour when we had the opportunity to stay in town or go back to the ship. The Art Deco City tour did not disappoint, it was fabulous.

Beautiful countryside with a very knowledgeable tour guide. He explained the concept of art deco to us and pointed out the various architectural styles. He brought us to various points of interest complete with commentary on the history and facts about what we were looking at.

This is the most unorganized tour. No communication frtravel company tried multiple times from Port to contact them. They don't pick up. Goes straight to voice-mail. Promised deco bus and was delivered van type bus .seats were very uncomfortable. Guide didn't use headset, but from front of the seat turned around and screamed the info. He been only there 8 yrs and as he went along made stories. They ask you to be there 15 mins early. But no one to greet you and barely made it on time to pick. Don't waste your money

Hello and thank you for your review on your tour 2nd Feb 2024 Communication for pick up was messaged to you and was very clear as per copy below. Sorry I did not get your phone call the day as I was on Tour. Have to say I am very disappointed as we do try to ensure that everyone has an enjoyable time. From time to time due to operational issues we have used the Mercedes. That was my doing and should have messaged you to advise and allow you to change tour if you wish. Mercedes Sprinter is a well respected tour vehicle. I have checked and the vehicle was at Ship side on time not sure why you consider it was late. I am reviewing the day with Bob and my driver and will ensure we get this correct and avoid any disappointment in the future. Thank you for taking the time to do a review It is important to me to get this right and ensure everyone enjoys their time in Napier Regards Mark Copy of message sent 4th Jan 24 Hello Thank you for your booking We will pick you up from Shipside on the pier (wharf) The Art Deco Bus will arrive at 12.15pm for a 12.30pm departure Look forward to showing you our beautiful City Regards Mark 0276944322 Scofield Mark Jan 4, 2024, 12:52 PM

We arrived late but Mack went out of his way to accommodate us. He drove us around in an old Black London cab which was comfortable. He took me around town and then to the oldest winery in New Zealand. He then drove back to pick up my wife so we could go to a Chocolate Factory and shop.
We were expecting a cruise or Harbour tour given the tittle of the activity but were informed it was an excursion for a cruise ship. I hope the name can be changed in the future.

Mark was a knowledgeable driver. Interesting commentary and history of this beautiful Art Deco city. The architecture is well worth seeing. We enjoyed the wider tour which included agricultural areas and stop at Silky Oak Chocolate shop. His bus is beautifully outfitted in Art Deco style. Thanks for a memorable afternoon.

I took this tour because I was keen to see the Art Deco buildings. In fact the centre is full of these beautifully restored buildings that you don't need the tour for this. The driver/guide explained all about the economy of Napier, the effects of the 1929 earthquake, and reclamation of land. We saw a Maori sculpture ring, fruit farms, and stopped at a tearoom.

My wife and I pre-booked this before leaving Australia and to our surprise we were on the bus with only three other passengers - heaps of room in the air conditioned bus! Mark the owner/driver was a great bloke and very knowledgeable to the region and NZ. The Art Deco bus had an open deck on the back where you could stand on such a beautiful day and take photos whilst on the move and still hear the commentary. The sights included the historic buildings of Napier, the Waharoa Gateway & Star Compass, Silky Oak Chocolate factory, the Mission Estate Winery and the old National Tobacco Company Ltd building. This was a great value tour for being our first visit to Napier, especially as cruise ship passengers with limited time to see the wonderful highlights. Mark timed our return to the i-Site visitor centre with perfection before the local streets were shutdown for the city's Christmas Parade. We recommend Mark and "Veronica" and the ‘Deco City Discoverer’ tour but note he does have "Belle" too. Thanks Mark for a wonderful tour.

This was a lovely tour in a Art Deco Bus made to look like it was from the 1930’s. After an informative drive around Napier and the surrounding area our driver, Merv, took us to a chocolate factory then on to one of the oldest wineries in the region, Mission Wines, There was a $10 extra charge but we’ll worth it, the wines were delicious!
I would recommend this tour to those who want to see the area in the Art Deco style!
