24 hour hop on/off, very convenient.
I booked the 24 hour hop on/ off with my 2 teenagers, arriving in Auckland via cruise ship. The bus drivers and staff were very friendly and knowledgeable. We did both the red and blue routes, which covered all Auckland had to offer, very convenient. Please note the bus travels in one direction only, so plan your hop on/off destinations, especially if you are time restricted as we were. The buses were modern and clean. I highly recommend this service you certainly get to see all Auckland has to offer and value for money

    Ferry Good.!
We always visit the lovely Devonport when in Auckland. Reminds us of Salcombe in Devon but I do not know why. The ferry ride is so convenient and a must do. Enjoy

    Not very safe
I would say this is an unsafe way to travel. Twice on the first day, after the bus stopped at a hop off, riders on the upper level got up and proceeded to the stairs, only to have the bus leave the location without warning. The second day when I got on and went to the upper level, the bus started moving before I was seated. Only once on the hop on hop off was the bus at 30 minutes, that was end of the day when they were all heading back. During the day was 45 minutes once and over an hour on the second day. The on bus narration is all digital now, so very repeatitive and no interaction. Repeated the safety slogan after every stop even when no one got on the bus.

    A complete scam.
An absolute joke! They say buses every 30 minutes but we’ve been waiting a good 20 minutes and just been told it’s at least another 30 minute wait. We wanted the open top bus but have now also been told they don’t have that many so may not even get an open top seat. NO ONE told me about either the lengthy wait time or the lack of buses because if they had I wouldn’t have booked this nonsense ‘tour’. It’s been nothing more than a waste of our time.

Worst city bus tour I have ever done
Do not recommend this. Very badly organised! Given wrong info times to pick up bus 2 times so ‘just missed it’ each time! Finally got on bus but not open top as advertised. Hot day so not nice! Commentary failed at point were it tells you the bus changes to longer route so stuck on bus longer than expected. Driver ‘Rich’ was extremely rude and abrasive. He was a horrible man and shouldn’t be working with the general public.

Easy way to see the city.
A great way to see the Auckland CBD without walking. A good selection of stops and we got off at Kelly Tarltons and the Sky City Casino. Good commentary with lots of information. Well sign posted drop off and pick up places and friendly drivers.

    Great Tour With Interesting Stops
We joined the tour at 10am and took the last bus back at 4pm. Did the full circle first up then got off at the museum and didn’t leave until the last bus was due. A comprehensive tour with a number of options.

Good value way to see many key sites
We only had time for a 1-day pass (I would recommend getting a 2-day ticket but enjoyed the knowledgeable commentary and very friendly, helpful staff and drivers.

    Covers the highlights
If you're only in a city for one day these sort of buses are a great way to see the highlights and this didn't disappoint. Covers the highlights and if you start early enough plenty of time to hop off and do the sights.

    Auckland Explorer plus Waiheke Island
This is one of the best hop - on hop - off buses that I have ever used. For an small fee I was able to add Waiheke Island which included the ferry return admission as well as the Waiheke Explorer hop - o hop - off buss as well. It was an incredable value. It made for three days because you could use the add on following your 48 hour pass. It was lovely to get out of the busy city to enjoy wineries, and/ or walks on this beautiful Island. Highly recommended.

Comfortable bus to See more of Auckland
The bus was comfortable and the staff were great. The only trouble we had was when the bus changed from the Blue line to the red line, it was a bit confusing, however the staff did try to let people know and there were information sheets on where you stopped and when you changed over. In a short time we were able to see more of Auckland in a short time.

Perfect inexpensive way to get around Auckland
We decided to use a hop on hop off bus to maximise what we could see in a day visit to Auckland. And it worked great, buses had some taped commentary giving useful information about the area as we went along. Unlimited stops and there seemed to be plenty of the yellow buses. Recommended.

    Well organised and comfortable ride
We were a bit nervous after reading some of the reviews but this was all unfounded as we thoroughly enjoyed this trip. It was a very hot day and the bus was comfortably air conditioned. Huge windows upstairs and even windows along the ceiling meant we missed nothing. We could not have ridden an open topped bus in the heat. The buses ran every 20 minutes and were spot on time. There were two routes, blue and red, and they changed automatically without you having to get off. The driver came upstairs twice to clearly explain how it worked. The commentary was clear and informative. The free ferry across to Devonport was a plus. A beautiful place to wander the shops or walk along the tree lined beach with dramatic volcanic rocks strewn about. Plenty of place to eat or get a drink and the people were incredibly friendly. A fabulous day.

    24 hour??
It's a convenient way to see parts of the city but we were amazed/puzzled that the service ended at 4.30pm - so where's the 24-hour service? The people are very friendly, especially the wonderful sales team outside the Sky Tower. The buses are clean and the commentary more than adequate.

Purchased the 48 hr package to include ferry to Waiheke Island and it worked out perfect for our plans. The Waiheke ferry ticket is good for up to 24 hrs after the HOHO ticket expires. Read the fine print. Day one started at the Auckland Museum and learned this is where the buses change routes. We went to Mt Eden then back on to return to the museum to change to red route as Mt Eden was on blue route. The driver stopped at the museum and told passengers if you are going on red to sit tight as he was changing routes. Day two we used the Devenport ferry checking out this island then back to Auckland. Day three we used the Waiheke Island ferry ticket. The buses do not have headsets but speakers. I prefer this as in the past on HOHO in other cities have had problems with headsets and sound.

We found the Explorer bus an excellent way to see Auckland. Would recommend the 48 hour pass if you have the time to really see everything properly. The drivers were friendly and the bus appeared almost magically whenever we walked to the bus stop!
My top tip would be to check the port schedule for cruise ship movements when planning your sightseeing itinerary, which avoids crowds nicely - worked really well for us.

Yes I bought a 25 hour ticket for the bus. It was different from the bus in Sydney in that the sound system wasn't in use. I wasn't offered any ear buds so I know the mgmt didn't intend to use the system. The brochure that was available was very detailed and gave you a pretty good idea of where you were and what you were seeing, One thing I thought was interesting about the route was that at the War Memorial/Museum the bus changed routes. By that I mean it went from a red to a blue route(?) so if you were planning to change routes and see a different part of the city you just stayed on the bus you were on. But if like me you spent an hour in museum (great place by the way) when you went to get on the but you had to be careful, was it just arriving and a blue soon to be red or a red soon to be blue? Not a big problem as you simply asked the driver, but you need to know that you need to ask. Oh and I remember the ticket was good for 24 hours. I stayed at the SkyCity Hotel, and the bus line had a ticket stand outside, the busses stopped there every 30 min or so. And in addition to the Museum I also stopped at the Mall for an hour or so. I didn't take advantage of the Ferry pass.

I have said in previous posts that I prefer to post positive reviews and if I have something negative to say that I take it direct to the company. Unfortunately our experience today was poor and I have Emailed the company but have not had a reply.
This is supposed to be a hop on hop off tour but clearly far too many tickets had been sold.
We spent the entire tour on a overcrowded bus which regularly was forced to leave passengers at stops as there was no room. At one stop passengers could not be collected which included a group and included 1 gent in a wheelchair who was left behind in the rain
We felt that we couldn’t “hop off” the bus because we didn’t feel that it was likely that there would be any room on buses later to take us home.
When I complained I was told that the company had 20 buses operating and had plenty of capacity and we should have got off the bus if we wanted to because another bus would come along later with more room but honestly that would have been a big risk based on what we saw.
I can see how difficult operating today would have been with 2 cruise liners in town an as well as roadworks to make things harder. My suggestion would have been to allocate tickets starting at different times ie 10.00 am, 11.00 etc so that the complete bottleneck which occurred could be controlled.
Lastly, whilst the staff were polite they were not prepared to acknowledge that a problem existed and gave me little confidence that the problem will be fixed.

Kia Ora AllisonM717 I do apologise to hear that you felt as though you could not get off your bus due to the bus being overcrowded meaning you did not want to miss out on a bus returning back to the starting point, our buses do run every 20 minutes however as you said roadworks and traffic can cause minor delays. We currently have a high volume of emails in our inbox, which means that it can take some time to hear back from us, we will investigate this matter as soon as possible and get back to you. We typically like the hop on hop off bus system when visiting a new city as it helps to get a good overview. We boarded the 1 st bus of the day intending to ride the full circuit and then get off at those stops that we wished to explore further. We purchased the tickets for the Kelly Tarlton experience and the tower in combo ( which was at a reasonable price).
When the bus reached the War Museum, it changed from being a red line bus to a blue line bus and anyone wanting to stay on red line had to get off and get on another bus. We then had to wait for this bus to be cleared to go onward. We made the rest of the circuit uneventfully ( except for witnessing an argument between 2 of the company's bus drivers).
The narration documented that the buses were running every 15 minutes that day. We got off at the Kelly Tarleton Antarctic experience and toured that facility. We just missed the bus when exiting the facility (watched it drive off so know the timing) and waited literally 50 minutes before the next bus arrived. There was no explanation from the driver as to why the delay, even when questioned. ( he just waved us on) and this bus was not equipped with wifi.
This was an overall disappointing experience.

Well run buses of this type are always a great way to get an introduction to a city, especially when one has limited time. This was one of the better run Hop-ons. Unfortunately a situation beyond their control (major roadwork) made getting to the first stop challenging and a longer walk than we expected, but all of our interactions with the Explorer employees were positive. The bus was clean, ran on time, and was comfortable, so we were very pleased with our experience.

Hop on Hop off buses are a great way to see the highlights of a city and this was no different. Auckland is undergoing some major renovation/roadworks of the foreshore and so the bus could not go down to this area - but the renos will be great when completed. We had a very warm day and it was great to sit in the air con and listen to the commentary, get off when we wanted to and then back on again.
Great when you are too tired to walk.

Perhaps because we had such a great experience with the Sydney (Australia) Big Bus hop-on, hop-off tour, we expected too much from this one in Auckland, New Zealand. Clearly, this bus service needs to have more busses in service because we had to wait at least 30 minutes for the next one to hop back on. At one stop, some passengers complained they'd been waiting for more than an hour and, during our wait there, we had to suffer listening to a supervisor repeatedly telling drivers that one driver was to pull in at his next scheduled stop, tell all the passengers to get off, then go to a different stop (empty) and have another driver to take over so the first could go home. She repeated all of this at least 5 times for all of us to listen. Also unlike the service in Sydney, this one broadcasts the narration over loudspeakers and only in English. This seems to encourage those who are not interested in the narration or who cannot understand it because they don't speak English well to converse amongst themselves loudly enough to be heard over the narration. Of course, as a result, we couldn't hear the narration ourselves. Sydney offered headsets we plugged into boxes at our seats and select one of a number of languages for the narration. In Auckland, we didn't get our money's worth and would not recommend this company's service to anyone else.

This is a good hop on hop off service spanning all the major sites within Auckland.

We were on a cruise around New Zealand and this service was significantly cheaper than the cruise ship offering.

The only confusing point was when you arrived at the war memorial which is the stop to change from the red bus to the blue bus all that happened was the driver changed a sign from red to blue, on 2 occasions we got off the bus just to board the same bus again. However, this was no great issue just a bit strange.

To be fair, we took this bus just as COVID 19 restrictions were going into place. Buses weren't running nearly as often as advertised, which we totally understood. It just would have been helpful if they had updated their website and/or phone information line. The bus went everywhere we wanted to go and we were able to get out and see the city for a reasonable price. Sit on the upper level if you want to hear the automated commentary. The engine noise on the lower level made it extremely hard to hear, even when sitting directly under a speaker.
