      Poor representation in Sam Baxter
Poor experience for a Mentawai surf trip all the way from South Africa. Only to be ruined by Sam Baxter as the representative from Mojo. Do not recommend.

      Enjoyable trip
5 night stay spot x surf camp Really great team super helpful and supportive throughout lessons!! Did five lessons and only 2 (one each) pictures sadly which we had to pay for a package of them and wasn’t worth paying for.

      Good camp to learn surfing
Overall it was a good experience with some space for improvement on some aspects. The instructors (especially Ruben) are very communicative and point out all the important steps when you learn how to surf. On the first day there were only 2 instructors but they still managed to give everyone individual feedback on how to improve which is very nice. On the second day there were 3 instructors so smaller groups and more tips and help. If you listen well to them you can learn the basics very fast. Big thanks to Ruben for the great mentorship and guiding us through the big waves. The photographer also did a great job! On the other hand I was a bit disappointed. I booked the surf camp with YHA Hostel, paying 300$ for 2 nights and 3 days of surfing. When I received the confirmation mail it said 2 nights and 2 days of surfing. I contacted both companies and they were both pointing their fingers at each other. Mojo changed their pricing starting from April 2024 but it is still March so a bit weird that I didn't get the old package. YHA explained that it was 2 days of surfing but 3 days of activities. There were no activities on the first day so I felt a bit betrayed. I understand that its YHA's responsibility to be aware of the package they are selling but Mojo should have communicated this with them as well. Overall a good experience even though I wouldn't do the surf camp again but just take the surf classes as the instructors are amazing.

Avoid at all costs - Unsafe and Ignored by Instructors
I wouldn’t recommend Mojo Surf to anyone. We were taken to a beach with about 30 students and 3 instructors. There was a 20 minute stretching session and then 15 minutes of discussing in small groups any concerns and goals for the day. We then went into the water, where the waves were big and a few times I got knocked down so hard I ended up with some blood on my face. One of the instructors went off and surfed on his own the entire time - genuinely never saw him interact with a student. The two other instructors were trying their best but with 30 students and only 2 hours, I was never once spoken to or given advice. I ended up feeling incompetent and also like it was unsafe - they would not have noticed if anyone was getting hurt, and thus decided to spend the last 30 minutes of the lesson sitting on the sand. Wish I could have my money back as I learned nothing, felt ignored by all instructors, felt unsafe and did get hurt, and frankly got put off from surfing. I had previously done a lesson with a different surf school in Byron Bay and had a 10000x better experience, with one instructor for 3-4 students.

      Excellent day surfing!
The 1/2 day surfing lesson was brilliant I would highly recommend it, we were picked up from our hostel which was wake up in Byron bay, we were taken to the arts hostel where we changed shuttle buses which had the surf boards attached, the staff were very friendly and made everyone feel welcome, we got to the beach which was about a 20 minute drive, we immediately come down to the beach and started on with our surf lesson where we were told about the health and safety as well as practising our surfing technique before actually surfing, once we was in the water we had loads of help and the waves were brilliant! We were surfing for about an hour which was more than enough time, when our lesson finished we went back up to the bus and was taken straight to our hostel which was very helpful, a great day and couldn’t recommend it anymore!

Old equip, little quality time, young unfocused instructors
+ Great location to learn how to surf + Good concept where everyone in the crew knew what they would do + Instructors liked teaching - Instructors insecure when giving instructions (everything was a joke) - Lots of focus on drinking - Instructors had focus on eachother (sometime instead of helping) - More help was given to attraktive and young women - First day: more help, 5:th day: no help (you were forgotten)—> 1-2 lessons I guess was worth - Boards and outfit were really old (same with the bus who took you to the surf place) - Long waiting for the bus to pick you up after lessons were done - Only had foamboards availible to try - Little time with the instructors (large group) Had booked the living also, but there were no way I could stay there (awful place) so changed and got no refound.

      Great Instructors
I booked the 4 day/4 night Surf Camp and had an incredible experience. The surf instrutor crew they have is amazing. I'm an intermediate surfer and I was pleasantly surpriced how they accommodated for me. Most of the campers are beginner surfers but they asked about my experience and was able to have an instructor work with me at my level rather than put me in with the beginner crew. All of the instructors were genuinly nice and just great people in general. Thomas and Conor were always at a high level of froth (stoke). Sophia was a great instructor that gave me a lot of great things to work on. Nat (sp?) was extremely accomodating on Chrismas Day and was able to lend me a board on Christmas Day when there were no Surf Camps that day. I had a blast at The Pass. I like their structure of teaching a lot. First day/first timers go in one group and get the basics. The first timers who've gone through the first day, then go into another group where they give additional, more advanced instruction. Great way to have people progress. I enjoyed that they took us to different locations each day to be able to try different spots. Highly recommended.

DON'T LOOK ANY FURTHER......... THESE ARE THE GUYS!!!
From the moment we booked it until the end of the surf lesson have been nothing but AMAZING!!!! We came up on a long work weekend and wanted to see parts of Byron that we hadn't already seen. Nat took us out of the main town and gave us a bit of a tour of the surrounding areas and then we went to a beach where we were the only surfers. Great company, great people and I couldn't recommend them highly enough. We will definitely we coming on another trip when we get back up to Byron!!

Memorable and all rounder fun experience
Nat was a legend and a super chill local. Showed us the best spots to surf away from crowds. Also showed us some lookouts and gave us tips for things to see around town. Made the experience so memorable. We were two beginners that were able to ride plenty of waves. Deffo recommend Mojo!!

Best Learn To Surf Experience EVER
Jimmy was a super experienced and passionate surfer, and his knowledge was excellently translated into his exceptional ability as an instructor. Jimmy had us standing on most waves because his instructions were incredibly clear and he had a great eye for fixing the mistakes in our stances, where we were positioned on the board, the best way for us to get up depending on our height etc etc. In that particular way he was super helpful in imbuing genuine knowledge about surfing that you can carry forward if learning to surf is a serious long term goal. Other than that, Jimmy was a super kind dude who was great for a yarn in the troopy. His enjoyment of surfing was palpable, and it set such a great tone. At the end of it all my girlfriend and I had loads of fun, learnt heaps about surfing and absolutely walked away thinking it was worth the money. We're already referring Mojo's private tour to friends and family who we know have plans to head to Byron. We can't wait to be back again !

Best surf school in Byron shire
Absolute highlight of our trip! We've been on other surf lessons but we were standing up far more with this one which was really fun! In addition to the surfing they take you to a beautiful big beach (which we pretty much had to ourselves) where they 4WD you along to find the perfect spot for the day. Our instructor Nat was super friendly and funny, and had really helpful instruction and adjusted it to our needs. He really made the experience memorable both in and out of the surf, and next time we're up this way I'm sure we'll book with him again if we can. Thanks so much Mojosurf!
