Overview
Get up close with Hawaii’s graceful manta rays during this 4-hour nighttime snorkel experience along the Kona coast with a small group. Watch these gentle giants as they swoop and dive for plankton just below the surface during their evening feeding. An on-board manta naturalist from the University of Hawaii, along with a Red Cross-certified lifeguard, ensure an informative and safe experience.
What to Expect
Board your boat at Honokohau Harbor in the late afternoon, allowing you to reach the manta snorkeling site just in time for sunset. You’ll get a short introduction to the feeding habits of these wondrous creatures from your on-board naturalist as you travel to the snorkel site.

Once you arrive, grab your snorkel gear and get ready to experience this one-of-a-kind natural phenomenon. Snorkeling is optional, so those who choose to remain on board are free to enjoy the sunset. Those who choose to snorkel will jump in the water and grab onto a ‘light board,’ which helps attract plankton to its glowing surface. A certified Red Cross ocean lifeguard will be nearby to help in the unlikely event there are any issues.

Soon the mantas will begin their aquatic ballet, swooping and diving through the water as they feed on the plankton attracted to this site. When your snorkel time is up, head back to your original starting point. You’ll leave your trip with unforgettable memories of this unexpected natural phenomenon, plus complimentary photos of your experience.

My family and I did the sunset snorkeling trip which involved snorkeling at a location 20 minutes from the harbor. The sunset view was beautiful. After dark, manta rays came to feed on plankton. We saw many rays, some which came within inches of us....More
