Travel up Mauna Kea for a small-group sunset and stargazing tour by luxury 4WD van. Leave the off-road drive to the pros, and ride from Kona or Waikoloa to a historic Hawaiian ranch for a picnic dinner. Continue to the Big Island's tallest peak for sunset, then use powerful telescopes to observe constellations from Mauna Kea Visitor Information Station. Hear commentary from your guide, and keep warm with the provided jackets and hot chocolate.
What to Expect

Meet your guide at a central location in Kailua-Kona or Waikoloa, then relax in the deluxe 4WD van as your small group heads to a ranch at the base of Mauna Kea.

At the ranch, sit down for a hot picnic-style dinner (sample menu under Itinerary below). After dinner, your guide provides a warm jacket with hood to help keep you warm at the Mauna Kea summit. Return to the van for the ascent to the summit, learning from your guide about the Big Island's natural and cultural history along the way.

When you reach the summit, enjoy views of the sunset, Mauna Loa, the Haleakala volcano on Maui, and other landmarks. Then drive down to the Mauna Kea Visitor Information Station at 9,000 feet (2,743 meters), home to more than a dozen international observatories that draw scientists from around the world.

Your guide sets up a telescope and provides an astronomy lesson as you star gaze. Stay warm with hot drinks and dessert before returning to Kona at the end of your tour.

Star gazing

We went on this tour with Justin. He was very knowledgeable & extremely friendly. He knew our names immediately. The views of the sunset were spectacular. The star gazing wasn’t quite as cool, but perhaps the moon was the problem. They aren’t kidding when they...More

My partner and I did this on our last night on The Big Island, and it was one of the highlights of our trip. Our guide, Hiraldo, was friendly and very knowledgeable. The food was delicious too. We went all the way to the summit...More

Probably the best tour I've been on!

On Oct 12, 2018, I was a passenger in a van driven by Joel, the guide on the Summit & Stars tour, who took us up Mauna Kea to the telescope site. I am a reasonably well-informed amateur astronomer, but Joel's knowledge of the field...More

An excellent, but slightly physically difficult adventure. Do this!

We booked this trip a couple weeks before our arrival in Hawaii. Apparently during certain times of the year, it can book up months in advance. It was worth it. Here is my summary of the experience. Our guide was Jason, who was just fantastic....More

Incredible stars and sunset!

The four of us are frequent visitors to Hawaii and had always wanted to go to the summit of Mauna Kea. Hawaii Forest and Trail, with Jason as our guide, helped us get there. Jason was so knowledgable about Hawaiian culture-especially how they used the...More

yes, this was for the Big Island, I'm not sure what Maui has to offer, other than a sunrise tour on top Haleakala
