About
Given its geographical location, contrasting coastal and inland terrain steeped in ancient tradition, some would say that the North West of Ireland is truly the jewel in Ireland’s crown. Derry (or “Doire”) derived from the Gaeilge language word meaning “Oak” is a vibrant city located on the River Foyle in this region. With an abundance of historical landmarks to explore, you will be immersed in its lamentable past while attesting and embracing its transition to an energetic and dynamic city full of flavours and steeped in culture. The bordering County Donegal is a short 3km from the city. On this tour we explore elements of both.

- X5049CQmarkm0 contributionsA Second Wonderful Day Exploring Donegal CountyThe Coast and Castles tour was our second day tour with Joe. We enjoyed the South Donegal tour so much and were excited about traveling with Joe again on this tour. Joe picked us up in Donegal Town and before heading out, we pulled off to see the most incredibly carved, large Celtic Cross. Second stop was to be Grianan Aileach, an ancient stone fort, built up on a hill with an incredible 360 degree view of the beautiful surrounding landscape. The fort itself is so unique and the scenery has to be seen to be believed. From there it was an interesting drive, with many twisty roads, to reach the Fanad Lighthouse. The lighthouse if beautifully maintained and has incredible views out to Malin Head and the Ocean. They have a really cool virtual reality film about the sinking of the HMS Saldanha, which crashed off the coast. You can climb the stairs up to the top to see the views. From the lighthouse it is a bit of a drive to Glenveagh Nation Park, so we stopped for a view of Doe Castle from across the lake, so that we would have plenty of time to see the Glenveagh Castle and some of its gardens. The Castle and the views from it and around the gardens are well worth seeing, again fascinating history. Thanks again to Joe for a second fantastic day exploring Donegal, this time the north and central part of the County. More people really need to see the hidden gems of Donegal County!Written 25 October 2024
- X5049CQmarkm0 contributionsWonderful Day Exploring the Coast of South DonegalWe had a wonderful day with Joe on the South Donegal Tour as our driver/guide/friend; full of history, folklore, amazing scenery, seascapes and landscapes and craic. He shared his knowledge and many stories, making stops along the way to share the beautiful county of Donegal with us. We visited Donegal Abbey, Killeybegs Harbour, the Slieve League Cliffs, where we saw a rainbow (we actually saw 5 that day) and the Glencolmcille Folk Village Museum. All were very interesting and Joe's knowledge and stories brought them to life. It was nice being able to drive right to the top of the Slieve League Cliffs as it is a long walk up and it was a blustery day up there! We are so happy that Joe was available to spend the day with us, we now have a new friend in Ireland! Thanks so much Joe, until we meet again!Written 25 October 2024
- ConnDavid140 contributionsTour of a LifetimeWe couldn't have asked for a better guide to kick off our experience in Donegal. This was our second trip to Ireland, but first to Donegal, and Joe made the experience so fun and very rich in Irish history. No matter where we went (Donegal Abbey, Donegal Castle, Glencolmcille Folk Village, Slieve League Cliffs, Joe knew everything (and everyone) and has made me dig further into my Irish roots since we came back (the O'Connell Dynasty, The Plantations, The Annals of Ireland.) We wanted the real version of Donegal and all the Irish history we could absorb and we got it so thank you Joe, you are awesome. We would highly recommend Chieftain Tours and will look to engage them again, when we return.Written 9 September 2024
- MimMinnesota0 contributionsExperience Authentic Ireland! This experience is a five star WOW! As we toured the beautiful countryside, Joe took us on a memorable journey of Ireland's history, traditions and folklore. We learned plenty of facts and figures, but even more, we loved the stories that made the past come alive. The day was filled with adventures exploring the ruins of the abbey in Donegal and the breathtaking cliffs of Slieve League, visiting a local weaver’s artisan studio, a secluded windswept beach, a quaint folk village, and so much more. We ended the day with a deeper appreciation for the Irish people, their music, language and culture. Thank you, Joe!Written 3 September 2024

- Pilgrim4840 contributionsBrilliant experienceThis was an amazing experience, that we booked during a cruise ship visit. The music and dancing was brilliant, and the hosts and performers were really friendly and welcoming. I’d recommend this for any visitors to Killybeggs.Written 27 July 2024
- hishdh0 contributionsPrivate TourBooked a private tour around Donegal in search of relatives. Joe Greene proved a highly informed guide through Donegal who went well out of the way in search of sites associated with family who immigrated in the 17th century. After family search spent a most pleasant day touring ancient ruins, Columbkille sites, and into Derry. Joe was totally open to all suggestions and did everything possible to make the day memorable. The car was new and very comfortable. If you value personal service and local knowledge, Chieftain Tours is perfect for you.Written 20 July 2024
- sdhey_al0 contributionsComprehensive tourOur tour guide Joe was extremely knowledgeable of the history and areas we visited. The amount of time at each destination was appropriate. We traveled in style in a private luxury passenger van. Highly recommend 10/10!Written 17 July 2024

- davidmI3894GL0 contributionsExcellent experience with Chieftain Tours!Joe Greene of Chieftain Tours is simply outstanding! He is gregarious, funny, smart and very creative! We had a personal tour of sites in Donegal and Northern Ireland. He speaks Irish and seems to know everyone! Very knowledgeable. If you are in search of a challenging walking tour of Ireland's sites, Joe is #1 ! He easily climbed up steep inclines at the Slieve League Cliffs and the Giant's Causeway which made me jealous! I strongly recommend him if you want an interesting, informative and engaging tour experience. He can customize a tour to fit your interests.Written 30 May 2024
- Onita180 contributionsTour of South DongealWe had Joe as our tour guide for South Dongeal. Joe was very knowledgeable, he knew the history of Ireland and you saw his passion about Ireland as it showed in all the places we visited. He also spoke to the native language of Gaeilge which was a plus as we got to experience his interactions with the locals! The tour was “NOT scripted” as Joe related personally to everything he told us. Joe was very adaptable as we started late due to travels and he also made time in the schedule to take us to the prettiest beach in Ireland. Additionally, we loved our experience at Slieve League (Europe’s highest Sea Cliffs). We thought the Slieve League Cliffs are so much better than the Cliffs of Moher! We would definitely hire Joe again!Written 23 May 2024

- MeganR80 contributionsGreat Guides and ExperiencesJoe and Maureen were amazing - knowledgeable, easy going, and SO patient with the very challenging group of non-listeners/non-readers. It would have been miserable to be stuck with those folks on most excursions, but Joe and Maureen kept things going so we all had a good time. The mini bus is really nice and allows the tour to drive all the way to the top of Sligh Lough…bigger buses have to have guests transfer to a shuttle or walk. They somehow arranged things with the Rusty Mackerel to have everyone order and be served in record time, and the food was excellent. The monastery and castle were great and very well explained as well. We’ve been on many cruises to many places, and this was among the best excursions we’ve ever done!Written 11 May 2024
- Z136CElisag0 contributionsA delight! We recently stopped over in Killybegs and decided to go see the music show. It was a short 10min walk from our ship to the center of town, where the venue was located. The venue is in a nice room in the local hotel and is fully accessible which was important to us. The show itself was great with some traditional Irish music as well as a ballad singer and some great Irish dancers. After the show, we had a coffee in a nearby cafe which was suitable named "Ahoy!" Bus tours are not usually our thing, so this was a welcomed treat. Would recommend.Written 22 April 2024
- Quest889510 contributionsFabulous EntertainmentThis was a wonderful experience, the music was fantastic, powerful ballads by such a great singer, the dancers were amazing and the location of the venue, the Tara Hotel was perfect, only 10 minute walk from the harbor. I would definitely recommend it.Written 17 April 2024

We had the great fortune of having Joe as our tour guide for a second day of exploring the amazing sites and history near Donegal, Ireland. Traveling the Wild Atlantic Way, we explored many places including Grianan of Aileach, Doe Castle, Glenveagh National Park, Glenveagh Castle, and more! Once again, Joe was so skilled at sharing the history of the locations. Why they were important at the time and today. Not to mention, he to excellent photos of us and the incredible views so we could have them as a reminder of our incredible day. Chieftain Tours provided us with a few amazing days during our time spent around Donegal and we sincerely appreciated the stories, history and the skilled driving to get us to all of these wonderful places.
Joe and this tour were exceptional! Amazing history, stories, and incredible views. Learning about the people and places really provided the experience we were looking for. We were able to get lost in the locations and imagine what it would have been like to live back in those times… It was a transformational experience. Thank you, Joe and Chieftain Tours, for the education, memories, humor, and wonderful sights.

Our first time in Ireland was made a wonderful journey by Joe, we provided him a blank slate and he crafted a wonderful overview of the history of his homeland which he clearly loves. The scenery, the people , the music, Joe used all of these to weave an unforgettable tapestry of memories for us.
If you are fortunate enough to have him as your guide, listen to his stories, give him your time and you will be well rewarded.

My husband and I are deeply interested in historical sites of all kinds. Joe came up with a day tour of Donegal that knocked our socks off! We saw all of the highlights of St. Columb's monasteries in the region, including Ray Church, the monastery at Garten, and the place of St. Columba's birth. He wove in historical political storytelling into his religious stories and we came away with a profound appreciation for so much than we understood before. He really went out of his way to satisfy our needs and we are so deeply grateful to him for a wonderful tour!
