Get outside the city for a better chance of seeing the northern lights
Round-trip transportation from Tromso included
What to expect
Your tour begins with an evening pickup from the center of Tromso and a short journey to the reindeer camp. Upon arrival, meet your Sámi guide and the reindeer. Under supervision, you can feed the reindeer. Afterward, head into the lavvu (tent) for a delicious 3-course dinner. Over your meal, your guide introduces you to the culture and history of the Sámi, indigenous people of Northern Europe, and demonstrates the joik (traditional form of song). One your appetite has been sated, head outside to look for the northern lights—far from the light pollution of the city; you are in a prime viewing spot. After experiencing this magical light show, bid your hosts farewell and jump back into the vehicle for the return trip to Tromso. Your tour concludes with a late evening drop-off back at the departure point.

Great Experience
Feb 2020
We had a great time at the Reindeer Camp. We could feed them and take photos with them. Unfortunately the meal was pretty simple and some things were not very tasty. The stories of the Sami were pretty interesting and the people were very friendly.
We did not do the sledding, because of the reviews we read before. They said that the sledding was pretty short (and way too expensive for that) and that's exactly what we were seeing.
Fortunately, we were lucky enough to see the Northern Lights there. That definitely was the highlight of the evening.
In sum, it was a great experience (but a bit expensive).

Just ok
Dec 2019 • Couples
The experience was ok but they booked way too many people for where we went (two coach buses) so it didn’t feel the way it was shown on the picture. Too crowded! Also, the title says chance of seeing northern lights and this was not even mentioned throughout the tour. I know it depends on the weather to see the northern lights but nobody addressed it even. This was totally misleading on the title. If you want to see the northern lights, find a tour that says it is about chasing them and not this one as it isn’t the focus. Food was just fine, light meal. They could have provided a fish option as vegetarian stew didn’t have much in it and I don’t eat deer meat so that was my only option.

There were people who did rein deer sledding as well and I had not idea it was even an option when I booked it. It should have been provided as an option. All of a sudden some people got orange bracelets and when I asked I was told I didn’t book it. Well, I wish I had known!

The culture experience with Sami people were really good and feeding the rein deer was a lot of fun. These are the only reasons I gave three stars and not one.

Overall, it was just fine and nothing impressive. I didn’t see going above and beyond for anything and I felt let down for a few things that I wish I had known before (how big the group was, not even trying to see northern lights, rein deer sledding option). Think you can find other packages for activities that are more clearly defined.

Thank you for taking your time to review us. We will use the feedback to improve our services. It is a pity to hear that there were things that ruined your experience with us. What was the company you booked the tour with? On all the websites, we provide information about all the activities that we have. And even if you did not book additional activities i.e. sledding in advance, you can book it straight at at the camp, if there is availability. The weather in the North is unpredictable, as well as the Northern Lights, so we cannot promise that you will see them. But there is a high chance you will encounter them during our evening tours, that is why it is mentioned in the title. As for the meals, we are sorry that you did not find a suitable option for you - we always try to meet all of our customers' wishes, which now mainly are either regular with meat (reindeer) or vegetarian. You came during the high season, when there are a lot of guests coming from all over the world. March is rather a better time for a more chill visit. We hope that we could change your mind about another visit to our camp. We would appreciate another chance to turn your experience around. Please feel free to reach us directly to our email.

Worthwhile Trip
Had a really great time last night at the Sami Camp, I got to spend as much time with the Reindeer as I wanted as I wasn’t interested in the Sledding, I ended up going through 3 buckets of Reindeer food by the time I had finished outside with them! The meal was lovely, 1st time I’ve had Reindeer Stew (needed abit of seasoning for my taste but not everyone has the same taste) and then we were lucky enough to get not 1 but 2 viewings of the Northern Lights while we were there! All finished off with a with a educational Sami talk, looking through the items they carry/make & a Yoik (which we were all encouraged to join in with)

Overall a fantastic experience, highly recommend!

Not as good as we thought
Nov 2019 • Couples
We liked the experience of feeding the reindeers, en eating in the cosey tent. Also we liked the stories of the sami.
But the food was really simple and not so good , and the sledding was kind of a joke because you just go around a circle around the tent. So we think it is to expensive for what you get.

Thank you for your review! We offer traditional Sami food which includes simple ingredients which are easy to get in such a climate, one of the examples is a bidos stew. But we also offer you to try the reindeer meat, which is one-of-a-kind meal. For the sledding, there are two options - Short Reindeer Sledding which lasts for 10-15 minutes (the one you have opted for) and a Long Reindeer Sledding which lasts up to 35 minutes. Maybe you would consider coming again and trying out our Long Reindeer Sledding tour, we will do our best to improve your experience!

Chance to get up and personal with reindeer as they are brought down in the winter to feed. Also heard from the lovely Ann Marie about Sami life and as an added bonus, saw the northern lights. Had dinner in a really cosy hut. A lovely evening.

An experience we'll remember
Mar 2019 • Friends
We were on a cruise, but had booked this tour independently. Well worth it. We were picked up at a hotel close to the pier and transported to the site. We got there at dusk and were introduced to the Sami owner. We were then given a bucket of food pellets to feed the reindeer, which was fun. We were then divided into groups and given a ride on a sleigh pulled by a reindeer while other reindeer played and jumped in the area. After everyone had gotten their sleigh ride we were taken inside for a delicious Sami dinner. After dinner we were taken to another teepee where the Sami culture and reindeer herding was explained and we were allowed to ask questions. A wonderful experience. There were a couple of things I wish would have been done differently. First we got there at dusk and didn't really have a chance to take good photos of the herd of reindeer. By the time we got to feed them it was dark and photos weren't great. Also we almost missed our sleigh ride because we didn't know what group we were supposed to be in - maybe letting the people know which group to be ready for would be a good idea.

Feeding raindeer in a snow storm!
Feb 2019 • Family
Highlight of the night was feeding the reindeer dispite the bad weather. Tasty food provided for both me and my vegan son. Would have liked to have spent more time learning about the Sami. Replacement of single use plastic and paper bowls with some thing more authentic would add the the whole experience, but one not to be missed.

Awesome...
I had an amazing time learning about the Reindeer & the Sami people. The food was delicious & comforting. The team of guide & cooks were informative & passionate. I had a fantastic night. I choose to take the sled ride and I loved it, could have stayed on the sled all night & been pulled around by the Reindeer, whilst I gazed at 'Lady Aurora' in awe..

Fantastic experience...

Magical - feeding reindeer in the snow under a spectacular Northern Lights display
Feb 2018 • Couples
Would recommend this to everyone, we were lucky enough to see a fantastic Northern Lights display while we were there but the whole experience was a lovely introduction to the Sami culture and lifestyle. Both our driver and host were genuine and welcoming people. We fed the reindeer, learnt about Sami customs, clothes and song and had a lovely meal in the cosy candle lit lavuu (Sami tent). A magical night!

Extremly interesting and VERY well organised!!
Jan 2018 • Family
This is an absolute must if you visit Tromso, just like you might learn about Aborigines in Australia or Native Indians in America, I would encourage anyone to learn about the Sami people in this part of the world and on this excursion you will certainly achieve that!

The reindeer are adorable and very well looked after and although a little shy they were happy to take food from your hand.

The staff are friendly and so attentive and can't do enough for you, the food, especially the reindeer stew (vegetarian options are available) is restaurant quality and you can have as many bowls as you can eat.

The knowledge of the team is incredible and questions are encouraged and answered in lots of details.

During our time at the Sami camp a lovely team member came in from the cold and enthusiastically announced that the Northern lights were visible, she had been keeping watch outside just in case (the camp location is away from city light pollution so are more visible) that was definitely the cherry on top!!! The Green Lady didn't disappoint and danced for us for about 5 minutes....we were elated!!!

I would 100% recommend this excursion to anyone planning a trip to this part of Norway, my only criticism though is that....I couldn't take any reindeer stew home to the UK with me!!
