Mauthausen Concentration Camp Day Trip from Vienna
From US$ 170.96
Overview
Experience a poignant piece of World War II history with a day trip to Mauthausen Concentration Camp from Vienna. The former camp provides a look at the horrors perpetuated by Hitler during the war. An audio guide will provide historical background on each site as you go. Transport back to Vienna will be included when your tour finishes.
What to Expect
By the summer of 1940, Mauthausen Concentration Camp had become one of the largest labor camp complexes in the German-occupied part of Europe. Some 200,000 people are thought to have been imprisoned at Mauthausen between 1938 and 1945, and about half of them lost their lives. Mauthausen was the last camp complex to be liberated by the Allies.

Begin your day with a cab ride from your hotel to central Vienna to join up with your driver. Hold on to your receipt so that your cab cost can be repaid after your trip.

Climb aboard your comfortable tour vehicle, meet your friendly English-speaking tour escort and become acquainted with the history of Mauthausen Memorial during the 2,5-hour ride from Vienna. Relax as you journey through the countryside of Lower and Upper Austria.

Arrive at Mauthausen Memorial, a building that stands on the site of the former Mauthausen Concentration Camp. Grab your audio guide (available in 11 languages) and begin touring independently through the grounds. See Wiener-Graben quarry, the prisoners’ barracks, the so-called 'Stairs of Death,' SS-quarters, gas chamber, camp prison and the Mauthausen Museum for more historical background on the camp and WWII.

A range of freshly-prepared regional dishes is available for lunch at the Mauthausen Memorial's Bistrol. Afterward, climb back aboard  tour vehicle and begin the drive back to Vienna. You will be returned to the Vienna State Opera in Downtown Vienna.

Emotional and Moving Experience

A visit to a concentration camp isn't something that is fun or a "good time" but this tour offered a deeply moving and sobering experience. Our guide, Ton, was engaging and well versed in the history of the camp. It's very hard to describe the...More

The Mauthausen Memorial Museum respectfully regards those who endured the dreadful Holocaust. Lest We Forget. Our tour guide was compassionate and kind and cared for our...More

We both found the trip to be very interesting. Our driver Tom was excellent, he gave us lots of insight into what would be expected. The only downfall I found was the amount time we had to visit. Arriving there around 10:30 & having to...More

A place everyone should visit

Our Tour Guide was excellent. Growing up in Alaska I was somewhat isolated from world history even though you studied it in school. Mauthausen was a very interesting and somber place to visit that was true history brought to life. Although it is a memorial...More
