Wine Tasting Bike Tour departing Vienna

Overview

This 9.5-hour bike tour from Vienna gives you the opportunity to enjoy the idyllic Austrian countryside and sample locally produced wines. On a state-of-the-art bike, you’ll feel energized as you cycle past lush valleys, quaint villages and rolling vineyards. Take a gentle route with regular breaks, enjoy free time to relax by the Danube or climb to a hilltop castle, and receive lunch and numerous wine samples free of charge.

What to Expect

Greet your guide at the Vienna Explorer tour office on Franz Josefs Kai and make your way to a local metro station. From here, you’ll take the metro to a train station and board a train destined for the Wachau Valley — a luscious region replete with vineyards, wineries and quaint villages.

On arrival in the valley, collect your modern bikes and listen to a short safety briefing. The gentle, 15-mile (24-km) route is comprised primarily of cycle paths and quiet roads, ensuring you’ll feel safe and secure throughout.

Pedal beside the picturesque Danube River and feast your senses on stunning scenery before stopping at your first winery to sample the local bounty. During each tasting, a wine expert will detail the production processes and subtle tastes of each wine.

Midway through the day, you’ll stop in the charming village of Dürnstein to explore during free time. Opt to ascend to the ruins of a fortress used to incarcerate King Richard the Lionhear or simply relax on the beach beside the Danube. Swimming is optional so bring along a towel and bathing suit if you’d like to dip in the Danube.

After lunch in a local tavern, continue cycling to your final winery before returning to the train station for the transfer back to Vienna.

Great tour and guide, bikes just need attention

This was a great day out in beautiful villages and countryside. The balance between cycling, wine tasting, guide input and free exploring time was just right. Not a Tour de France effort but need to be reasonably fit and able to cycle 15 miles without...More

One of the highlights of our trip

Iolo was an excellent guide. His quirky personality was infectious. The tour started with a train ride to Kreme then an approx 25km bike ride through the Durnstein. Along the way we stopped at 2 excellent wineries and had lunch in this excellent restaurant. We...More

Just regular bikes. They were all "cruiser" style bikes with a limited number of gears. Very easy to ride. When I went on this trip, all the bikes were in very good condition.
