It is possible to visit many of the locations by foot yourself but this is the better way to get your fix. Our guide Mitch was great fun and engaging. The tour brings you to all of the key shooting locations in a SOM designed bus, the soundtrack is played too so enjoy the sing-along! Visiting the Cathedral where the wedding was filmed is spectacular, particularly as the journey takes you through the Lake District area which is breathtaking. The tour does not feel rushed and you have plenty of time for photographs and recreating your favourite scenes. Thanks again to Mitch!!Written 20 March 2025

From a documentary on TV, I’m surprised to discover that many people living in Salzburg don’t know anything about The Sound of Music. The tour lasted about four hours and stopped at many of the iconic scenes from the movie. The soundtrack was played on the bus while riding around and everyone sang along with the soundtrack. It was fun!Written 14 March 2025

We booked the tour yesterday and hopped on the bus this morning. Even though it was the end of November, it was packed. You are paying for convenience and eliminating any stress of travel. There isn’t a simple way to get there unless you are going to drive. We never take tours unless the potential hassle factors is higher than the price. We left at 815 am and we got there 10 minutes early to the starting point. Kinda a mistake. First you have to go to the booth to get a green plastic ticket that you give to the host as you enter the bus. I assume this is just the count. We just followed others to the booth so that worked out. But others that were in line to get on the bus had to jump out of line which can seriously affect your day. We thought we were there with an adequate amount of time before we left but that was an erroneous assumption. I would get there much earlier and perhaps 30 minutes before you leave. The reason where you sit. We had a double decker bus which one would think would be adequate. It is in the sense that everyone had a seat but not necessarily what they wanted. Everyone in front of us tried to go upstairs for the view. About 2/3rds of the people were in front for us so we skipped the stairs and grabbed a pair of seats downstairs. Others tried and failed to find a seat upstairs and had to grab whatever seat was available. Some were facing the opposite direction of the bus which if are prone to motion sickness would be a disaster. The narration was informative and the ride is comfortable. The back door opens downstairs which is convenient to get off rapidly. There was a WC in the back but didn’t see anyone use it. I would use this company again though would get there earlier next time. Enjoy.

Incredible half-day tour to Hallstatt.
The scenery travelling to and from Hallstatt was breathtaking.
Haki was an excellent driver & Grendaline was very informative, personable & fun with her little bit of yoddling.
Hallstatt has a funicular railway thats give amazing views cost 24 Euro pp. With 30 minutes allowed at the top to give everyone a chance to see the incredible views.
There is also a lift at the top of you can not walk up the remainder via slope.
If you do one trip when you are in Salzburg this is the one.
If you see a stall selling cakes a pastry with custard & fresh fruit onto is the best cake we have ever eaten they are called Habsburgs I think
The reflections on the lakes.. we'll just see the photos.
What an amazing trip highly recommend

Thank you for your wonderful review! We're thrilled to hear that you had such an incredible experience on your half-day tour to Hallstatt. The breathtaking scenery truly makes the journey special, and we're glad you enjoyed it just as much as we do.
It's fantastic to hear that Haki and Grendaline made your trip even more memorable—Haki with his excellent driving and Grendaline with her informative and fun commentary (and a little yodeling!). The funicular ride certainly offers spectacular views, and we appreciate you sharing the tip about the lift for those who may need it.
Your recommendation of the Habsburg pastry sounds absolutely delicious—we'll be sure to keep an eye out for it! And as for the lake reflections, they really do speak for themselves in photos.
Thank you again for your kind words and recommendation. We’re delighted you had such an amazing trip and hope to welcome you on another adventure soon!

We took the half-day tour from Panorama Tours office at Mirabellplatz at Salzburg, where we exchanged our vouchers for tickets. The tour started on time. Marx, our guide on the day was fantastic - very knowledgeable with great sense of humour. The drive through the scenic Upper Austria was breath taking. The Hallstatt town was one of the most beautiful towns we have visited. Surrounded by the beautiful Alps and beside lovely lake, the town presented breath taking views throughout. We had a leisurely walk through the streets, enjoying the beautiful scenery and dropping by souvenir shops, bakeries and eateries. Our first stop was the catholic church and the adjoining bone house. It was equally solemn and interesting, one of its kind. Then we slowly made our way up the funiculare to get to the sky walk for more breath taking scenery. We did not have enough time to see the salt mine, for which one would need the full day trip. Overall, it was a great trip, made even more enjoyable by our lovely guide.

Hallstatt is a beautiful village, a picture perfect place on the lake in the mountains. However, it only exists for tourists, every day lots of buses bring people to the village to wander around and take photos, then, 2 hours later, they get back on the bus and more arrive. So if you’re looking for an authentic, unspoilt experience, this isn’t it because the village is packed full of people taking photos.
As for this trip, you are paying £65 per person for a coach to take you there, leave you for 2 hours, then take you back to Salzburg. The guide was informative but there are much cheaper ways to get to Hallstatt and back - you could take the train, or, if there are 2 or more of you, then getting a taxi or renting a car would be more cost effective. If you do take this trip, make sure you arrive at the meeting point 30 minutes before the bus departs to ensure you get a seat

Thank you for booking our Hallstatt tour and the time to bring your experience to our attention. Please do note Hallstatt is a famous and also very popular destination attracting myriads of visitors from all over the world. This hype is both - a blessing and a curse. We do understand you would like to spend more time in Hallstatt but we are rather limited timewise. As described on our website, we only have two hours time there. Hiring a car is of course an option to explore the location independently, but costs also a minimum of EUR 150,- or doing it with public transport which takes about 2,5 hours one way. Salzburg Panorama Tours also offers Private Tours for smaller groups on where you are more flexible with the time shedule and stops during the tour. Be sure that we take customer meanings very seriously because your review helps us to improve our tours and services. We would be happy if we could get another chance to welcome you on board of any of our tours someday.

Much to improve on the excursion:
We take the tours September 4 at 8:00am
1. The attitude of the guide, lacking empathy and kindness.
2. When we arrived in Hallstatt the guide asked us to follow him when we arrived at the funicular ticket office, he asked each of us for 21 euros to buy a ticket to enter the mines, without asking if we wanted to enter the mines or not, the majority of the group We only stayed to take panoramic photos, while the funicular ticket costs 12 euros, we were asked for 21 euros per person. What we consider abuse.
I had taken the Sound of Music tour 6 years ago, it was excellent. I'm missing this one.

The visit was great. Hallstatt is a very beautiful city. However, the mine and the skywalk (which are the greatest attraction there) were closed until 11h30 so since the bus was leaving at 12:15, we were not able to experience it. We spend more time in the bus than in the city, it would be more valuable to give more time to guest and visitors in the town to make it worth it. To have done other tours, this one was really expensive for what we ended up with.

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your recent tour experience. We apologize if our tour did not meet your expectations. Usually the Skywalk opens at 09.00a.m so we don´t know what has happened there on that day. It is always our goal to provide informative, engaging, and well-organized tours. Please know that your feedback is valuable to us, as it helps us identify areas for improvement.
We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back and provide you with an exceptional tour experience.

I participated in this tour on 6 September 2022 with my spouse. I did not like the elderly male tour guide (TG) with white hair medium build. We arrived early to sit upfront but he reserved four seats on the entire front row, not for disabled, but for four people who arrived last after everyone using the excuse they were Spanish speaking. I know for a fact Two of the four spoke English because we were on the row behind them. Regardless, TG barely spoke Spanish to them. Also, At the other tour we joined on 5 September, we were instructed to sit at the same place on the return trip. This one didn’t and it was disorganized. My husband accidentally didn’t get off the lake cruise boat and I was basically left to fend for myself to figure out how to get back to Salzburg, without TG support or help. TG should prepare an instruction sheet to help the stranded. Luckily we met some travelers who went to Lake Hallstatt via bus and returning to Salzburg via bus as well. I suggest in the future TG should warn tour participants that you can’t do both funicular ride to top, visit the charming town, and one hour cruise. btw funicular and lake cruise are out of pocket excluded from tour fee. Time is really tight in this cruise.

Thank you for your time writing us detailed feedback
Regarding the guide:
Our shared tours are held in English and German only, it was a courtesy of our guide to provide some information in Spanish to our Spanish speaking guests.
Therefore, he placed them upfront so a third language would not be disturbing to other passengers onboard.
We are sorry you did not enjoy our well-experienced & multi-lingual tour guide, but please do refrain from any age discrimination.
Please also note in order to provide a smooth running of the Hallstatt tour with almost 70 people on board, we need to keep to our prebooked time slots as well as the tour schedules.
The drive to Hallstatt is about 1.5 hours. and the stay in Hallstatt is about 2.5 hours.
On the way to Hallstatt the guide provides all the important about Hallstatt as well as the timing of the tour and meeting point; stressing the fact that being punctual is a necessity.
The stay as mentioned is 2.5 hours, our guests on board have free time and may choose how they would like to spend their time.
A visit to the skywalk (1h) and a boat ride (1h) leaves not much time to explore the town, and we do recommend addressing the guide beforehand what is possible timewise – as we cannot keep more than 60 passengers waiting – being on time and may have scheduled something else afterwards.
We are sorry you missed the tour departure as you did not manage to get off the cruise in time.
However, please do understand our guide is not able to pick up the phone giving directions when on the tour bus on the way back;
this would not be rather disturbing to the other passengers on board.
Our back-office is more than happy to provide all the information for our guests who missed the tour or prefer to return later the day.
Once again thank you for your timing writing such a detailed review – yet we do hope you get another chance welcoming you on board, maybe on a private tour being more flexible according your interests and timing
Best regards

A very pretty village and well worth a visit. We arrived early, circa 09.00 and funicular and some shops were not working/open at that time which was a shame as the trip us obviously time restricted. Shops opened later.
Sadly, whilst the guide was very knowledgeable, the sound system was poor so couldn't hear most of what he was saying.
The trip was well organised by Panarama

A lovely trip through the beautiful countryside of Austria. Once we had arrived the walk through the village was magical and the views across the lake were stunning. I would highly recommend the tour provided by Panorama, the tour guide was very knowledgeable and the journey was problem-free.

On August 21, 2022 I took a screenshot of the package and it included visiting the 7000 year old mine and the Gosau Lake... I passed the link and all the information to the other travelers, but now that page description changed, and we're afraid of booking... Do the package changed too? I'm in the USA and I would like to email someone about it if possible due to time zone differences. Can you help us?

I'd be going to their website to check or if you are already in Salzburg, their ticket station is near the Mirabelle Gardens or your hotel concierge can look into it for you.
Hope that helps.

On booking it says start time 1200h- is this correct for departure from hotel or just default on the booking? What time do we leave Salzburg?

Hi, you leave the meeting point at 12.00pm it is by their little ticket office by the Church
You have a lovely tour of the lakes on the way, past Red Bull, some of the Sound of Music locations and arrive at Hallsatt a couple of hours later.

Hi!
I am looking to go to Hallstatt in December when we will be staying in Salzburg. Is this tour and all of the stops in operation in December? (Specifically Dec. 27?) I read somewhere that certain parts are closed in winter.
Written 24 November 2019
I agree with the other answers, as I don't know myself. Check online with Panorama and see. Hallstatt is within the Salzgammergut region and the bus rides through the area in its way to the lake. Part of the route includes sights seen on "The Sound of Music" tour. Yes, there is a brief stop overlooking Wolfgangsee, long enough to take a couple of pictures. The stop at Hallstatt is not that long, and it is not advisable to take a ferry ride on the lake during the tour. I don't know if you will be able to get back to the bus in time. The tour does take a full day to complete, so I don't think there are any tours combining the two--Hallstatt and Eagle's Nest. You can check.
Written 25 November 2019
Is it possible to get on the lake during the Hallstatt tour for example maybe the ferry? How long and how much is it? should a person prebook and if so for what time?
Written 15 May 2019
There are no ferries that I know of. I believe you can rent a small boat but that is it. You are going to love it! It’s breathtaking.
