- sirjackal00020180 contributionsVery pleasant tour and lunchWe enjoyed the Sound of Music Tour. The Austrian tour guide Peter was experienced and detailed with facts about the areas. The places visited were great. The lunch afterward was extremely nice in an old restaurant dating back to 1546. It was part of the tour purchased. We had the apple strudel, chicken schnitzel, and salad.Written 9 December 2024
- sirjackal00020180 contributionsNice tour, nice townHallstatt tour was nice. Definitely worth the cost for travel to get there. I have done local transportation in the past to save, but not for this one. 1.5 hrs away from Salzburg. Our tour guide OBrad was really good. I booked the 815am tour which I thought was a good idea, but the marketplace there was not ready for us to serve any food or drinks. I had to spend 30 Euros for an over prices cafe for desserts and coffee, soda. They didnt serve lunch either. Of course, once we finished eatting at the café, the marketplace foods were ready. Lessons learned. Beautiful town and had great views. Walked to the top where the Chapel was and took city pictures. Worth the tour.Written 9 December 2024
- David_Albert_Park0 contributionsExcellent Personal Salzburg Sound of Music with GeraldWe organized a day trip from Vienna and met Gerald at the train station. He was very knowledgeable about the filming & main cast members & even played tunes on the car radio. We were able to get him to take up to the Nonnberg Abby so we could see inside the church plus also to Basilika Sankt Michael. At the end he returned us to the train station for us to catch our train back to Vienna. RecommendedWritten 9 December 2024
- Louwig0 contributionsFabulous TourBridget was our tour guide and she was extremely knowledgeable and a good sense of humor too. Do a private tour was perfect for our elderly parents. We stopped at some great spots, learnt lots about the sound of music even though I thought I know heaps!!! Thoroughly enjoyed the tour, we all did.Written 7 December 2024
- museumcourt0 contributionsA lovely village but…..Hallstatt is a beautiful village, a picture perfect place on the lake in the mountains. However, it only exists for tourists, every day lots of buses bring people to the village to wander around and take photos, then, 2 hours later, they get back on the bus and more arrive. So if you’re looking for an authentic, unspoilt experience, this isn’t it because the village is packed full of people taking photos. As for this trip, you are paying £65 per person for a coach to take you there, leave you for 2 hours, then take you back to Salzburg. The guide was informative but there are much cheaper ways to get to Hallstatt and back - you could take the train, or, if there are 2 or more of you, then getting a taxi or renting a car would be more cost effective. If you do take this trip, make sure you arrive at the meeting point 30 minutes before the bus departs to ensure you get a seatWritten 7 December 2024
- kathy k0 contributionsLoved Loved the Sound of Music Tour. The Sound of Music tour guide Kayden (I think) and driver Alex were wonderful. Kayden had a great sense of humour, well spoken and very informative. Hallstat not so much. The guide (not sure if his name) elderly gentleman was late arriving to the bus and his English lacked correct pronunciation as well as he just went through the motions and done. Lucky the Sound of Music was so much fun, made up for the morning tour.Written 6 December 2024
- Vienne C0 contributionsHallstat: Beautiful! Sound of Music: for the passionate followers only. It's difficult to rate this tour. It's actually a great tour. The guides were professional and fantastic. However, you have to be the right audience to love it. First, it is actually 2 separately operated tours - Started with the morning half day Hallstatt tour and returned to the starting bus stop in Salzburg. Then hopped on the different afternoon half day sound of music tour followed immediately. Due to this operation, there's only 15 minutes in between to hop to the next bus. No one told me about the right timing. You have to be aware of this and plan your time right to grab a quick bite at Hallstatt or go hungry the whole day. Sound of music tour was very entertaining and the guide was definitely very devoted in his role singing and acting. This tour is meant for passionate followers of the movie, with fun facts and SIGN ALONG. I like the movie but not that extreme into it, which can be awkward to be on this tour. This is my problem. Know your expectations before signing up. Also, all stops were just stopping and looking from the outside of the building. The church was the only stop that guests could go inside. I guess that's where all the singing creating fun vibes to compensate for the lack of activities at each site. This is not a small group tour at all. On my day of tour, there were 2 big coaches for each half day tour. That's 80+ guests for each half day tour. With a tour size like this, I feel the pricing is a little too high.Written 4 December 2024

- Susan L0 contributionsMust do tripFantastic trip that is so much more than just the Salt Mine tour. Our guide Johannes was absolutely brilliant. He was so friendly and his knowledge was very informative. The drive through the mountains is stunning with the added interest of war time events relating to Hitler. The Salt Mine trip is great fun shooting down the miners slides and interesting to hear about how salt is mined. Johannes went above and beyond-sharing family recipes with us too. He made the trip extra special.Written 1 December 2024
- juliehS1272GW0 contributionsGreat all round tripReally good 4 hr tour and enjoyed our tour guided commentary very much, would recommend Panaroma tours. A good drive up into the mountains, seeing hitlers checkpoints, where his house stood. Lovely views and the salt mine was superb. Brace yourself for the slide!Written 30 November 2024

- RjessMMM0 contributionsConvenient and low stressWe booked the tour yesterday and hopped on the bus this morning. Even though it was the end of November, it was packed. You are paying for convenience and eliminating any stress of travel. There isn’t a simple way to get there unless you are going to drive. We never take tours unless the potential hassle factors is higher than the price. We left at 815 am and we got there 10 minutes early to the starting point. Kinda a mistake. First you have to go to the booth to get a green plastic ticket that you give to the host as you enter the bus. I assume this is just the count. We just followed others to the booth so that worked out. But others that were in line to get on the bus had to jump out of line which can seriously affect your day. We thought we were there with an adequate amount of time before we left but that was an erroneous assumption. I would get there much earlier and perhaps 30 minutes before you leave. The reason where you sit. We had a double decker bus which one would think would be adequate. It is in the sense that everyone had a seat but not necessarily what they wanted. Everyone in front of us tried to go upstairs for the view. About 2/3rds of the people were in front for us so we skipped the stairs and grabbed a pair of seats downstairs. Others tried and failed to find a seat upstairs and had to grab whatever seat was available. Some were facing the opposite direction of the bus which if are prone to motion sickness would be a disaster. The narration was informative and the ride is comfortable. The back door opens downstairs which is convenient to get off rapidly. There was a WC in the back but didn’t see anyone use it. I would use this company again though would get there earlier next time. Enjoy.Written 27 November 2024
- cathysI8571DZ0 contributionsHallstett bus tourThe guided trip from Salsberg to Hallstatt was an enjoyable experience. We went a different way coming and going so saw different scenery. Sit on left side of bus for better views. Guide spoke very good English and had a passion for country. He was clear about what was expected of his full load of passengers. We took tour on a Sunday and only bad part was museum closed and couldn't go into church as service happening. We should have done cable car to top to see salt mines our only regret. Setting is absolutely stunning. Beautiful area.Written 24 November 2024

Booked the 2pm Sound of Music Tour with Panorama Tours. The meeting point is opposite the Mirabell Palace. Our tour guide was Bridget and Ivo our driver. They made us very welcome and Bridget gave us loads of information plus a lot of things that went on during the making of the movie. The tour lasts approximately 4 hours and takes you to many of the film locations. We found the tour excellent and worth the cost which is around £42 per person

During a recent trip to Salzburg, one of the excursions I booked was the original Sound of Music tour.
This is a 4-hour tour that runs twice a day, at 9.15 am and at 2 pm.
Everyone who has ever seen the Sound of Music film, will appreciate visiting many of the locations where the film was made and reminiscing about the story of the real family Von Trapp.
The tour visits parts of the Lake district, as well as sights in Salzburg city like the Nonnberg convent, Maria’s home in the film before she went to work for the family. This is still a working convent today and can, for that reason, not be visited with groups. The Mirabell gardens and the Pegasus fountain, where maria and the children danced and sang in the film, Schloss Leopoldskron, the family home in the movie, and the church in Mondsee where the wedding scenes of Maria and Captain von Trapp were filmed, as well as the famous 16 going on 17 Gazebo, which is now in the grounds of Hellbrunn Palace for safekeeping as a result of it being vandalised in the original location.
I was very lucky to have a knowledgeable guide (David) who not only loves the film and is very au fait with the history of the family and the movie, but also enjoys passing on his knowledge to guests. The fact that there was also just one other guest on the tour, made for a very fun excursion, complete with singalong to the songs of the movie.
Salzburg Panorama Tours conduct this tour and many others on a regular schedule. Normally the tours run every day, but under the current circumstances with fewer visitors to the area as a result of covid-19, there may be days when not every tour is offered, so do check with the booking office before making plans. The norm is that tours run with 40-seater coaches, however, at the current time, minibuses that can accept up to 9 people run instead, in full compliance with social distancing rules and mandatory face coverings.
The tour is warmly recommended for anyone who loves the “Sound of Music”.

This tour is such fun. April our guide was full of energy and excitement for the Sound of Music and she was just herself, which was awesome. She had such rich knowledge of the film, but also Salzburg's history and wider Austrian history and culture. It made the tour really enjoyable and not just for Sound of Music fans. I really enjoyed the brief stops and feel that the tour lived up to expectations, I wasn't expecting long stays at any particular spot and was glad we had to keep our distance from most - it means the preservation of these incredibly beautiful areas. Though, I do find the price quite expensive it is competitive and you don't really have an option. I wouldn't say this trip is great value for money, but it is good fun and a great way to see wider Salzburg.

We were so excited about the tour and really wanted to like it but it was really over the top. Some of the trivia was interesting but our guide was super loud with bad jokes and a couple of inappropriate comments referencing Tinder. She seemed to take joy in talking about how bad Christopher Plumber was and all the behind the scenes things he did. The sites themselves were interesting especially the church which was the wedding site. I think with a different guide maybe it wouldn't have been so in your face. I wouldn't recommend this tour and would suggest that people research the sites and do your own self guided tour. Skip this one.

We were very disappointed with our tour. There were two groups of us split into two vans. Those with back seats could barely see anything. Our tour guide was knowledgeable, but very unexcited. I am obsessed with the musical, but she didn’t seem to like it at all. It was a Sunday, so many places were closed and we were not notified that this would be the case ahead of time. We didn’t even stop at the yellow house they used for the façade in the movie. She just pointed at it as we drove past. There was barely any singing because no one was put in the mood by our guide. And though we didn’t stop at half the places discussed in the description of the tour, we still paid full price. I was deeply disappointed. Especially when I saw the other tour group singing do re me on the staircase and laughing.

Hello,
thank you for choosing our tour company and for taking time bringing your experience to our attention! Unfortunately it seems that we did not meet your expectations and we are very sorry about this since our main aim is the satisfaction of our guests.
As described on our website etc. Salzburg Panorama Tours is responsible to schedule the tour vehicles. During low season and for smaller groups we operate our tours in minivans where necessary. That's not only in order to save expenses but also to respect the environment.
We do understand that you would like to gain a deeper insight into the Sound of Music locations, therefore, being somewhat disappointed. However please be aware some of the sites are not open to the public and therefore cannot be visited directly. Thank you for respecting that.
Again, thank you for the review! Be sure we take customer meanings very seriously because your review helps us to improve our tours and services. We would be happy if we could get another chance to welcome you on board of any of our tours someday.

I expected a corny tour and that is what I got plus a whole lot more fun. I am not a huge fan of the Sound of Music movie but it was an inexpensive tour and you only come to Salzburg once in the winter. Alenka was an excellent tour guide and we saw all the fun sites that were filmed in the movie and the ones that I didn’t remember she recalled them for me. She gave us a mini tour of the city and recommended other tours through the church’s or city that we would never had considered. I would highly recommend this tour at the beginning of your Salzburg stay as it gives you a good layout of what to see on your own. Yeah Alenka!

We toured on a rainy afternoon in August ‘21 (8/26).
While the weather certainly made us damp…it didn’t dampen the spirits of our fellow tourists thanks to our tour guide Brigette!
The bus was less than 50% full and we made all the stops around the city and out to Mondsee where we saw “The Hills” on the way and the Cathedral (Basilika St. Michael) where the Captain and Maria were married in the village of Mondsee.
Throughout the trip Brigette provided all the details behind the locations and had sing-a-longs and videos along the way.
If you’re a fan of the story and movie - I highly recommend going.

Peter the tour guide was amazing! So knowledgeable and funny! Our driver Igor (sorry if i spelt it wrong) made us laugh from the start and his mulled wine was a perfect addition to the tour to warm up half way through.
The stops are really well planned and Peter was a great guide. The film clips that played inbetween the stops also really added to the experience and got the group all singing.
Can't recommend the tour or Peter and igor highly enough :)
A must for any Sound of Music fan!

I bought this tour as a present for my wife who loves The Sound Of Music.
I would highly recommend as we had a wonderful day seeing the beauty of Salzburg and the surrounding areas, and finding out the interesting stories surrounding the filming. My wife and I particularly enjoyed the lake and mountains section, and spending some time in Mondsee, which was beautiful.
April (who ran our tour) was born to do this job, was very entertaining, interesting and funny... I really thought she had the timing and improvisation of a comedian.
I wasn’t the biggest fan of the film going into the tour. However the tour has made me a fan, since I now know all the interesting back stories. If you’re not a fan of the film, the tour is generally a very nice tour of Salzburg.
It’s worth mentioning that the tour leaves on time to the minute, so try to be on time. I notified the company that we would be very slightly late due to our train journey from Vienna. We got to the tour desk at 9:17, but the bus had left at 9:15. Fortunately the staff were very calm and accommodating, and took us to the first stop so that we could join the rest of the tour.

Very good guide and definitely worth it for the Sound of Music fan.
I am not a huge fan of Sound of Music however my wife is, however the guide did a great job to explain the history of Salzburg and surrounding lakes. She also had an extensive knowledge of how the musical was linked to the area.
I am not a fan of tours but this was worth it and I would recommend this to everyone.

We are thinking of booking the tour on a Sunday but our previous experiences have been that lots of shops, cafes, restaurants etc are closed on Sundays. Is it a good idea to book this tour on a Sunday or will we be missing out on some places due to Sunday closures?

Hi there- I booked a tour on September 3rd & looking at the 10 day forecast, it looks like it’s going to be a rainy week. If it’s raining, will the tour still happen & if yes, will you be able to see much with it being overcast/rainy?
Thank you~

I have booked to travel to Vienna in April 2023 and will spend a week there. It has ben my wish to visit the sites where the Sound of Music was filed. I note the following
exclusions:
Gratuities
Food and drinks
Entry/Admission - Salzburg
Entry/Admission - Schloss Hellbrunn. We are particularly interested in what the last two exclusions mean. Do they mean that we will not be able to visit Salsburg or Schloss Helibrunn? We are not clear about these exclusions. Could you kindly explain this please? Thank you

The tour takes you to the grounds of Schloss Hellbrunn but doesn’t include entry into the house itself. I’m not sure on the other exclusion - you do go to places in Salzburg to see outside areas so maybe it’s similar in meaning it doesn’t include entry into any of the places. It’s a great trip, really good fun!

As an add on, you ca't eat in the bus but you can drink (as well as buy drinks from water to wine that are served in the bus.)

How early would you recommend buying tickets for this tour? for a group of 5 adults and 2 children to visit in August, can we buy the tickets in June? Will that be okay or will it be too late?
Written 10 January 2022
We were there in July 2021 and I think we bought them the day before...However, like cplmoneill, although we were their during the Salzburg music festival, there were almost no English speaking visitors, so I'm not sure I would treat our experience as typical. I'd make them somewhat in advance for this summer.

The sound of music tour has two 'start' time - I believe it is 8 or 9 in the morning and then 2 in the afternoon. Both meet at the same location - Sound of music tour booth near St. Andrew's church
