We booked the "Take a walk on the Ice Side Tour" with Arcanum Tours and Icelandic Mountain Guides did the Glacier hike part of the day trip. I cannot recommend both parties enough and we had the best day tour visiting the South of Iceland waterfalls and Solheimajokull glacier hike.
Doing a day tour in a minibus rather than the larger buses is definitely worth it and our driver and tour guide for the day was absolutely delightful and really made the day tour so interesting and fun sharing funny stories and Icelandic history. She shared her passion for agriculture, farming and wildlife while giving us fascinating information through out the day mixed with some quiet times on the bus to rest and relax too.
The glacier hike was truly the most fantastic experience and was made even better by our fantastic mountain guide called Tamas. He was very knowledgeable and shared his interests with passion and in a great fun way too.
I was a little apprehensive before the hike as I am not that fit but with Tamas guiding us I felt very comfortable to say at any point if I was struggling. We went at a good pace with small stops in between to hear interesting facts and ask questions. And he ensured we had all the help we needed with any steeper bits. Tamas was great at reminding us through out the hike about the tips we were given at the start on how best to walk in the crampons and use the pick axe so as to steady ourselves in a safe way.
It truly was the most amazing experience with a fantastic guide! to be able to hike up the glacier and stand on the top with such breath taking views and see the natural beauty of it on such a huge scale as well as the layers of ice up close was just wonderful. And on top of all that we were blessed with the best
weather too!

Hello 1000c and thank you for taking your time to write this amazing review :)
Our Take a Walk on the Ice Side tour is definitely a classic South Coast tour with an adventurous twist. We try our best to provide the best guiding experience to our clients and minibus is surely the best way to experience it! It´s great to hear that you have learnt more about Icelandic agriculture and wildlife throughout the bus journey.
We are happy to hear about your experience on the glaicer with our tour guide Tamas. He is a great teacher on and off the glacier and he also taught me a lot about glaciers as well :) A walk on the Sólheimajökull glacier might sound intimidating at first. But as you know, it really is a safe experience with our professional guides as we always put safety first. Glad to hear that you had a good weather day on the glacier and return with such happiness and enthusiasm!
We hope you had enjoyed your time in Iceland and we hope that this is one of the highlight of your trip. We look forward to seeing you in another adventure!
Best regards,
Gary

Icelandic Mountaineering Guides did a fantastic job. They provided the needed equipment, but most importantly, had an amazing guide. Josh had the confident experience of thousands of hikes, yet retained that enthusiasm as if this was his first week!
He made the entire experience fun, enjoyable, educational, and entertaining. Without a doubt, this experience was definitely one of the top highlights of our time in Iceland.
Thank you, Josh
We were traveling as a family (all adults) and have been dealing with the variability of the Icelandic winter weather (rain, snow, hail, sun, rain, repeat) but fortunately enjoyed pretty good weather during our glacier hike. But definitely be prepared with good boots, warm clothes, and prepared for unpredictable skies in February!

Our family of five did the private version of this tour, because we were traveling with our 85-year old father. Dad is extremely fit for his age, but still is an older man with some balance issues especially going down slopes. Our guide, Lucas, did a truly amazing job. Lucas was extremely patient with our dad and went well out of his way to ensure that dad could make the trip to the glacier. Lucas spent extra time cutting steps in the ice to help dad in some more challenging slopes, and there were long stretches where Lucas walked backwards, guiding dad with both hands to ensure he kept his balance. Lucas was always patient and never rushed dad. We were so impressed, and so grateful. My dad is so happy tonight and proud of having been able to visit the glacier - a real high point for him in his life.
The glacier itself was fantastic and an amazing experience for all of us.

Wow! The adventure of a lifetime!! Our guide, Claudia was informative, professional and entertaining. The first stretch of the hike was a bit challenging just due to how steep it is, but worth every step!! Can’t say enough about this experience and this tour company. They were very courteous and efficient from the first contact until we handed in our gear, and there aren’t words to describe how it is to walk atop an ancient glacier.

Was a great experience for us, the staff was very kind and helpful. We were three friends, but the hike could be done with a family with older children. Was a very scenic and close up view of the glacier, and walking on top of it is something not to miss. The guide was very informative and had a good sense of humour, made the hike more interesting by a long shot.

My favorite part was feeling in control walking on ice when I doubted I could do it. Jose Andres and Javier did a great job showing people of different skill levels how to walk like an angry penguin to improve balance and have fun on the hike. There were plenty of stops to catch your breath and look at the beautiful scenery. You also get the right equipment, like crampons, which makes a huge difference.

This excursion was phenomenal; don't pass it up! We wound our way through a breathtaking crevasse and were suspended (very safely!) over water coursing deep into the glacier. The vistas and landscapes were unforgettable. Our guide was Jose, and you should request him if you get the chance. I am sure they are all wonderful but Jose was knowledgable, friendly, fun and most of all he prioritized our safety the entire time and you can feel how deeply he loves this region. I can't recommend it enough.

The view was extraordinary, nothing can prepare you for the blue of the ice!
I was a "bit" nervous when we were being kitted up, not only because I am an anxious person to begin with, but also because we had so much protective gear on - it sank in that our experience was not going to be a walk in the park. Our fantastic guide Javi @javientures managed to calm my nerves and with all the extra attention he made me feel very safe every step of the way. Javi is very knowledgeable as he keep exploring the routes throughout the year so he can keep everyone very safe. He is fun and jokes a lot, while he is very serious when it comes to safety. - The best combination!
Needless to say, we had so much fun, the three hours felt like 30 minutes and I could not believe that it was over so soon. I was even wondering whether we made the right choice. It felt like the time we have spent on the glacier was not enough. If I knew then what I know now, I would have selected a longer expedition. (Mind you, the scardy cat that I am was quite proud anyway! :-) )
This is definitely a great experience for families, without great challenges or difficulties. And by the way with this arrangement you would be getting the royal treatment as the vehicles are suitable for the rugged terrain and you would not have to make the unnecessary trip on foot to reach the starting point of the hike.
Thanks a million Javi! The glacier experience is unforgettable!

Clement was a fantastic guide. I have some small balance issues and he was great at helping build my confidence and providing a bit of extra support when needed. Really informative and great at explaining things.
The scenery is breathtaking! Such a unique experience to walk on a glacier and see the different formations. A highlight of our trip to Iceland!

Awesome guided tour of the glacier with a knowledgeable guide (Josh) who not only kept everyone safe and secure throughout but gave a lot of interesting information about Iceland and the glacier that you wouldn’t get from a self guided tour. I would say you want to be prepared for a decent physical activity as we climbed 10,000 steps during the hike by the end of it. You definitely get a bit of a thrill from climbing around the glacier fissures and holes but quite safe with the crampons the tour company supplies for your shoes. Definitely wear hiking boots (otherwise you can rent) and bring potential rain gear. Really cool experience in Iceland suitable for all ages but do be prepared for a workout!

No, they have other tours that do include it tho, just look around on their site and you’ll find it, i think is called Take a Walk on the Ice Side, that has transport from Reykjavík to the glaciar and back, it also stops by a couple of waterfalls.
