Humpback, orca, blue, and minke whales patrol the Reykyavik coast, but you’ll have to leave the shore for the best chance of spotting them. This whale-watching cruise goes deep into the natural habitat of Iceland’s whales and dolphins, getting as close as possible without disturbing the animals. Let a guide direct your attention as you travel across Faxafloi Bay, where a blend of warm and cold ocean currents creates spectacular whale-watching opportunities.

We had a great time on this trip. We’d actually booked for the Sunday and thought we would collect our tickets the day before. However, they said they don’t issue tickets the day before in case the trip is cancelled due to the weather. As the Saturday was such a lovely day, and Sunday would be our last day, we asked if it was possible to change to that day, and it was no problem.

We had an English guide, Rob, who was very knowledgeable, explaining what to look for when trying to find whales and dolphins, the different types found in the area, why those types liked it there, what they ate, how to tell them apart and so on. He was very informative and clear.

The boat was well equipped with toilets, seating inside and out, and a bar area to get hot drinks and snacks (the most reasonable prices too). They can also provide you with a waterproof all in one to keep you warm and dry off your clothing isn’t sufficient.

We were lucky and saw 2 whales popping up and down regularly for a while, and then some dolphins.

A great trip.

This tour was amazing. The boat has good facilities with a bar, toilets, indoor seating, and lots of outdoor deck space. It didn't feel over crowded. We had lovely weather, but if it is cold and wet there are overalls available for free which you can wear. Emily, the marine biologist, gave great commentary throughout and would constantly tell us where the wildlife is and where we should be looking. We were so blessed with our sightings. We saw 10+ humpback whales, and 3 came right up to the boat! We were also surrounded by dolphins. It didn't feel rushed either, we stayed with the animals for quite a while which was great. The staff said this was the best sightings they've had all year. Obviously sightings are not guaranteed. But what I noticed was the crew were determined for us to see something. They were very "on it" with finding wildlife and knew exactly where to go to get the best chance of sightings. I would recommend using this company as everything was great and there were other ships in the area but we were the first to see a Whale. All the ships are in contact with each other so if one ship sees something they will tell our ship and vice versa. Please note that the tours are sometimes cancelled due to weather; no fault of their own. Just be aware that you might need to be flexible. However, you can keep an eye on their website to see if the tour is on or not, and can book up to 1 hour in advance. The crew also take photos which you can get for free. Overall, a day we'll never forget!

A friendly crew and a knowledgeable, qualified and enthusiastic guide Estel Sanchez who rightly can be called an environmental educator helped to make the trip truly memorable. The whole team are doing excellent work not only showing nature but helping to preserve our precious sea life.

We were told that we had been very lucky in our sightings which included four humpbacks and at least ten minkes. We were also lucky with the weather - grey clouds thinning and the sun appearing on the horizon as well as calm waters.

As an extra after-tour service, you can receive photos taken by the crew (83 on our trip) as well as a short written report.

The photos are spectacular and will help keep the wonderful memories alive.

The things we liked: the boat was nice and seating was comfortable, there was a bar onboard, they give out Dramamine for sea sickness, the MC was knowledgeable.

Things we weren’t too big on: it was really cold, even sitting inside, we really didn’t see much. That being said, they can’t control weather or wildlife, but I think the experience as a whole wasn’t worth the price we paid.

Dear B3092BXmaggiew, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us. We're sad to hear that you were disappointed with the tour and sightings. As the tour is operated in Iceland's biggest bay (during all seasons), it is bound to be colder at sea than it is on land, but that's why we offer heated indoor areas as well as warm overalls which you can borrow for free during the tour. There's even a great selection of hot beverages to purchase at the onboard bar. This is of course a wildlife tour, as you so rightfully pointed out, and as such there are no guarantees. We try our best to make the journey pleasant and provide interesting information along the way without boring our guests in facts. Sorry if this was not the case here. We truly hope you enjoyed your time with us and seeing the wildlife and views on the horizon. All the best, The Elding team

We were so pleased that the weather broke and that the trip was going ahead. I had been following the whale diary for about a month prior and the weather had out paid to several trips during January. We set off in clear skies and beautiful sunshine but this soon disappeared however didn’t detract from the trip. The crew were very professional and courteous and Megan who was in the main watchtower was an absolute font of all things flying and swimming. We saw seals , porpoises and dolphins plus lots of birds but alas no bigger creatures which was a shame but that’s the luck of the draw. The excitement is being out on the water in the hope of seeing something at any given moment. Great trip, well organised with knowledgable professional crew. Would do again in a heartbeat
Thanks all

We had a fantastic experience with Elding on the classic whale watching tour. It was a calm and foggy day with very poor visibility but the marine biologist and crew on board knew where to look for whales and we were rewarded with being able to observe 2 humpback whales on our trip. The whales came very close to the boat and one demonstrated bubble feeding. With both the whales seen we were the first boat to find them then others followed, we were told that there is a code of conduct of only two boats in the area of a whale at a time and this was respected each time. We were also really pleased that our boys aged 8 and 5 were given lifejackets to wear while on board the boat and there was plenty of room to move around outside where we stayed or go inside if wanted.

We liked the trip and company so much that when we got off we booked the classic puffin tour as well. This was also very good and we loved seeing the puffins and other seabirds including Gannets, Eider ducks, Falmers and Guillemots. The boat was much smaller than the whale trip but our boys were still able to have a choice of inside/outside and enjoyed standing at the front of the boat when we reached the puffin area and turned the engines off. The marine biologists helped our eldest son identify an array of birds and were very knowledgeable.

We booked online and had changed from premium to the classic whale watching with no problem at all which was really nice.
We booked online in advance.
Validate your ticket at the desk and then walk down to the boat.
There is a small museum and shop before you get on the boat.

These trips are so dependant on the day but we had it quite good! We saw dolphins and loads of whales. It was lovely to see. The boat has a person commentating and telling you about the animals and where to look! The boat will stop at a good place to see the whales.

They have the upper deck which is where we sat - get on early for a good space. It gets cold out on the water so I would say wear a hat, gloves and jumper! I was cold with 3 layers on and a hat and gloves and it wasn’t raining and it was july!

If it does get too much there is an inside bit downstairs which also has a little shop doing hot drinks!

Toilets are also available and were pretty clean.

There is someone on the boat taking ‘proper’ photos as it was quite difficult to get a good shot with the boat moving! They send you them for free if you email them afterwards.

After 3 hours we had had a super time. I would recommend.

We booked this trip as part of our long weekend in Reykjavik at the beginning of June. We set pretty low expectations as we had a whale obsessed 9yo with us and didn’t want him to be disappointed. After a morning at the whale museum and lunch/ ice cream nearby we set off on our trip. Top tip- there is free parking in front of the maritime museum. The weather was cold, with some rain, but nothing proper clothing couldn’t deal with. The overalls and blankets provided also helped. We were glad we took a seasickness tablet the hour before we went as there was a bit of swell. There was an expert guide on board who pointed out interesting sights and we found a pod of harbour porpoise on our way to a humpback sighting and a close encounter with a second one. The experience was amazing and something my son will never forget. The online whale diary and photos also gave us something to remember it by as we were too in the moment / worried about hanging on to the boat to take any photos ourselves. It was the best birthday present ever, thank you to Eline and the crew!

Amazing trip, we were very lucky to see so many whales up close and a school of dolphins playing nearby. Two humpbacks decided to feed right next to us and gave us a show including jumping out of the water!

Decent sized boat with lots of room even with excited kids running around. Was a clear day but even so quite rocky. Be prepared to hold on - pretend you’re on a ski slope to balance yourself it’s quite fun! They offer free sickness pills at the ticket booth so recommend taking one before you board.

Great, knowledgable guide and crew, gave us regular updates and lots of interesting information about the mammals and the area.

Summer is meant to be the best time to see them!

Jun 2022 • Family
My family had an amazing time going whale watching! We asked for a family friendly boat because we are traveling with our baby, and everyone suggested Elding. They had 3 indoor areas that were warm where we could look out to sea, in addition to 3 or more outdoor areas with some seating on the top deck. The guide was giving out great information during the journey like Greek mythology stories about Icelandic whales, or information on how to spot them. Staff were super friendly and gave us tips on keeping our baby safe, and gave us a blanket for him. They were also really animal friendly, as they did not overcrowd the animals. There was a group of 5-7 boats around a humpback whale, and our guide mentioned we should not go that direction and add to the craziness for sake of the animal. We actually then found our own humpback whale, and also saw a few minke whales, dolphins, and puffins! I’m pretty sure our voyage lasted an extra 20 minutes because they wanted to give us a chance to see the humpback whale come up a few more times. I highly recommend this tour! We weren’t sure if it would be worth it to go, but so glad we did!!
