We went in early September after the puffins had left for the winter. We already knew they'd gone but Gentle Giants also informed us, which meant more time for whale watching.

The weather was glorious and the sea was very calm, not your typical day in Husavik but we'll take it. Now it's not guaranteed that you will see any whales as it's nature and if they're there, they're there. We were in luck and saw 3 whales in total, sailing alongside them, but respectfully keeping our distance, as they swam and dived for food. We saw each of the whales dive maybe 4 or 5 times. It was incredible. Our German guide, Thorsten ? was very knowledgeable and funny and the captain of the rib, Halle ? did a great job at the wheel, quickly taking us near to the whales once each of them had been spotted. He also took us to see some seals and a lovely cliff waterfall.
Thoroughly recommended.
If you do go, please help out in trying to look for the whales, they could be anywhere around you. The more eyes the better.

The boat ride was very fun. Talking the rib boat was the best option because we always had a great view of the whales and were able to travel fast to find another one. Our guide Rui was also great! He answered all our questions and made the ride very enjoyable.

I felt very safe in the RIB boat and was glad I had selected that option. We had an excellent Icelandic captain and knowledgeable French marine biologist as our guide. We were extremely lucky to see a humpback whale three times and also a blue whale that our captain tracked. We know there was some luck involved in our visit. Gentle Giants had advised that we postpone from the day prior due to poor weather, which we did. Recommend scheduling a few days in or near Husavik to get the best possible weather and chance of whale sightings.

Thank you very much for taking the time to write us this review. We are very glad you enjoyed the trip and had the luck to see a humpback but also a blue whale. As you said we never know what we are going to encounter in the bay, as those animals are wild and free to roam where they want. We are happy also to know you enjoyed the work of our captain and guide. It was a pleasure to have you on board with us. All the best to you, Joséphine.

I did a LOT of research before booking a whale watching excursion in Iceland and came to the conclusion that the very best place to have a chance to actually see whales was in Husavik. There are a number of companies in Husavik who offer tours but ultimately, I was impressed by the website and the TripAdvisor reviews for Gentle Giants and ended up booking our trip with them. We were not disappointed.

First, I want to make it clear that while Husavik is an amazing place to go whale watching, we were there on August 9, 2022, which is, within the peak time for whale watching and at the tail end of the puffin season. We ended up seeing A LOT of whales (all of which were Humpback Whales) but my understanding is that may not be the case at other times during the year. I encourage everyone to do their own research on this to find out the best times of the year to take a tour.

1. Booking Process

Booking a tour through Gentle Giants was super easy. I booked our tour through the website once I was fairly confident that the weather was going to cooperate. The website is easy to use, and I was able to book our tour with ease. I will also say that I had sent a couple of inquiries into the website prior to booking and got responses in a very prompt manner.

If you are as concerned as I was about not missing out on a tour, I will say the following... I was super concerned about the weather and so I waited until the day before we took the tour to book it and had no trouble finding space for a family of 4. I know that everyone says, "book early" in Iceland, but even during peak tourist season, Gentle Giants had PLENTY of tours going out every single day and plenty of spots available within 24 hours of "departure". Now... the more people that are on your tour, the harder it might be, but if you have a group of 4 or less, you should be able to book a tour even if you wait until the day before you want to go.

2. Getting There

If you have rented a car and are driving around in Iceland, Husavik is very easy to get to and is approximately an hour northeast of Akureyri. It was an easy drive but be aware that there is a toll tunnel that you go through as you leave Akureyri heading toward Husavik on the ring road. I am pretty sure you can avoid the tunnel, but the fee is pretty nominal, and I think you have to go pretty far afield to avoid using it. Husavik itself is located on Route 85 (which is paved) and Gentle Giants main building/desk is located basically in the center of Husavik right off of route 85. It is VERY easy to spot once you get into town and will be on your left if you are coming from Akureyri. Gentle Giants website has suggested parking in the free lots behind the very beautiful little church that sits across the street from the main building, and we were able to find parking there without any trouble. The parking area was about a 1-minute walk from the main building/desk.

3. Staff

The staff at Gentle Giants were amazing. The ladies at the desk were friendly and helpful and the folks on the boat were amazing. Our tour guide was Josephine who was extremely friendly and knowledgeable about the wildlife we saw on the trip. She is a marine biologist and had a wealth of information to share with us during the trip. We were very grateful to have her as our tour guide and would recommend her specifically to anyone who is taking a Gentle Giants tour.

4. The Tour

Our tour was amazing. I chose to take the speed boat "Big Whale and Puffin Safari" despite the fact that the boats are smaller, and my wife has a tendency to get motion sickness. Nonetheless, she took some Dramamine, and she was fine during the tour. I will say that Husavik is located in a bay area and so somewhat sheltered from the big waves that they warn you about down on the south coast. When we left the bay, the water was extremely calm and even when we got hit with some wind and rain toward the end of the trip, it never got particularly rough.

The speed boat that we were on was named the Amma Sigga and was able to seat approximately 20 people. The seats are basically "saddle style" seats where you can choose when to stand up and when to sit down. I enjoyed it because it allows you to comfortably sit down while the boat is moving, but quickly stand up when it is not. We were able to get seats right up at the front of the boat, but truthfully, the boats are small enough that there is no "bad" seat on the boat. Obviously, we did not take a tour on one of the "big" boats, so I can't provide a comparison, but I REALLY enjoyed being on the speed boat.

So far as the tour itself, we went to the puffin island as soon as we left the dock. The island itself is beautiful and we saw a LOT of Puffins flying around, floating in the water and nesting on the side of the island. NOTE: the puffins are wild animals and don't really like the boat so while you can see lots of them, if you are looking to get one of those "super close up" photos you see on the internet, you had better bring a camera with a good telescopic lens. Again... we were there towards the tail end of puffin season (which ends in August), so if you book a tour at other times of the year, you need to check to see if the puffins are nesting.

Finally, and most importantly, we saw whales... lots of them. All of the whales we saw were humpbacks, but they were all beautiful and it was super exciting every time we saw one breach and spout into the air. I'm not really sure how many we saw because there were quite a few and it's hard to keep track of just how many times you are seeing the same animal, but I would venture a guess that there were probably 5-10 whales (maybe more). Personally, my favorite part is when they go for a dive, and you get to see the tail go up into the air (which I got to see MANY times over). While the boats do a very good job getting you as close to the animals as they can, please remember that these are still wild animals and so the distance between the boat and the surfacing animal can vary wildly. Regardless, we got to see a number of whales at VERY close range (as close as 25-30 feet away).

As a bonus, we also got to see some pods of dolphins who had babies with them. The tiny dolphins were super cute, and it was exciting to see them breach the surface right next to their mothers. Josephine indicated that she believed the babies to be approximately a month old based on their size.

Overall, our whale watching experience with Gentle Giants was absolutely perfect. While I will admit that my review is slightly colored by the fact that we got to see so many whales and dolphins, that does not change the fact that this company does a GREAT JOB and I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone. We loved Gentle Giants and I think you will too.

We allowed ourselves not to worry too much about seeing whales. The whales do to work for us and are in their natural habitat going about their business. The rib boat is quite exciting and out captain and guide were fun. After waiting for over an hour we saw a porpoise, minke whales, and 5 dolphins who played and swan at the bow of our boat. There were also quite a few sea birds. And of course the view. Though we did not see a humpback, our hearts were full and we were quite emotional after seeing these beautiful creatures.

The rib boat was perfect for this trip. We were all soon laughing as we traveled over calm waves. We were fortunate enough see dolphins, puffins and several whales. The guide was extremely knowledgeable and the ships captain was fantastic at manoeuvring the boat quickly when a whale was spotted. Take hats and gloves.

From beginning to end the whole trip was flawless. The young lady who was our guide was extremely helpful and very knowledgeable. She helped everyone into their gear and rather than just handing stuff out gave little tips on how to make the trip more comfortable.

Although late in the Puffin season we still got to see lots of them. As for whales we were lucky enough to see and follow two, a Minky and Humpback. The guide was good enough to move my young kids round the boat so that they didn't get splashed too much when the boat was travelling around the bay.As the trip stayed in the bay the sea wasn't too choppy even though it was quite windy.

The advantage of being in the rib boats was their speed. As soon as a whale was spotted the boat could race over. The larger more typical sailing boats are much slower so there is the risk by the time these have caught up the whale has dived back down again.

It's better to pay that little bit extra and go in the rib boats as it gives you more chance of seeing the whales up close.

My kids were a little unsure and nervous before going out by the end they loved it.

It would have been nice to see a few more different species though clearly it all dependent on what is out there in the forst place, and at least we got to see some in their natural habitat..
