      An unforgettable experience
This was a tour that had very personal significance for me. It certainly gave me a lasting impression and great respect for both the people of Crete and the soldiers involved in this time of war. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and handled the day with commendable sensitivity combined with warmth and humour.

Ask for Thanisis as your guide!
Thanisis is an excellent, informative guide. We made several stops at unplanned locations so he can educate us about the terrain, the natural plants, life and foods, and we even got to see some men harvesting olives, which was not planned. All of the food we tasted was excellent, come hungry. It ends with a spectacular lunch that’s a real spread, with wine. This was a highlight of my trip to Chania.

      Well worth the money.
Knowledgeable guide, comfortable transport, good coverage of the Maleme/Chania battlefield, including Hill 107. Much easier than trying to do it yourself.

Exceptional tour with an exceptional guide
Yianis was one of the best and safest minibus drivers we have had. He is an excellent knowledgeable guide. He made the tour outstanding! The commentary and Knowledge about the life on Crete was fantastic. Yianis knows lots of facts about the food and plants and village life. Excellent English. The 6 hour tour was paced well and the cost included a coffee stop with Greek coffee or mountain tea and cheese pie, cheese tasting, a bakery and olive oil and raki tasting and a Greek lunch. A 5 star tour in a small minibus sized group is not to be missed.

WW2 Crete Tour - Great tour of Crete in general and WW2 Battle events
We spent all day with George who runs Niriis Tours. George picked up at the cruise ship port and delivered us back on time. We toured the island and had a great lunch in the country side in addition to a very detailed WW2 tour. George took us to a private museum with lots of items from the battle that has been recovered on Crete as well as the cemetery where the allied casualties are buried. The tour also included a trip to the airport that was the focus of the German paratrooper attack. George is an expert on all of the history and the island, great resource.

      Fabulous, friendly and fun tour.
Yanna took us on a fabulous tour of small villages in Crete. We ate our way across a beautiful landscape, sampling coffee, tea, cheeses, yogurt, fresh baked bread and cookies, followed by a delicious lunch and of course, raki! Our guide was knowledgeable, friendly and fun! A great day and a great way to learn more about Crete.

      Day Trip From Chania
Lovely day. Nice to get out of town and see the country. Diverse activities/stop. Alex was an excellent guide. Very comfortable small bus. Only blemish on the day was to malfunction of the bus PA/microphone. Those of us in the rear, missed out on most of the narration.

Samaria Gorge guided hike is a MUST DO
Our guided hike through Samaria Gorge was incredible. It is wonderful to have a guide along the way to explain the history of the region and navigate the hike and the steps after- Elia was an excellent hiking guide and the hike was a once-in-a-lifetime experience! And to have a driver take you exactly to the hiking point and pick you up from the ferry with water waiting to quickly beat the queue made everything so convenient and luxe- Giannis was a pro and very knowledgeable on the history of the island. Absolutely exceptional service and worth every penny- this is a MUST DO experience!

Most memorable and must-have experience in Chania, owned and operated by a local family from the village of Melidoni for generations. We stayed near the old port and were picked up close to our hotel by their knowledgeable English speaking driver/guide Nikos who taught us a lot about Chania and Crete on the way there and back. The ride was 40min but well worth it to get out to the countryside up a mountain with gorgeous views overlooking the north of Crete. The experience started with a welcome raki drink at the historic family home impeccably maintained. Chef instructor is the mother/wife Adamandia who is super friendly and knowledgeable. We visited the garden and prepared the stuffed vegetables (zucchini, tomatoes, potatoes, peppers and mulberry leaves stuffed with herbed rice). We then fed the neighboring sheep, tasted local cheese and wine including a very special family heritage wine. The father/husband Giorgos led our wine tasting and his family has owned the property for generations. We then prepared the dough from scratch and made traditional Cretan pies (like dumplings) stuffed with cheese or spinach/scallion. This tour is not at all a commercialized package, but very authentic and artisanal, owned and operated by the family with generations of history in the village. The house is like a museum and even has a traditional wooden hand loom and sample fabric on display, and a little house with many interesting artifacts and antiques from the family collection. Adamandia fried the pies very nicely and the stuffed vegetables were ready from the oven, and we enjoyed the most relaxing meal (with additional pork stew and salad prepared by Adamandia) and local wine on the patio. The whole experience was very enriching but also relaxing and not rushed. We are 2 adults and 2 teenagers age 15/17 and we highly recommend this experience and would trust any tour offered by GS Tours Chania.

Thank you so much for your detailed and glowing review of The Real Cretan Cooking Experience! We’re thrilled to hear that you found the tour to be both unique and authentic. It’s wonderful to know that you enjoyed the scenic drive, the warm welcome from the family, and the hands-on cooking with Adamandia. We’re glad Nikos could share his knowledge about Chania and Crete, and that you appreciated the family’s rich heritage and the traditional Cretan dishes you prepared. It’s fantastic to hear that the experience was enriching, relaxing, and enjoyable for your entire family. A superb experience and the highlight of our holiday. Our guide Yiannis arrived on the dot to pick us up from out hotel and did a great job introducing the group of seventeen to one another and breaking the ice.

The mountain location is breathtaking, we loved feeding the goats and sheep and the talk on the families olive production. A good deal of thought has gone into this tour. It’s excellent value for money with quality ingredients and a host of family members ensuring the cooking demonstration goes smoothly. Yiannis is a constant presence, translating, helping out with recipes and bringing the history of the house and the island of Crete to life with his exceptional passion and knowledge.

We loved this experience, our hosts were lovely and we learnt so much about Cretan culture and history as well as the hands on cookery experience. The location in the mountains is literally breathtaking. From pick up to drop off, every detail was the perfect combination of professional but also authentic and did not feel overly commercial, despite the fact this is of course an experience for tourists.
It was enjoyable spending time with people from other countries and Yannis, our guide was so proficient at switching between languages as he communicated with group members.
The final meal prepared by the group and cooked by the hosts was delicious and we look forward to re-creating the dishes at home as we have received the recipes via email.
Many thanks to Yannis for making this such a great experience for the whole group.

Our opinion on this Cretan cooking activity is mixed. Already, expect to spend at least an hour (in our case 1 hour 10 minutes) in a minibus while you pick up all the participants from their hotels, and then travel to the mountain village where the workshop takes place. We were the only French people, otherwise all the participants were Americans (and a lady from Singapore). You will prepare the different dishes, but then they are taken to a kitchen so you will not see the cooking. You will be taken into the village by the guide to feed the goats and explain to you how olive oil is made using a fake oil press.
Then at dinner time the guide went over the whole history of Crete, in English, and we had a little trouble following (we speak bad English, that's our fault), it was very, very long. for us.
We returned to our hotel at 11 p.m. (we left at 3:50 p.m.).
Impression that this workshop is aimed at an audience that is older, wealthier and less accustomed to cooking than us.
To do it again, we wouldn't do it again.
    We didn't learn much.
Please note, great kindness from everyone.

This tour had it all. An authentic Cretan cooking class, inside of a 145 year family home who were very welcoming, wine tasting, an amazing host and guide, history, feeding the local farm animals, amazing company, and a scenery that I won't forget that you can only find in Crete. Plus all this was just 30 or so minutes out of Chania so if you are in the area, and you want a little something extra along with cooking, you really need to experience this.

My wife and I had a great time in Crete. It was the highlight of the three islands we visited, Crete, Santorini and Mykonos. Each island had it's own charactoristic, but Crete wasn't based on tourism, it had a very vibrant culture, it's people proud of that and wonderfully fresh locally grown fruits and vegetables made their restaurants amazing. I stayed in Elounda at the Blue Palace, a great hotel with beautiful scenery , huge rooms with a private pool. My wife and I visited a family farm which was a highlight of the vacation. The farm was handed down in the family and was cared for by grandchildren, uncles, aunts and cousins. There was traditional dances, music and food we helped prepare, and a lot of conversation. It was a great time and experience. The restaurants in Agios Nikolaos, very close by, were great. Our trip to Spinolonga, an island across from Elounda was educational as well as beautiful. There was so much more of the Island we would love to come back to again, it is a much larger Island and has very diverse areas we missed.

Our guide, Giannis, was on-time picking us up at a Chania hotel and made the short journey to the site of our cooking experience interesting with various Greek life stories. The location was beautiful and our host family was warm and welcoming. Our group of twenty prepared a majority of the food we eventually ate later in the evening. Be prepared to participate as this is a hands-on activity and be assured you will be shown exactly what to do. We were very appreciative of the early morning message sent to bring jackets as temperatures that night were chilly. When they learned I did not drink wine, they brought a glass of “juice” that I think was apricot nectar which reminded me of my childhood favorite drink.

So much fun in the small group at a locals house we prepared dishes we saw throughout our trip! Fun and educational we saw antiques and learned stories and tasted wines made from their grapes. Nicholas was our driver and translator for the whole experience! Unforgettable!💕😋
