What to expect
Meet a driver at your hotel in Porto for the trip to the Douro Valley. Continue to Pinhão, where you have time to explore the beautiful village on your own, from the surrounding vineyards to the distinctive blue-and-white tile murals. If you selected the Douro River cruise, this is where you board a Rabelo, a traditional cargo boat long used for Douro River transport. The leisurely ride takes you up a Tua River tributary and past Quinta da Romaneira winery, and then loops back to Pinhão. Either before or after your cruise (if you've upgraded), pop into one of the wineries on the agenda for the day before lunch.  For lunch, sit down to a lunch of traditional Douro cuisine paired with local wines at a popular restaurant, and then visit another estate for tastings of award-winning ports and wines. The tour concludes with a return trip to Porto.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND
An AMAZING experience with Isa who, from pick up outside our Airbnb, was so friendly, welcoming, warm and full of pertinent and interesting information which made the whole trip so worthwhile! The drive was comfortable with a mix of friendly and informative conversation up into the mountains and the valley with wonderful views the whole way. Once to the valley, WOW, the views were spectacular! The first winery had the views as well and a friendly guide, Marta, with DELICIOUS wines, olive oil and honey all grown/made on site. Hesitant to leave it was onto the river boat tour which was sooo relaxing and scenic. Then it was onto a local traditional restaurant that can also accommodate vegetarian/vegan (made up a wonderful pasta dish for the hubby off menu) that came with wine, fresh bread and local olive oil, main dish and dessert for an incredible price (because we were with the tour company) and it also had the views over the town, river and vineyards on the hillsides as well. The last winery was more focused on Ports with lots of info, more views, the fun Maria with Isa to give tons more info and great tastings with tasty snacks and lots of conversation and laughing. The way back to Porto was comfortable conversation as we’d definitely made a friend in Isa along with all the beauty, info and of course wine shared throughout the day. Have already been telling all our friends and family about this tour (and others from Cool Tours and especially Isa!!)! Unforgettable!!

A Must Do when in Porto!
What a fabulous day we had exploring the Duoro Valley with some wine and port tasting, despite the rain! Beautiful countryside with autumnal colours, fabulous wine and port tasting and and enjoyable river cruise
Our tour guide was Violetta, a very helpful, knowledgable and enthusiastic guide. During our day she shared interesting background history of the country and the region plus explanations of the port and wine production processes of the region.
We were collected at our hotel at 8:30 in a comfortable mini van. Just the 2 of us on this tour. IWe first visited Pinhao, to view the beautiful tiles at the local railway station and a coffee before heading to our first tasting at a local olive oil and wine producer. Lovely wines and an introduction to bread, olive oil and honey! Yes it works! And yes, we bought some wines to be shipped home for us. After a very filling and wholesome lunch of a meat and bean stew and battered fish and chips (no room for the dessert and coffee) we had an hour river cruise, enjoying the picturesque countryside of hills, vineyards and autumnal colours (and the break in the rain).
Next it was off to a small port producer, Quinta Santa Eufemia, and a lovely lady, Maria, took us through the tasting of their white wine, a rose port (yes, rose), 2 white ports, 1 ruby and 2 tawny ports, accompanied, by a few savoury and sweet snacks.
Then it was time for a nap on the drive back to Porto! Back in Porto for 6:30pm
Obrigada Violetta and Cool Tours. We had a very memorable day in the Douro Valley. Sue & Glenn

Go for it, without a doubt!

We spent a whole month in Porto, and this trip was one of the best experiences during this time. Douro Valley itself is a beauty, but Pedro (our tour guide) made it even better. Everything was really well planned, perfect level of information (not too packed, not too little) and really entertaining :) We enjoyed the day a LOT!

Truly fantastic - if you have a spare day in Porto use it for this tour
Sep 2020
This was one of the highlights of my trip, for sure. Porto, the city, is lovely and a great place to spend a weekend, but taking a day to venture further out than the city was one of the best decisions we made. The UNESCO protected scenery is breathtaking and our tour guide was really informative and a lot of fun. We were picked up from our guesthouse door in a comfortable van (everyone wore masks and it was sanitized), then visited two vineyards - one of which had an olive oil museum within it that we visited (the olive oil is delicious!), while the other was in the middle of harvesting and processing the grapes that we were very grateful to be able to witness (apparently, September is the month for this, so we chose our visit well!). The wine and port we tasted in both vineyards were delicious. The river cruise was also really great.

The restaurant that we had lunch in had the traditional choice of a meat, fish or vegetarian dish.

Violetta was our tour guide and she mad the experience incredible! We had a loooot of wine and port, delicious food and all the explanation of the region.
Our group was so nice that we ended up having drinks afterwards.
Violetta knew soooo much about the history of the country and the vineyards, it was a pleasure to listen to her all the way through. She was soooo nice, warm, friendly and polite.

Best tour ever, best guide ever and best day ever. We leave Porto with our hearts full of joy and happiness!!
Thank you sooooo much! Best Sunday ever♥️

Take this tour! If not, you will regret it.
Sep 2020
Highlight of the trip to Porto. Violeta was our guide- from the beginning of the day to the end, she had creative energy that gave our group a buzz to get going and stay going. Everyone felt like they left the trip with a friend, not just a guide. In addition to Violeta's chemistry with her clients (and vast knowledge spanning not only wine, but art history and history in general!), the vineyards also provided interesting information, but most importantly-- delicious snacks and wine. The lunch stop was also lovely. Take this trip if you want a memorable experience that is not a run of the mill tourist trap.

(I have been coming back and forth to Portugal for 6 years and live in Lisbon.)

A brilliant day!
Such an awesome day with Violetta guiding us around the wine and port estates! She definitely makes the trip - super friendly, warm, natural and knowledgeable! Also times everything just right, not too long at each stop but long enough to try quite a few wines and ports! Really felt like we were seeing the heart of Porto - we had visited Graham’s a few days before which is also great but very commercial versus family run and local. Would absolutely recommend booking this tour! Pick up was around 8.30 and then we were dropped back at 6ish - both of which was from our hotel so incredibly convenient. The whole experience was smooth, relaxing and informative! Thank you Violetta :)

Best Experience in Porto
Sep 2020 • Couples
This was the best experience we had during our stay in Porto. Isa was such a lovely and knowledgeable guide! She did not only educate us on wine and the region but also about Portuguese culture and history. Besides that she had a positive spirit and a great sense of humor. The wine and views were amazing, a must see.
As for covid guidelines everyone kept their distance, wore mouth masks and there was hand sanitizer at every stop. We felt safe during the whole trip. I would advice everyone visiting Porto to take this tour!

Love from Louisa and Derrick from Curaçao
