    What You'll Do

Begin your evening in historic Alfama or Mouraria, the characteristic neighbourhoods in the medieval quarter of the city where this traditional folk music was born and enjoy an evening of music and delicious food at a spot that's loved by locals!

Head to one of Lisbon's most famous casa de fados, where you can hear professional fado singers sing this hauntingly beautiful music while you enjoy dinner. Or, if you'd prefer to really get off the beaten path, visit one of the area's tiny taverns which have been around for decades where locals play for one another for a truly authentic experience after you've enjoyed dinner at a nearby restaurant.

Your Local Host will take you to spots which you wouldn't find in a guidebook, where the locals really go to play fado themselves or sip the local cherry liqueur while they listen to others in the neighbourhood sing.

Spend time getting to know your Local Host, who will be able to recommend other spots to taste the best local dishes and regional specialities, as well as share with you other bars in the city you could visit to listen to fado on another night as well as giving you recommendations for the rest of your stay in Lisbon.

    What To Expect
    * Join a Local Host for an evening listening to fado, the traditional Portuguese folk music and enjoying some authentic local food
    * Head to a casa de fado, where you can enjoy a meal during a fado show
    * Or, if you'd prefer, let your local recommend an authentic neighbourhood restaurant and head to a tiny tavern afterwards to listen to fado, in true local style!
    * Discover where the best fado bars in the city are, that you won't find in a guidebook
    * Hear this beautiful music in the historic neighbourhood that it was born in

    Gebta, our guide was outstanding.
Genta.speaks excellent English and conveyed to us many interesting historical facts during our walking tour to attractions around Baixa. She has a wonderful and enjoyable personality. On one of our rest stops we had the famous Pasel da Tata, hot out of the oven!. Genta also gave us suggestions for things to do on our own and a great restaurant recommendation too. Genta's tour far exceeded our expectations.

Delicious, informative, fun and locals only!
Picture this: it's my birthday, and my husband and I have just arrived in Portugal for the very first time, straight off the Sud Express overnight train from Paris to Lisbon. Our host, Gabriele, meets us in our hotel lobby and whisks us off in a cab to a locals-only pastry shop to taste those emblematic pasteis de nata. No queues down the road, just hot dark strong coffee and totally delicious little pastries, served up immediately. Gabriele takes us around her Lisbon, stopping off for great views and great food in several places she knows personally. Shortly after we signed up for this private food tour on Trip Advisor we received an email asking us what we liked and what we were looking to do on the tour. We had said that we were wine buffs and experienced chefs and Gabriele came up trumps for us. She took us to the oldest restaurant in Lisbon for traditional pasteis de bacalhau, then to a brilliant wine bar where we had a private wine tasting with delicious nibbles. Along the way she described some of the sights of the city and pointed out places of interest for us to visit later. In one backstreet we tasted the homemade Ginjinha from a little lady with a table in the street! We finished off with a 3-course meal with wine in an out-of-the-way restaurant where we were pretty much the only foreigners - and where we had a great meal. In addition, I needed to find a jeweller's shop and Gabriele led us to one nearby, allowing us to experience even more of the sights, sounds and smells of Lisbon. We came away from our experience with full tummies, lots of photos, big smiles, and a definite desire to return to Lisbon. Thanks, Gabriele, for sharing your Lisbon and its food with us!

    A 4 hour guided/walking tour of Lisbon
I hired a tour guide through Cityunscripted.com. Her name was Genta and she turned out to be the best tour guide I’ve ever had. Besides tailoring our tour to my handicapped needs Genta was super patient, very friendly , intelligent and sweet too. We had so much fun getting to know her that we invited Genta to visit us in our home city offering her a place to stay. She has a PhD in art therapy, has lived in Lisbon since she was 15 (now 32) and has a genuine passion for learning and being a super focused teacher. Her love of meeting new people and sharing herself is beyond compare. Her company, cityunscripted , has a real gem in Genta. I felt like she was my own daughter and loved her so much. A great walking tour!

    Mutli cultural Lisbon with Gabriella
We enjoyed exploring streets and alleys we wouldn't have otherwise with Gabriella and learning how much more diverse than you would think Lisbon is and the influences from around you can see and taste in Lisbon. Saw some wonderful tiles through a "secret" door that you wouldn't know where there. I hope they get some protection soon. Also able practise my very rusty Hungarian toast! Gabriella is a lovely, welcoming host who I would recommend.

Great for tourists or business travelers with limited time
I had very limited time as I was on a business trip, and I don't like big tour groups so I decided for a 3-hour-private tour. AnnElisa was a fantastic local guide and showed me lots of places that a tourist would probably miss out on. She was also very attentive to my wishes and requests and was very knowledgeable about Lisbon and its history, but also its current hotspots and nightlife. It basically felt like walking through the city with a friend. Highly recommended!

    Connecting with Lisbon's soul
Lisbon is a wonderful and charming city, even on a rainy winter day! There's so much history and culture which is not really accessible for those who don't speak Portuguese and attractions which are amazing and not included in any English language guide book. My Local Host helped connecting to the real soul of the city and discover things I could have never found on my own. Plus, when travelling solo, it's nice to meet up with a friend for a chat and a laugh!
