Overview
Perfect for first-time visitors, this guided walking tour takes you to the major sites of central Lisbon. As you follow your local guide, you will get great insight into the city's history and culture. Experience old Lisbon by walking around the Moorish Alfama neighborhood (the city’s oldest quarter). Admire the Eden Theatre, Sé de Lisboa cathedral and the cafes and boutiques of the elegant Chiado neighborhood. Numbers are limited to 16 people on this guided walking tour, ensuring you'll receive personalized attention from your guide.
Highlights
  • Comprehensive overview of Lisbon with in-depth commentary from a guide
  • Visit places inaccessible by coach on a walking tour
  • Come to a deeper understanding of Lisbon than if exploring independently
  • Taste a traditional pastel de nata pastry at a local bakery
What to Expect
Meet your guide and group at Praça de D. Pedro IV Square—also known as Rossio Square—located in central Lisbon. Listen to a short introduction to get oriented, and hear about the history of the square, built with native Portuguese stones. Take in the sights, sounds, and aromatic smells from restaurants as you follow your guide through Restauradores Square and down Liberdade Avenue to see an important obelisk and plenty of examples of Portuguese art deco architecture, including the Eden Theatre. Check out Rossio Central Station and learn the details of the 19th-century engineering marvel that is the tunnel to Sintra. Next up are Carmo Square and the Chiado neighborhood, where you split up for some free time to explore independently (with recommendations from your guide on which local boutiques, restaurants, and bookstores are worth a visit). Meet back up with the group at an arranged time for a ride on the vintage tram (tickets included in the tour price). Hear the history of the tram system while enjoying the ride with the locals who use it for their daily commute, then hop off in the Moorish quarter of Alfama. As you explore, learn about the tradition of fado music, stopping to peek into fado restaurants and performance spaces you would ordinarily walk right by. The tour’s last stops are the oldest cathedral in Lisbon, Sé de Lisboa, and the grand Commerce Square (Praça do Comércio). After your guide’s final history lesson, get insider suggestions on where to explore further and say goodbye to your group.

This really is a good tour. Relaxed, informative and funny. Just enough information presented in a clear entertaining way. Our guide, Sebastian, has such a great knowledge of his city. It was a real pleasure and an excellent introduction to Lisbon . Highly recommended .
