  • There are two different starting locations. (Rijksmuseum or Central Station) Please make sure you go to the right one!
  • Due a lot of traffic at the dock, I can't wait more than 5 minutes. Please make sure you are at the dock 10 minutes before departure.
  • A fairly big step needs to be taken to get in the boat. Ofcourse I will assist you.
  • When a lot of rain is predicted I will try to get a covered boat. This might impact the visibility, but keep us dry. On heavily rainy days, rescheduling or refunding is ofcourse possible.
  • I always try to give the best tour possible (5*). But in rare occasion things don't go as you and me would like. Please let me know asap. Aither direct or send me an email of text. I will contact you.
  • The tour is a historical canal cruise, it is not a booze cruise. So if you are looking for a bachelor party boat or any other booze cruise. Just contact me. And I can arrange that for you on a private boat.
  • Captain Jack is collaboration between friends. Captain Jack is not perse himself on the boat.
  • Depending on the route you will see an interesting selection of highlights of Amsterdam.
  • Not hen, stag or drinking party suitable! If you are looking for that. Look for something else!
  • Be aware, on the water it can be colder than in the street. Make sure you have a coat with you.
  • Most travellers can participate
  • This experience requires good weather. If it’s cancelled due to poor weather, you’ll be offered a different date or a full refund

Most fun trip ever!
This is an absolute MUST if you visit Amsterdam.

This was me and my friends’ only night in Amsterdam and choosing this activity was the best decision. We had a great social and interactive night with unlimited drinks and snacks. The captain gave us an amazing overview of the city’s history, interesting buildings, spiced with humour and fun facts.

Highly recommend booking the evening time slot, you get the best sunset and nighttime views.

Very enjoyable cruise with drinks and snacks!
James was a super tour guide and boat pilot! There was a laid back vibe from the moment we stepped on the boat with its comfy cushions and big bowls of ‘help yourself’ drinks and snacks.

A former copywriter, James now clearly enjoys welcoming tourists from all around the world and bringing the surroundings to life with his tales and stories. Although the price initially sounded more than other tours, we really enjoyed the beers, cheeses, nuts etc so can thoroughly recommend this tour!

Don’t hesitate, book this canal cruise!

The cruise was a blast and booking it for 6:00 pm meant that we saw the city in the sunlight, sunset, and all lit up at night. It was a wonderful time and Captain James absolutely amazing. He created a great atmosphere and provided so much interesting and fun information. The included snacks and beverages were plentiful and a good spread of options. Overall, I would highly recommend booking this canal cruise!

Unfortunate experience

Unfortunately, we had a substitute captain - a young fellow that has lived in Amsterdam his whole life. He was very nice but we wanted more history (kind of the point of this type of tour) and, after reading the reviews of Captain Jack, we were really looking forward to that and a little entertainment. Looking at the list of, like, 30 sites we'd be passing, we were only told about 6 of them- one being the mayor's house which isn't a historical site. Then, we had to listen to him complain about her policies. Later on, he proceeded to talk about the housing prices going up because of Air BnBs and the cap of the number of days you can rent your place, how it's too crowded with tourists, etc. I don't think anyone else realized it but he was basically insulting all of us on the boat who were, well, tourists. It wasn't malicious, I just don't think he realized what he was saying and others were asking him things like where do locals hang out? Which then meant the tour got even more sidetracked away from actual history and interesting facts about what we were seeing. Without context, the buildings start to look the same and it was just an hour and 15 minutes (not even as long as it was supposed to be because we waited for people who were late and then didn't even pay attention to a word he said). The drinks were nice, but we were skeptical of touching the snacks in a post-covid world where clearly no one learned anything and kept sticking their fingers in open containers. There were no serving pieces or bowls really to help keep it sanitary. So, sadly, it was just a boat float through the canals. If you're into actually learning about what you're seeing and history, go with Strommer where you can listen to the audio tour with real information.

Wonderful!
My friends and I thoroughly enjoyed Captain Jack and his tour. He was funny, kind, and knowledgeable about the city of Amsterdam. I’d highly recommend this canal tour since it’s budget friendly and provides a great view (and history lesson) of the city. Drinks and charcuterie were included, and that’s a great bonus!

Superior Service and Not A Huge Group
We arrived into Amsterdam early in the day and I booked this tour as our first on our arrival day due to the docks location to our hotel and because it was voted 2021 best. I wanted my guest to have the best feelings of Amsterdam on arrival and this cruise did not disappoint!

We are not big drinkers but the beers were nice and cold in the rear of the boat and that is where we sat! It ended up being the best placement on the boat my guest was really happy and drank 3 ice cold Heineken’s.

The day we arrived was likely one of the warmest Amsterdam has seen {24} in a good while and the cold beers were the perfect answer to the sunshine!

The captain (my apologies for forgetting his name but I am blaming the Heineken’s, not his skills or my memory!) was knowledge, quite funny and strived to see that everyone had an enjoyable time.

I highly recommend this tour if you want to avoid large crowds and have a enjoyable canal cruise in Amsterdam. Oh and if you think 90 minutes is long it goes by so quickly; we took a 60 min cruise a few days later and it just was not the same vibe / feel. I completely preferred the cruise with Captain Jack’s.

A fantastic fun and knowledgeable guide (Mark). This was an excellent way to learn about the history of Amsterdam whilst seeing the beauty of the area from the canals. The tour was a full 90 mins and gave a chance to get to know others on the boat. The views were incredible, the weather was perfect and I would def recommend going mid evening as with the sun starting to set the colours and lights all added to the atmosphere. The food snacks and drinks were unending. Lovely. Thank you so much Mark for making our first evening in Amsterdam so enjoyable.

Tour the Canals of Amsterdam with Captain Jack

My sister, her kids and I had a wonderful time on Jack’s Canal Tours in Amsterdam on July 15th.

Our captain, Capt. Albert, gave thorough explanations about the Amsterdam we saw in front of us — from the depth of the canal, to the house boats lining the canals, and the famous Amsterdam homes lining the canals, some narrow, some wider.

He shared the narrative in a light, good-natured way that we could understand. Having an open boat allowed us to travel under the lowest bridge, where we had to duck our heads a good amount lower than the dozens of other bridges.

Our tour group was also great. There was one family -Sean and Shawna and their three boys (5,3,1) celebrating a birthday, a couple from Switzerland, and some Americans, us plus another traveler.

We didn’t have a full boat, which made it comfortable and easy to move around. The snacks and drinks were plentiful and easily accessible, too.

I would highly recommend the Canal tour with Captain Jack to travelers visiting Amsterdam. It’s a really good way to see the city and figure out what places you’d like to visit on foot. I remember our captain also saying it is good to start your tour of the city with a boat, and move up.

Definitely an Amsterdam highlight

Excellent canal tour. Both Marco and Wisse were friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. The tour was an hour and covered a good bit of the canal system and included a wealth of information on all matters relating to Amsterdam history and to the many sites along the way. We had a great time. Tickets can be purchased on board (if seats are available) and will cost you Euro 19.95 pp.
