See an alternative side of Amsterdam on a 2-hour walking tour of the Dutch capital, ideal for travelers seeking an unconventional sightseeing experience. In a small group limited to nine, you’ll explore the Amsterdam Red Light District, wander beside the UNESCO-listed Canal Ring, and discuss cultural topics such as drugs, prostitution, and marriage equality.
What to Expect

Amsterdam is a city like no other. Famous for coffee shops, bicycles, and prostitution, the city is also renowned for its liberal laws, alternative housing arrangements, and being the first in the world to recognize marriage equality.

Delve into the alternative scene that makes Amsterdam a must-visit destination for people over the world. Explore the origins of these facets of Amsterdam society, such as the post-WWII housing crisis that began today’s current phenomenon of living in boats or in squats, and the counter-culture movements that developed into today’s unique atmosphere, including the city’s most famous coffee shop, and the street art hidden in the city center.

This is the real Amsterdam - the side of the city that locals love, and that visitors come to experience. This tour is a must for anyone wanting to really experience this unique city!

On this 2-hour tour cover:

  • Housing crisis and houseboats
  • Gentrification and urban development
  • Smart shops
  • Mid-1960s counterculture movement
  • Provo and the White Bicycle Plan
  • Drugs - history and laws
  • Amsterdam’s most famous coffee shop
  • Coalition Project 1012
  • Squats and street art
  • Marriage equality
  • Legal prostitution
  • ...and much more!

Sam’s Tour

Highly recommend doing this tour with Sam. He’s a true storyteller and does a great job keeping everyone interested. You can tell when someone is passionate about teaching people about the city and Sam shows that passion in his stories.
